Fuchsia Queen: Carice van Houten at Schiaparelli FW2015
Carice van Houten a.k.a. the Game of Thrones‘ “Red Queen” looked so positively vibrant in fuchsia at last year’s Schiaparelli show that I didn’t recognize her until now. Just goes to show you want a jolt of summer color can do.
Spot On: Candela at Schiaparelli FW2015
Polka dots are the quintessential summer print, and they’re especially pretty in a long silk dress, as seen on Candela at the Schiaparelli show in Paris.
Chinoiserie: Catherine Baba at Schiaparelli FW2015
One trend we noticed at the Governors Ball – several stylish attendees were wearing chinoiserie-style robes as outerwear. Stylist Catherine Baba of Paris has been doing this for years, often pairing hers with a sun hat.
Miroslava Duma at Schiaparelli FW2016
It’s rainy it’s snowing it’s sunny – what to wear? Take a cue from Miroslava Duma, who paired cropped jeans with a white coat and black beret for a great transitional look at the Schiaparelli couture show.
Lorena Vergani at Schiaparelli FW2015
I guess it’s the prep in me, but I’m always a sucker for bright colored pants in the summer, like these bright pink ones seen on Lorena Vergani at the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris.
Simone Marchetti at Schiaparelli FW2014
Emmanuelle Alt at Schiaparelli FW2014
This was our first sign that something had happened to the mighty stiletto: when French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt arrived at the first show of Paris Couture last summer in low, red cap-toe heels. A statement shoe indeed!
Lili Sumner at Schiaparelli FW2014
Carine Roitfeld at Schiaparelli FW2014
The weather this week reminds me of the weather during last summer’s couture week in Paris, when it was relentlessly rainy and gloomy – in the middle of July! This didn’t trouble the fashion set too much, however – one solution, as Carine demonstrated, was to wear your usual summer dress but pair it with great boots or a jacket.

’70s Vibe: Magda Laguinge at Schiaparelli SS2015
Model Magda Laguinge headed out from the Schiaparelli show in a fur coat and bell bottom jeans. This wasn’t the only time during couture that we saw her in a ’70s look – cute and boho.
Sarah Ann Murray at Schiaparelli Couture SS2015
Sarah Ann Murray of The Rake magazine layered a plaid cape over a plaid jacket at the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris, to great visual effect. And also practical warmth, as mentioned in today’s New York Times Thursday Styles, where my photo of Irene Kim in layered coats illustrates the point!
Another cool detail we saw several times on Paris couture week attendees: decorative leather buckles at the neck of jackets and capes.
Veronika Heilbrunner at Schiaparelli FW2014
Veronika Heilbrunner of German Harper’s Bazaar really knows how to work the athletic look. During couture week in Paris, she mixed a sexy black tank top with a ribbed orange skirt and cork Nike hightops. Detail shot of those sneakers, after the jump. (more…)
Anna Wintour at Schiaparelli
I was initially against the idea of the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” seeing it as a kind of slacktivism. But apparently many of those who take the challenge, in which you have to throw a bucket of ice water over your head or give $100 to benefit A.L.S. research, end up donating either way. Over $13M has been donated to ALS research since this fad started. Never one to ignore a trend, Anna Wintour has just taken the challenge and captured it on video. See the video here – or see her in her normal dignified work state, as at the Paris couture shows, above.
