Masked Men, Union Square Greenmarket, June 2020
I had to stop and photograph these guys because of the Old Bay mask – love it! Not surprisingly, they, like me, are originally from Maryland, where Old Bay goes with (almost) everything. The mask on the left looks like camo from far away, but it’s actually a dog print.
Overalls and Polka Dot Mask, Union Square, June 2020
Another great look from the Union Square Greenmarket. Love the mix of city and country.
Masculin Feminin, Union Square
Usually when people talk about the masculin-feminin look, they’re referencing le smoking, as seen on several guests at the 2011 CFDA Awards. But it can be dressed down too, as with this look of slouchy plaid trousers, a white buttondown with tuxedo ruffles, unisex afro and not a stitch of makeup. True personal style.
Porkpie Hat, 14th Street
Before we segue into the sometimes zany world of NY Fashion Week guys, here’s what downtown guys are wearing. The porkpie hat and double breasted coat conjure up the “Boardwalk Empire” era of 1920s toughs and the show’s star Michael Pitt, a huge style influencer right now.
Color in Winter
After seeing so much black and gray on the streets of New York, it’s a genuine pleasure to see a colorful outfit like this one. Next to her, he wears one of the knit animal hats that have become a huge trend this winter – probably because they’re easy to buy from street vendors when the mercury drops.
Pixie Haircut and Plaid Scarf, Union Square, January
Call it the Michelle Williams/Emma Watson effect, but pixie haircuts are looking particularly fresh right now. Sheared locks are such a nice harbinger of spring when cotton dresses are still a distant dream.
Russian Fur Hat and Military Jacket, Union Square, January
Eric Wilson of the Times Styles section included trapper hats as one of “10 Looks We Never Want to See Again” post-2010. (Also included: anything with studs or skulls.) Very well, but what happens if you have to spend hours outside in sub-freezing temperatures?
Trapper hats are infinitely practical, but you could put them away in favor of their Russian cousins, the huge fur topper, for similar warmth. Insulated faux fur will work just as well. Paired here with a navy blue military jacket, the look is sharp and timeless.
Downtown Couple, Union Square, January
The downtown/Brooklyn crowd has really embraced a retro preppy look of Bean-type snow boots, Pendleton jackets, and toggle coats for winter. Kudos not just for the style but for the practicality of this look – though I doubt Leon Leonwood Bean ever would have envisioned his rugged clothes as an urban must-have.
May Day, Union Square
On a recent brilliantly sunny, low-humidity day, it was like California in Union Square. This slightly cool spring afternoon called for creative layering. Think silk scarves and jackets over shorts, dresses and tees: it should always be easy to shed a few layers and take in the sun.
An animal-print silk scarf is a fast and easy way to embellish a standard outfit of jeans, tee, and shrunken leather jacket. Ballet flats with a black lace overlay pick up the pattern. (more…)
Street Chic: Union Square Greenmarket
It may seem like forever ago that it was warm and sunny, but spring will be sprung again – and when it does, what will you wear? Dresses are still a strong trend, though this year the focus is on the waist. Put away the empire-waisted baby doll styles and go for shirt dresses in bright colors or delicate florals.
Distressed denim in all forms is going strong, and it seems like you can roll up the cuffs on almost anything and call it the “boyfriend” look.
After the jump: look at what New Yorkers were wearing on a hot Saturday at the Union Square Greenmarket.
The rule for bright colors this spring? There are no rules. Go as bright as you want and mix them all up. Love her pixie haircut, too.
Winter in Union Square
Most New Yorkers seem to be more concerned with staying warm than looking fashionable these days, though some managed to do both. Bomber hats with earflaps are incredibly warm and in style; if you want one and can’t find any left in Manhattan, they’re available for $32 on L.L.Bean. Other trends: white sneakers with skinny black pants, mirrored aviator sunglasses, silver, 80’s jewel tone colors, and cold feet – flats and leggings leave a sliver of skin exposed.
