Bridgehampton Polo, Part Two
Some of the most arresting looks at the match were those that flew in the face of traditional polo attire.

Guests struck a pose at the see-and-be-scene Mercedes-Benz polo challenge at JetOne Jets field, sponsored last Saturday by the St. Regis Residences.
Ack! More Fashion
We ran into a friend in Nantucket – let’s call him Ping Pong – who begged to be included in Gastro Chic. He pointed out that he was wearing espadrilles a friend had brought him back from Morocco. After much scoffing, we took several joke photos of him.
Turns out Ping Pong was right: Espadrilles do seem to be a burgeoning trend for men. They were also Max Snow’s footwear of choice in this photo from US Weekly.
Presumably Max can afford to buy anything he wants on his shopping jaunts with Mary-Kate, but he chose espadrilles. And here they are again in Nantucket:
Mary-Kate may also be an influence.
Counter to the preppy culture is a Rasta-ish hippie vibe that has been going strong now on the island for a while now. Bob Marley himself stayed in ‘Sconset while on tour in the 70’s.
But most folks are just plain preppy.

The coveted basket purse. OK, lady, not that coveted.
Bagel? Check. Cigarette? Check? I heart NY shirt? Check. New Yorkers on Nantucket? Check. Now if only there were a decent bagel shop in town.
Walking to the ferry.
Super Saturday, Hats Off to
Forget dogs and children: the must-have accessory in the Hamptons is the sun hat. How else to survive hour after grueling hour of outdoor social events?
Super Saturday, The Men of
Three cheers to the men who made it out to support this cause. They were rewarded with lots of goods from Steven Alan, Turnbull and Asser, Brooks Brothers and more.

Super Saturday, Prints vs. White Dresses at
Prints and white dresses battled it out for primacy on the fashion field.

Super Saturday, Best of
High heat, high humidity, and high fashion: Super Saturday, the annual Hamptons shopping event that benefits the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, has always been an oasis of style in the midst of summer doldrums.
Of all the hundreds of fashionably dressed people at the event (more photos to come), here are a few who stood out as truly chic.
Ack! Fashion
There’s been a lot of noise recently about the resurgence of preppy style. It’s even taken off in the hip hop world, in a trend that started with pink-wearing rapper Cam’ron.
Let’s take it back to where this whole deal started: ACK, y’all. On Nantucket it’s always been cool to dress in eye-achingly bright colors and outrageous prints. Is it any coincidence that preppiness is now the nexus of insane black and white style?
And no, it’s not “plaid,” Wall Street Journal. It’s madras, yo.
Le Marais
The Marais, on the Right Bank south of Bastille, is one of the hot neighborhoods for the younger set. With its narrow streets filled with boutiques and specialty food shops, it’s like the Lower East Side – but more expensive.
French people: They’re just like US! They wear leggings! They shop at American Apparel!

How to be French? It’s all in the attitude.

Motorbikes are everywhere in Paris, and cool helmets are the must-have accessory.
An environmental counter movement urges Parisians to ride bicycles instead.
Rue Saint-Honoré
That’s right, kiddies: We’re not in Manhattan anymore. Welcome to Paris.
The weather is unseasonably cold, but the French remain unruffled. On the Rue Saint-Honoré in the 1er arrondissement, the women wear trench coats with belts artfully tied. The mysterious French artful-tying gene, first noted with the advent of Hermes scarves, has yet to be pinpointed. In men this translates into an ability to toss a scarf over one’s shoulder just so. The look is very debonair, and as for the men of New York, well… let’s hope you’re watching.

The Upper West Side
The Upper West Side dresses more like the rest of the country than any other neighborhood in Manhattan.
I don’t know what else to say about that.
There was some fashion to be found, however, and most of it was a practical, comfortable spin on summer trends.

An iconic Upper West Side look, the zany lady
This style was immortalized by Ruth Gordon in Rosemary’s Baby and was still in evidence here until the late ’90s. But as the chain stores and young Rosemarys have moved in, the quirky, original look has disappeared. Where are the zany ladies of yesteryear?
East Village, Summer
We interrupt this broadcast for an East Village Rant: The area south of 14th Street, north of Houston, and east of Fifth Avenue is not “the Lower East Side.” It is the East Village.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I certainly didn’t find these fresh flowers on the Lower East Side.
If this is the Lower East Side, where are all the cabaret licenses?
We were here before the hipsters.
Bastards.
East Hampton
The jeans-and-Izod uniform of summers past has been replaced by bold prints and dresses. At times Newtown Lane looked more like the south of France than the Hamptons. It’s Calypso‘s easy breezy chic, gone mainstream.

Looking for street chic is a little like fishing: When you find a lucky spot in the pond, you come back to it. Madison and 58th is just such a place in Manhattan’s fashion pool.
