The Last Days of 10021
It may be the last days of a unified 10021, but the posh spirit of the Upper East Side should continue to run unchecked up Madison Avenue. During the nice weather, the well-heeled finally step out of their Town Cars and take a stroll.
Below, traveling up Madison Avenue, with stops at Roger Vivier and Tom Ford on the way.

The bad news: the new Roger Vivier store is just as tempting as it’s cracked up to be. The good news: the prices are the same as or less than Bergdorf’s shoe department. Somewhere, Manolo Blahnik should be worried. Very worried.

Tom Ford has only gotten better with age. Everything in his drop-dead sexy new boutique telegraphs the message, “You want to sleep with me.” He can even make the clichéd Japanese men’s silk dressing gown look desirable. Will Ferrell, eat your heart out.
Above, the fragrance Japan Noir. It’s no coincidence that the aesthetic here feels both modern yet familiar: Eastern influences plus traditional men’s clothing draws on the fad of Orientalism at the turn of the last century.

Williamsburg
Years after it became a destination for trend spotters and stylists in search of ideas, Williamsburg remains one of the most fashion-conscious places in New York. The specialty here is a quirky sort of jolie-laide style whose appeal is its resistance to the mainstream.
Williamsburg itself retains an element that has been lost to many Manhattan neighborhoods: a certain amount of mystery.

Yale vs. ?
Street Chic
You’ve already seen the fashion face off between Columbia and NYU. Now it’s time for Yale versus… versus… What’s that place called? You know, the school that’s just chock full of wildly creative, stylish, and interesting people? Oh, darn. The name escapes me now.
Fortunately for Gastro Chic, Yale students managed to keep their clothes on this past weekend – in public, at least.
Stores
The windows at J. Press.
Wishlist sells labels like Michael Stars, Rock & Republic, 7 for All Mankind, Lacoste, Le Tigre, Vix, and the insidiously named new brand “Rich & Skinny.” On display were several varieties of…stonewashed jeans. That’s right, stonewashed jeans just might be the leggings nightmare of this season. If you don’t remember what they look like/weren’t alive/cognizant in 1990, please see the jeans Demi Moore is wearing in this cast photo from Ghost:
That doesn’t mean it’s OK to track down Demi’s jeans on eBay. The newly acceptable stonewashed jeans are 7-esque, not mom jeans. Hey, it could be worse. It could have been Whoopi’s pants that came back in style.

A refrigerated case full of takeout treats like gorgonzola walnut ravioli, bolognese sauce, fresh gnocchi, and huge trays of lasagna kept company with all sorts of Italian knick knacks for adults and kids, like this pretty enamelware and these alphabet flashcards in Italian, below.

Though the space that housed Chapel Wines now houses Villarina’s, you can still find something to drink in this blue-law town. The Wine Thief just opened new digs on Crown Street behind the Omni hotel. They may not sell kegs, but the place does have a young, laid-back atmosphere: China Cat Sunflower was playing on the stereo when I walked in. The sleekly-designed space is filled with modern-day wino favorites like Cakebread and Ridge.

Fashion Week FS07: Vera Wang
The Vera Wang show is almost a
Fashion Week prerequisite because a) it wasn’t so long ago that she won CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, and b) she still has a hold on the whole couture bridal thing. If you live in NYC and have engaged friends with a yen for fabulous dresses, or you are one yourself, you are most likely already familar with Vera Wang. The last time I was at her shop, a bride was getting the final fittings on a $60K custom-made Vera Wang gown. Yes folks, that’s $60K for one dress the bride will wear once. Which translates to: Vera Wang will be around for the long haul.
Here’s who came to the show.
Sadly, darlings, this is it for me for Fashion Week FS07.
- As for the fashion future, I am shorting:
- leggings worn with high heels (never a good look to start with, even more horrible now)
- leggings with flats…?
- silver handbags, except for the most expensive and difficult to replicate (mainly because I fear a plague of street vendor imitations)
- all black
- leopard
- flats (though summer will have its way with us in that regard)Long on:
- pale gold bags (because they’re harder to imitate)
- silver shoes
- leggings with ankle boots
- hot pink
- weird colors
- bright white
- platform wedges
- drab
- shiny black textural things
But right now I am feeling especially long on bikinis and poolside lounge chairs, and I have a pressing appointment in Marathon Key. Until next time…
Fashion Week FS07: Catherine Malandrino
An arty downtown crowd showed up at the Catherine Malandrino show; Birkin bags were scarce.
Catherine Malandrino is truly the fashion person’s designer. Never afraid of the outré, she designs clothes that are safe to wear at even the most vicious industry party. All you need is daring, and she’ll supply the effortless chic.

Fashion Week FS07: Bill Blass
Who is the Bill Blass customer? It’s a question that has burdened the label in the past, but this season’s collection attracted a nice crowd. For fall ’07, a mix of socialites of all ages showed up, plus some familiar faces in the fashion pack.
There was something for everyone at the show. The Bill Blass stalwarts got their suits, which were swingy and modern, and the younger set got party dresses that were – are you sitting down? – drop dead sexy. Yes, that’s right: “Bill Blass” and “sexy,” in the same sentence.

Fashion Week FS07: Oscar de la Renta
The ultimate fashion power crowd descended upon the Oscar de la Renta show yesterday. There was fur, fur everywhere on this particularly frigid New York day, though none of it seemed to be flying, even in the middle of Fashion Week.
Oh yes: and lest you ever feel lazy for wearing the same thing two days in a row, even the editor of French Vogue has been spied sporting the same very fabulous coat twice. Now that’s confidence. And chic.
