Throwback Thursday: Amanda Murphy in the Paris Metro
One day during Paris fall/winter 2013 fashion week last February, some photographer friends and I got on the metro to go to the next show and saw the most beautiful girl just sitting there. She was obviously a model, but none of us had laid eyes upon her before. When we introduced ourselves, she said she had only been in one show so far: Prada, which had an exclusive arrangement with her to open and close that show.
That was Amanda Murphy, and in a mere seven months she has become one of the top 20 models in the world, appearing in Prada print ads and numerous runway shows this past fashion week. I don’t know if she still takes the metro anymore, but we’ll be looking for her.
Karlie Kloss at Donna Karan FW2011
More Throwback Thursdays: Sometimes I look back at old photos and realize I didn’t know what I had, like this photo of Karlie Kloss from Valentine’s Day in 2011. It was before she hit megastardom as a model, and though the bag is Dior, I love how she’s just in regular jeans and scuffed up boots.
Kate Lanphear at Marc by Marc Jacobs SS2010
Another street style meets throwback Thursdays photo for you: Kate Lanphear in September 2009 at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show. Would studs would have taken off the way they did were it not for Lanphear, then the accessories editor at Elle? She started wearing the Eddie Borgo bracelets, and then we started seeing studs on Louboutins like these. Then studs went totally mainstream, and even now they’re still on shoes and bags at Bloomingdale’s. In a 2010 interview, Lanphear professed to shopping at the small shops and vintage places on St. Mark’s Place. It all goes back to Trash & Vaudeville.
Victoria Beckham at Marc Jacobs SS 2008
Street style and Throwback Thursday: it could be a dangerous combination, right? But I have so many photos in the archives, and some of them are worth revisiting.
This is from the notorious Marc Jacobs show that ran two hours late and sent editors and journalists like Suzy Menkes into a tizzy. Victoria Beckham was the last to arrive. I didn’t even need to use a flash to take this photo – there were so many others going off around me. Beckham was still very much “Posh” at this point – I doubt she would wear a Herve Leger bandage dress now – her style has changed a lot.
