Street Chic: Downtown to Midtown, January
While it may be tempting to bury yourself in a plain black puffer jacket for the fifth day in a row, these fashionable folks prove that you can still look stylish in the cold. Layers are obviously key, but these women and men are paying a lot of attention to coats and accessories, seemingly dressing from the outside layer in. Start with a good coat or interesting bag you may have been neglecting this winter and try building the rest of your look around that.
A sculptural, mannishly-tailored coat is a cool Calvin Klein-esque look when paired with skinny black jeans and a gray sweatshirt. The alligator bag ensures that the whole look isn’t too casual. (more…)
Street Chic: Lafayette and Prince Street, January
When the mercury crept up over 32 yesterday, and New Yorkers emerged from their homes and offices fashionably dressed for the cold. If, like me, you tend to wear the same thing over and over again in cold weather, these looks may give you some inspiration.
December’s Street Chic focused on color, but all black will always be the uniform here. She pairs shiny black leggings with a studded down jacket and lace-up boots. Very on-trend yet very warm and practical. Slouchy knit berets are also a big favorite for women. (more…)
Fifth Avenue in December
Perhaps no other city outside of Germany gets as decked out as New York does for the holidays, which makes it a beautiful time of year to shop and look at the elaborate window displays – though unfortunately, the rest of the world seems to have figured that out too, because they’re all here. Monday was relatively quiet on Fifth Avenue outside of Bergdorf’s, with a few well-dressed shoppers mixing with the crowds stopped in their tracks by the ingenious displays.
One of the most exciting developments was color – and not just holiday colors, but all the colors of the rainbow. Scandanavian chic: Her skirt is from the Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony collection. (more…)
Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2009
Satin, sequins and girly glamour ruled at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – and not just on the runway. Celebs like Fergie, in a strapless red sheath, and Keri Hilson, in a backless number, brought sexy back to the red carpet in New York last night. On other well-dressed guests, short hemlines ruled, and embellishments like lace, feathers, and metallics added to the glam rock feel.
Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas makes an entrance. The first thing we saw of her was her very sparkly shoe. (more…)
West Chelsea Galleries
This past Saturday, the New Yorker held a “Passport to the Arts” event that brought hundreds of people out to art galleries across the city. Of course, you don’t need a New Yorker festival to check out the latest works of art. Excellent exhibits such as Edward Burtynsky’s photo series “Oil” at the Hasted Hund Kraeutler Gallery on West 24th Street are still on view now.
Something about taking gallery tours makes people want to dress cool. Saturday’s crowd didn’t disappoint. Her oversize blazer, draped scarf with metallic trim and black sunglasses are the ultimate in chic simplicity. (more…)
Lower Broadway
So long, bare legs and flip flops: the chill of late autumn settled in this week on lower Broadway in New York, where layers and coats were the order of the day. Most people opted for a palette of neutrals (so much easier to coordinate), though every once in a while a flash of fall colors walked by, as on this stylish woman, below.
Love the vintage feel of this rust-colored fall coat. Look for more pom pom and tassel hats like this as the weather gets colder. The azure blue of her shoes is such a nice contrast. (more…)
Central Park
On a beautiful fall Sunday when the rain finally cleared, New Yorkers emerged to stroll around Central Park. Knitwear, shades of yellow and orange, and more flat boots were some of the best seasonal looks.
An aristocratic look, accessorized with dog. (more…)
Street Chic: Soho
On a recent afternoon in Soho, it was warm enough to walk around in short sleeves – maybe for the last time in a long time. Sportswear is the direction fashion is going for the foreseeable future: Think layered tees, vests, and leggings. Major influencers for this trend: Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, and Stella McCartney’s collection for Adidas. Despite the towering platforms on view at Fashion Week, the sans-chauffeured-Escalade set took to the streets in oxfords, sneakers, and flat boots, many of them tough looking biker boots. And the favorite print right now is leopard, wherever possible.
Three women hailing a cab. One reason dancewear/sportswear is so popular now is that it can be sexy and comfortable at once. Neutral colors of black white and gray are the way to go. Love the black leather vest in the middle. (more…)
Street Chic: Oceana Benefit
The glamour quotient was high at Monday night’s party for Oceana, hosted by Alexander and Brenda von Schweickhardt at their beautiful Upper East Side apartment. Founded in 2001, Oceana is a nonprofit international advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans. Sam Waterston, Denise Rich, the Hilfigers, Mick Jones and many more came to show their support.
Two models dressed as mermaids set the scene, lounging on a window ledge off the apartment’s winding staircase. (more…)
Street Chic: New York Women’s Foundation Benefit
The invitation says cocktails and dinner, not black tie, but the setting is the glamorous 1920s bank now known as Gotham Hall, and Mary J. Blige is performing. Stepping Out & Stepping Up, a benefit hosted by the New York Women’s Foundation, showed that the sisters are doing it for themselves – not just by funding over 240 nonprofit organizations that benefit the lives of five million women and girls in New York City, but by redefining the once-strict rules for formal wear.
Most notable was what was going on below the belt – dresses are no longer a must, as women of all ages branch out into silk pants or even over-the-knee boots. And red made a splash, as on guests Ann Rapp and Jean Shafiroff, above. (more…)
Street Chic: Atlantic Antic Brooklyn
The annual Atlantic Antic festival on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn isn’t your average tube-socks-and-Italian-sausage street fair: Hundreds of local Brooklyn businesses set up shop, from clothing shops like Steven Alan to favorite neighborhood restaurants like Building on Bond. Oysters on the half shell, vintage dresses, pulled pork sandwiches, live music and Six Point Ale: it’s all here. Many came out in their Sunday best to check out the festivities.
Love the flower in her hair, green eyeshadow and beads. (more…)
Street Chic: Greenwich Village
It’s back-to-school time in the NYU neighborhood, where you can always get a lesson on style without a huge clothing allowance. Some of the easiest, cheapest nods to current fashion: a flash of red, oversized sweatshirts and sweatpants, Pendleton plaid, gray, and lace tights like these.
A nice masculine-feminine mix of a slouchy sweatshirt paired with lace tights. Add the hair and you’ve got a modern (unconscious?) interpretation of Flashdance. (more…)
Calvin Klein Show SS10
It was high-octane glamour outside the Calvin Klein show at their showroom off Seventh Avenue on Thursday. A celebrity contingent including Eva Mendes, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, Rose Byrne and Kerry Washington arrived to take in the show. And the rest of the attendees didn’t look too shabby, either.

3.1 Phillip Lim Show SS10 – Front Row
The fashion set broke out yet another round of fabulous outfits for day seven of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, where Phillip Lim showed in the tents. Set against a 007-esque mirrored backdrop, the collection featured sportswear in relaxed layers, gray with pops of red, and a trompe l’oeil pleated dress that was white walking in one direction, black walking back. The sequined party clothes were especially appealing.
A successful take on the ’80s look – very “Addicted to Love” meets Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. Expect to see more PVC/leather skirts like this through the winter – and yes, tube skirts are back. (more…)
