Ulyana Sergeenko at Christian Dior
Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko arrived at yesterday’s Christian Dior show in a sweeping black tulle gown. A dramatic entrance indeed! I also loved the vintage needlepoint clutch she carried. If you have a grandmother who liked to needlepoint, you may have one of these in your own fashion archives. Detail shot, after the jump. (more…)
Anna Dello Russo at Balmain
Anna Dello Russo posed for dozens of photographers in a window display of gilded mirrors outside the Balmain show yesterday. Love how the studded black and gold dress (Versace SS 2012?) goes with the backdrop!
Fishing Lure Dress, Outside Ann Demeulemeester
One word: j’adore! A subversively cute Giles Deacon fishing lure print dress outside Ann Demeulemeester, worn with Rick Owens boots and black sunglasses. Just the right mix of tough and twee.
Anna Wintour at Carven
Since Guillaume Henry took the reins as head designer at Carven last spring, this storied brand has gone through quite a renaissance. Top fashion editors including Anna Wintour attended the show yesterday in the Tuileries.
Wintour arrived gorgeously attired in a dress that combines modern textiles and technique with a flared ’50s skirt – look out for more of these come spring – and a jeweled choker. But most importantly, Wintour demonstrates how fashion can convey power. Even without the bodyguard at right, it would be easy to tell from the expert cut, luxury and colorful flamboyance of her clothes that she is the queen bee.
Sui He in Blue, Outside the Rochas Show
There’s no shortage of fabulously dressed models off duty at Paris Fashion Week. One to watch is Sui He, seen here yesterday outside the Rochas show in a vivid blue dress, black Yves Saint Laurent bag and black wedge suede booties.
Leopard Top and Blue Celine Bag, Outside 3.1 Phillip Lim
The fashion set is definitely cliquey when it comes to favoring certain brands. Last spring, a number of editors wore Prada’s stripes to the Paris shows. This fall, Céline handbags have been on the arms of many. For color trends, look for lots of this vivid blue – we’ll call it Bill Cunningham blue – a surprising and refreshing color for fall. And of course the rest of her outfit is equally brilliant – from the sheer leopard top to the two-tone sunglasses to the studded bracelets and black and gold nail polish.
Kate Lanphear at Prabal Gurung
Notice that Elle Style Director Kate Lanphear is wearing the same thing to the Prabal Gurung show that she wore in this previous photo? It was no accident: Lanphear wore variations of the same all-black outfit every day of NY Fashion Week. For someone who’s one of the most photographed fashion editors around, it was a really interesting statement about personal style. Lanphear’s signature Goth fashionista look may have spurred a lot of trends, but her style is timeless.
Red and Pink Colorblocking, Outside Prabal Gurung
Colorblocking this season is all about breaking the rules. Pink and red don’t go together? Fuggedaboutit. This redhead pulls it off with panache outside the Prabal Gurung show, getting out of an equally colorful NYC yellow cab. And the pants are fabulously outrageous bell bottoms.
Lauren Santo Domingo at Prabal Gurung
Here’s another Voguette (and Moda Operandi founder) with great personal style: Lauren Santo Domingo. Love how she combines the pink blazer with pinkish beige silk pants for a cool tone-on-tone mix. Also note the boxy shape of the blazer, the new mannish-girl look for fall 2011.
Green Floral Maxi Dress, Outside Rag & Bone
For the whole summer, many of us have had one go-to print: stripes. Well now I’m sick of them (at least until Resort 2012). Dark florals are a nice way to usher in the fall, as with the green floral pattern on this belted maxi dress, seen outside the Rag & Bone show.
Modified Lumberjack Look, Outside Rag & Bone
I have an officemate who’s out to singlehandedly destroy the popularity of the lumberjack look in Williamsburg by introducing new trends – rave, retro ’80s, anything but Taavo Somer woodsman style. But lumberjack, like leopard, can still acceptable in moderation. This guy at the Rag & Bone show balanced the beard and plaid shirt with crisp cuffed jeans, Ray Bans, and a nice cognac leather bag and boots for a look that’s more urban than back woods. Williamsburg, are you listening?
Sarah Rutson at Jason Wu
Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson looked gorgeous at Jason Wu in a strapless pleated black dress. But since she is one of fashion’s bellwethers, it’s important to note what she’s wearing: a dress! Sarah Rutson was one of the first to wear all sorts of skinny pants and jeans with platform stilettos in past seasons. This past NY fashion week, however, she wore dresses and skirts almost every day.
Harlem's Fashion Row
On Friday, four designers presented collections at Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, as part of Harlem’s Fashion Row Spring 2012 show. Above, a fringed rope dress by Ingram Talley’s Jakia Handy. (more…)
