Punk Look, Outside Billy Reid
Another great look from outside the Billy Reid show: part punk, with torn jeans and a skinny tie, part diva with hair piled high, heels and a black patent clutch.
Joanna Hillman, Outside Jason Wu
Street style darling Joanna Hillman of Harper’s Bazaar was back in action yesterday, sporting a cute and creative combination of denim shirt and pleated ivory silk skirt. (I loved her prep secrets for Fashion Week interview from last season – the dreaded rolling rack of outfits must be out again.) Her metallic YSL wedges, after the jump. (more…)
All White, Vivienne Tam Show
In a recent interview with various designers, WWD asked them: white after Labor Day, yes or no? Most said yes – with certain conditions attached. It has to look intentional, not haphazard. Here’s a crisp, chic look outside the Vivienne Tam show last September – especially great with neon accessories.
Leather Skirt, Vivienne Tam Show
Here’s another look from last September’s fashion week that’s still very relevant right now. The leather skirt should be a key piece for fall, especially this one by Joie. Love the necklace, too.
Backless Maxi Dress, Prince Street
Bill Cunningham managed to spot way more maxi dresses than short shorts this summer, particularly near his usual stomping grounds on 57th and Fifth, the opposite of what we saw downtown. It begs the question: do downtowners dress much differently than uptowners? Here’s a bohemian version of the maxi dress, backless and floral, downtown on Prince Street.
Purple Beaded Dress, Jazz Age Lawn Party
A vintage beaded dress looks great with ropes of pearls and a headband. The lipstick is spot on, too.
On the Grass, Jazz Age Lawn Party
On the Dance Floor, Jazz Age Lawn Party
Big band jazz by the Dreamland Orchestra might have been old fashioned, but it was certainly danceable. The vintage fashion came alive on the dance floor. More photos after the jump. (more…)
White Lace Flapper Dress, Jazz Age Lawn Party
While it’s true that Coco Chanel popularized the little black dress in 1926, it was more for evening than for a summer garden party. Kudos to everyone who figured out that white was the standard 1920s attire for a hot summer day – like this vintage lace flapper dress with a beaded hem. All white in the summertime is still a chic choice today.
1920s Hair and Makeup, Jazz Age Lawn Party
There were lots of great looks at this weekend’s Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island, but the best were ones that really took you back in time. Her hair and makeup – plus the fab vintage jewelry – looks like something out of a 1920s soda shop ad. If this were a melodrama from the era, she would be the beautiful hat check girl.
Navy and Black, Mott Street
Sleek minimalist looks like this navy top and black leggings look chic and understated for early fall.
Girls in Short Shorts, Martha’s Vineyard
Another reason short shorts trumped maxi skirts this summer is their appeal in places other than New York, where a billowing maxi skirt might seem a little too Stevie Nicks on Main Street. These girls wore short shorts to shop on Main Street, Edgartown.
Models in All Black, Mott Street
No matter what fall fashion brings – this year, it’s supposed to be jewel tones à la Gucci F/W 2011 – you can rest assured that models off duty will still wear black.
The sunglasses at top look a lot like a pair of black Burberry shades on my fall shopping list right now. Also love the Alexander Wang bag on the sidewalk.
Leopard Top and Cut-Offs, Prince Street
As tweeted, I am so tired of seeing everyone in NYC in shorts and t-shirts. The outfit can easily be upgraded with a nice top like this leopard blouse, a nice bag and sheer black flats, with all the comfort of shorts. See? Not so hard.
High-Waisted Skirt, Houston Street
Another popular sartorial choice this summer has been the high-waisted, flowy mini skirt, here in salmon pink on Houston Street. It looks particularly feminine paired with a ruffled blouse.
