Street Chic: New York, Late July
It may be the dog days of summer, but street fashion marches on. As these New Yorkers demonstrate, when you’re wearing less during the summer, it’s the little details that count: rolled cuffs, bright lipstick, and eye-catching accessories.
Great individual style, mixing neutral grays with a pop of coral on the lips and turquoise-framed sunglasses. An artfully-draped sheer paisley scarf can fend off the AC inside. You can find bright, saturated lipstick shades from the new Tom Ford beauty line. (more…)
Street Chic: Madison Square
How do you stay cool and still look chic in hot weather? A few fashionable folks demonstrated how in Madison Square and environs on a 90-degree afternoon.
If you have silk pants or a silk jumper, now is the time – they feel light as air, even in extreme heat. These red, white and navy striped pants make a vivid statement on a hot day. (more…)
Heat Wave, East Village
How do you keep your cool in the East Village during a heat wave? Summer may call for gingham prints and khakis in the Hamptons, but that look just won’t fly in this neighborhood, formerly ground zero for New York’s punk movement. Savvy dressers managed to keep the edge without looking like an excerpt from Goths in Hot Weather.
Rule No. 1: Don’t cave into pastels. Graphic red, white and black keep this look sharp and citified. (more…)
Street Chic: Governor’s Island Polo
Despite 94-degree heat, New Yorkers dressed to impress at this Sunday’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic 2010 on Governor’s Island. Elaborate hats, some of them made by the wearer, dotted the sidelines at this match while Prince Harry faced off against Nacho Figueras. While sundresses are still a favorite for polo attire, short shorts and rompers made a bigger showing this year, a reversal from the maxi dresses at the Hamptons polo matches in previous seasons.
A daringly modern, minimalist look that stood out in the crowd. A black sunhat still roots the outfit in polo territory. (more…)
8th Street, 9am
It may be shorts and flip flops weather, but you can’t wear that to work every morning – or can you? We set out to see what everyone’s sporting to the office by staking out 8th Street near two subway stations from 8:30 – 9:30am. One thing’s clear: the rules are changing. Flip flops and shorts are getting dressier, and work dress codes are getting more flexible. But that’s not to say you can’t do it in style.
Cuffed shorts are de rigeur this summer. This military pair gets dressed up with wedges, a simple black tank top, and Chanel bag. (more…)
CFDA Awards Red Carpet and Full Fashion Analysis!
One great thing about a black tie event for the fashion industry? You’ll never be bored. Guests at the Swarovski-sponsored CFDA Awards last night wore daring, dazzling looks with no worries of playing it safe for the mass media, since this 7th Avenue version of the Oscars is a little more sheltered than the Hollywood event. That’s not to say the women and men here weren’t elegantly dressed: fabulous gowns and tuxes abounded, but look closely and you’ll see towering shoes, short hemlines and plunging necklines that really pushed the envelope in terms of what works for the red carpet.
Sarah Jessica Parker created the biggest stir of the night in a gorgeous, art nouveau-style Alexander McQueen gown. She presented a Board of Directors Special Tribute Award to the late designer at the ceremony.
The best red carpet looks: Alexa Chung, Emile de Ravin, Jessica Biel, Dree Hemingway, Irina Lazareanu, Sasha Pivovarova and many more – all photos by Gastro Chic! (more…)
May Day, Union Square
On a recent brilliantly sunny, low-humidity day, it was like California in Union Square. This slightly cool spring afternoon called for creative layering. Think silk scarves and jackets over shorts, dresses and tees: it should always be easy to shed a few layers and take in the sun.
An animal-print silk scarf is a fast and easy way to embellish a standard outfit of jeans, tee, and shrunken leather jacket. Ballet flats with a black lace overlay pick up the pattern. (more…)
Rainy Day Wear
It’s the kind of outfit you don’t want to think about but can’t really avoid: what to wear on a chilly, rainy spring day. Along with the proliferation of trenches, military field jackets get put to the test in rainy weather, when a large hood is the perfect defense against drizzle. More surprising this spring: the number of white jackets, jeans and even all-white outfits that made an appearance on a rainy day on Madison Avenue.
The emblematic New York rainy day look? A $4 black umbrella from one of the “umbrella umbrella” guys, mixed here with the cute schoolgirlish outfit of a striped scarf and I Love NY sweatshirt. The chambray color of her jeans is right on trend as well. (more…)
Lower Fifth Avenue, Spring
Classic American sportswear is going strong for spring, a more traditional look after the boho styles of past seasons. Lest you get too preppy, though, remember that New York minimalism almost always circles back to black.
Rolled trousers like these lighten up an all-black look in warm weather. (more…)
In the Trenches
Apparently a memo went around the office buildings surrounding Bryant Park on this beautiful spring day: wear a trench coat! Women and men opted for trenches in all colors, though khaki is the reigning neutral for spring so far.
A classic belted trench worn with peep-toe stilettos and black tights. (more…)
Chloe
One of the last shows of the season, Chloe took place in the Tuileries when it was just beginning to feel like spring. This year, “spring color” means something a little toned down than usual. White and ivory, neutral khaki and olive green, camel, animal-print silks, and the occasional bright pop of color make up the palette for the new season.
A model in an ivory jumpsuit dodges the shoe paparazzi. Wearable, chic jumpsuits were a key part of the Chloe fall/winter 2010 collection as well. (more…)
Chanel
It doesn’t get more see-and-be-seen than the Chanel show in Paris, held on a bitterly cold morning at the Grand Palais. Ladies who lunch mixed with fashion editors and put their best foot (and shoes, and coats, and hats, and jewels…) forward.
One of several gray chinchilla coats at the show. Also, many Chanel bags, suits, and shoes were instantly recognizable – such is the power of the brand. (more…)
Yves Saint Laurent
The YSL fall winter 2010 show took place right across from the retrospective honoring Yves Saint Laurent at the Petit Palais. The guests lived up to the late great designer’s vision of sophisticated eveningwear.
The almost mannish silhouette of this big shouldered fur goes well with the modern version of YSL’s le smoking – the black silk suit underneath.
Sonia Rykiel and John Galliano
Two shows converged at the industrial warehouse setting of Halle Freyssinet in eastern Paris. Sonia Rykiel’s show was followed immediately by John Galliano’s, and both drew many fashionably-dressed people out in the bitter cold.
A great bright yellow parka adds great color in winter. (Despite the fact that it was a March day, it was freezing.) Note the cropped trousers and oversized scarf. On him: black fur. It’s not just for women anymore. Excellent sunglasses on both of them. (more…)
Ann Demeulemeester
Ann Demeulemeester’s modern goth aesthetic is often described as edgy and avant garde; the same description could also be applied to her fans. On the runway, the long, lean, black silhouettes of her fall 2010 collection were broken up by flashes of red patent leather detailing. Outside in the courtyard of the Couvent des Cordeliers, black, minimalist clothing was favored by many of the guests, too.
She has this androgynous petit gamin look that’s just fascinating. A good example of how the guests can really bring a designer’s vision to life at a fashion show.
