Bright Colors, Bushwick, April 2021
Bright colors are popping up not just on tulips but on people on the streets of NYC – a trend we also saw in some of the bright, monochromatic menswear looks at last night’s Oscars. It seems to signal unbridled optimism after a long, cold winter.
Gloomy Day in Paris, February 2020
Sorry, Emily in Paris, but this is what true French-girl style looks like. It may seem thrown together, but the styling is great – an oversized wool trench with the belt cinched just so, the carefully arranged cross body bag, and shiny thick-soled leather boots, perfect for walking through the city on a blustery day.
Caught in the Breeze: Kim Jones at Creatures of Comfort FW2018
Entrenched: Elizabeth von Guttman at Stella McCartney SS2018
Trench coats are back in full force in a a variety of fabrics, especially plaids. This doesn’t mean you have to tone down what goes underneath, however: Elizabeth von Guttman wore hers with bright red track pants.
Alex Badia at Diane von Furstenberg SS2016
WWD’s Alex Badia mixed it up with different variations on pinstripes including a pinstriped trench at the Diane von Furstenberg show.
Susie Bubble at Chanel Couture FW2014
Hanne Gaby Odiele at Dior FW2015
Model Hanne Gaby saddled up outside the Dior show yesterday in a red Comme des Garcons trench festooned with dozens of buckled belts. Her chauffeur was taking her right over to the Balenciaga show in style.
Virginia Smith at Bottega Veneta FW2015
“Il pleut il mouille c’est la fête à la grenouille”: Vogue’s Virginia Smith wore a fantastic trench from the Gap that was part of their collaboration with Parisian store Merci in 2009.
Expert Layering: Belted Trench Coat at Michael Kors FW2015
One thing the cold weather elicited in New York fashion week guests was a flair for layering. A guest at the Michael Kors show layered a turtleneck and plaid dress under a trench coat, but kept it from getting too conservative by cinching her coat with a leather belt and adding a nose ring and multiple earrings. Also: necklaces over turtlenecks are A Thing now. Celine bag.
Nasiba Adilova at Elie Saab Couture SS2015
We’re really seeing a lot of volume in the clothes outside the shows, especially the pants. It’s a complete 180 from the skinny rocker chick jeans that used to be a fashion staple at Paris fashion weeks. Nasiba Adilova wore a billowing gray silk overcoat and gray wide-legged trousers to the Elie Saab couture show.
Sunshine or Clouds: Anya Ziourova at Giambattista Valli SS2015
Anya Ziourova brought a clever clutch by the other prominent Anya in fashion – Anya Hindmarch – to the Giambattista Valli show in Paris. One side of the clutch has a cloud with rays of sun, the other a cloud with lightning bolt. Either way, Ziourova was prepared for the weather in a sharp white trench by J.W. Anderson.
Silk Scarves Are Back: Sasha Luss After Fendi
Normcore is one thing, but the return of the brightly colored silk scarf might provoke more dejà vu in some of us. This ’90s staple was seen loosely tied on many a fashionable neck at the Milan shows, which is nowhere near the Upper East Side BTW. After the Fendi show, model Sasha Luss paired hers with a trench and cuffed jeans.
Tina Leung at Balmain FW2014
A cool trench is a great way to brighten up a rainy day. Stylist Tina Leung of Tina Loves wore a colorful burgundy and blue wave print trench to the Balmain show in Paris.
Nasiba Adilova at Isabel Marant FW2014
Loved this elegant look in all white, including a white trench, on Nasiba Adilova at the Isabel Marant show in Paris.
Candela Novembre at Emporio Armani FW2014
Loved this spring look on Candela Novembre at the Emporio Armani show in Milan – especially her Fendi Iridia sandals. Detail shot of those after the jump. (more…)
