Bright Colors, Bushwick, April 2021
Bright colors are popping up not just on tulips but on people on the streets of NYC – a trend we also saw in some of the bright, monochromatic menswear looks at last night’s Oscars. It seems to signal unbridled optimism after a long, cold winter.
Gloomy Day in Paris, February 2020
Sorry, Emily in Paris, but this is what true French-girl style looks like. It may seem thrown together, but the styling is great – an oversized wool trench with the belt cinched just so, the carefully arranged cross body bag, and shiny thick-soled leather boots, perfect for walking through the city on a blustery day.
Black Velvet Coat, Outside Ann Demeulemeester FW2020
Trench Coat, Outside Michael Kors FW2020
April is definitely trench coat weather in NYC and environs. Here’s an excellent example of the form on a gloomy day outside the Michael Kors show. Leg of mutton sleeves like these have been going in and out of style since, oh, about the fifteenth century. They add a touch of whimsy and luxury to a wardrobe staple.
Caught in the Breeze: Kim Jones at Creatures of Comfort FW2018
Bedazzled, Outside Self-Portrait SS2018
Such a great look for fall that has everything going for it: a tiger-stripe trench, faded denim, green lurex sweater and those dazzling shades. Also note the styling with the sweater tucked into the jeans. Yes, this is happening now!
Entrenched: Elizabeth von Guttman at Stella McCartney SS2018
Trench coats are back in full force in a a variety of fabrics, especially plaids. This doesn’t mean you have to tone down what goes underneath, however: Elizabeth von Guttman wore hers with bright red track pants.
Transitional Look: Caroline Daur at Cushnie et Ochs FW2017
Caroline Daur mixed a white jumpsuit with an unstructured trench by Rochas for a look that transitioned from winter to spring.
Standing Out From the Crowd: Jan Quammie at Calvin Klein FW2017
A pop of orange on Jan Quammie in a leather trench stood out from the crowd this winter in NYC.
Margaret Zhang at Chloe FW2016
Denim with lots of volume is a welcome change after years of skinny jeans and shrunken jackets. Margaret Zhang wore an oversize denim trench coat and wide-legged jeans to the Chloe show in Paris.
Jada Pinkett Smith at Chloe SS2016
Jada Pinkett Smith wore a colorful yellow trench to the Chloe show, draping it over a white blouse with a long silk tie and slouchy black trousers that are all the rage now in Paris. My one critique of this outfit: too many accessories – the multiple bodyguards! Even Karlie Kloss evades her stalkers with just one, and there is a particular Chinese billionaire who often attends the shows with no security in sight. They are surely there somewhere, but much more subtle.
Samantha Angelo at Chloe SS2016
New blogger Samantha Angelo of The Eye Travels turned heads this fashion week season with her statuesque beauty and flair for mixing different pieces. Outside the Chloe show in Paris, she belted a long Dries Van Noten coat, part trench and part duster, over an Acne dress with a pointed collar and Mary Jane-style Charlotte Olympia shoes. The military subtext to the outfit may especially work for another reason: she actually served in the Marines as a clarinetist in the United States Marine Band! Certainly a multi-talented player on the fashion scene.
Susie Bubble at Chanel Couture FW2014
Caroline Vreeland at Mugler FW2015
If you can’t quite wrap your mind around spring yet, remember: the little black dress is seasonless. As seen on Caroline Vreeland at the Mugler show in Paris.
