We’re Getting the Band Back Together: Marc Jacobs FW2021

Gabriella Karefa-Johnson at Marc Jacobs FW2021

It was genuinely a joy to see many of the New York fashion gang together again. There was a time in the dark days of Covid when you wondered, will I ever see these people again? Will there ever be another fashion show where we come together for this shared experience? Fashion shows can feel like a Happening, when performers assemble in an ordinary place, do their thing and then disperse, as if they were never there at all. And yes, I am including the photographers, the models, the security guys, the PR people, the selfie seekers, the crashers and every single person who walks by and asks, “What’s going on here?” not just the guests. So it felt particularly empty when this whole cast of fashion show players dispersed in March of 2020, possibly for good.

Marc Jacobs made an impassioned case on Instagram for having live fashion shows with people in attendance and emphasized “the physicality of shared experience.” It turns out that we, the audience and the consumer, are actually part of his creative process, as if something is not really “finished” unless someone is there to see it.

We were there. It happened. Let’s hope it keeps happening, for him and many other designers.

TBT: Anna Wintour at Chloe, 2010

It’s hard to know if the rumors that Anna Wintour may be leaving Condé Nast are true, but the NY Post certainly seems to have doubled down on the story. (Another rumor is that the New York Times will publish her “exit interview” à la Cindi Lieve’s “How to Quit a Magazine.”) It seems a bit cherchez la femme to blame Wintour for massive shifts in the print industry, which are not limited to Condé Nast.

This is the only photo of her I have where she is truly unguarded, because she didn’t know she was being photographed. A beauty and a legendary force in the industry.

Virginia Smith at Haider Ackermann FW2015

Virginia Smith at Haider Ackermann FW2015Jeans are undergoing some major changes for 2015. Continuing from the boyfriend jeans trend of the previous year, they’re getting even wider and slouchier, like these sailor-style jeans seen on Vogue’s Virginia Smith at the Haider Ackermann show in Paris. A similar but separate trend: flared jeans like the ones Ghesquière put on the runway at Louis Vuitton.

Virginia Smith in Black and White

And…. we’re off! The first full day of New York Fashion Week always has that first day of school feel to it. It’s good to see some familiar faces, like the ever-chic Virginia Smith of Vogue, who attended this morning’s BCBG Max Azria show dressed in black and white. Loved the monochromatic palette as transitional wear into fall and the animal print pants.

Virginia Smith in Classic Workwear

Amid all the fantastical outfits of Paris fashion week, it’s the classic work attire that provides the most useful inspiration. Virginia Smith wore an off-white silk button down and tailored trousers to the Lanvin show. The accessories – python print clutch and polished brown leather boots – are what makes it fashion.

Alexander McQueen SS2011

This much-anticipated show was the first after Alexander McQueen’s tragic death last spring, with his friend and colleague Sarah Burton taking the reins. The show seemed to provoke a bittersweet reaction in some of the guests – you can see strains of the old McQueen in Burton’s designs, since she had been his collaborator for so long. The dark, Gothic sensibility is still there – particularly in this season’s ravishing Alexander McQueen boots designed by Burton – but the spring designs were deftly turned out by Burton’s lighter hand, giving McQueen fans hope for the future of the line.

Chloe SS2011

Chloe’s autumn/winter 2010 collection has already proved highly influential this fall with its wide-legged trousers and camel coats, so the spring/summer 2011 show was a must-see for many. The distinctive colors of Chloe’s fall line were on display on the guests in the Tuileries.

Alexander Wang

A huge amount of buzz surrounded Saturday’s show by Alexander Wang, the fashion darling who’s built a multimillion-dollar clothing and accessories empire by the age of 25. A crowd of key fashion players came to the show, though the collection itself was disappointing compared to Wang’s previous seasons. The fabulous clothes on all the guests, however, were inspiration enough.

Calvin Klein Show SS10

It was high-octane glamour outside the Calvin Klein show at their showroom off Seventh Avenue on Thursday. A celebrity contingent including Eva Mendes, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, Rose Byrne and Kerry Washington arrived to take in the show. And the rest of the attendees didn’t look too shabby, either.

Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!

We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”

Street Chic (and Red Carpet): 2009 CFDA Awards

Rachel Zoe in Louis Vuitton, 2009 CFDA AwardsWhen the fashion world brings a Hollywood date to an awards ceremony, the glamour quotient is extreme. This was black tie dressing at its best and most tricky, since the skies alternately threatened rain or just plain mugginess. But both the male and female guests pulled it off with aplomb, playing with hemlines (of both trousers and dresses) and reinterpreting what “black tie” means for 2009.

The “muse” theme of this year’s CFDA Awards (Council of Fashion Designers of America) encouraged designers to bring someone who inspires them as a date. You could almost imagine them designing clothes with a specific beautiful woman in mind.

It also meant that the women were accompanied by designers for this fashion event, not their husbands/significant others, who stayed at home. Everybody wins! (more…)
