Christian Dior SS2011

Apologies in advance for the number of photos from this show – 32 – but there was so much great fashion outside Dior! First we had many of the key players for Paris Fashion Week dressed to the nines, then a promenade of models leaving the show – several of them in black leather leggings, the garb of choice for models this fall. If you’ve got legs….

Carine Roitfeld with Mario Sorrenti. I love how she mixes this leopard coat with purple lace-up shoes – unexpected and fun. (more…)

Marc Jacobs SS2011

One of the biggest adrenaline rushes of New York Fashion Week is the Marc Jacobs show, even now that it’s mostly celebrity-free. This may be due to the fact that the designer is now mercilessly punctual after receiving complaints about show delays several seasons ago, starting the show at exactly 8pm no matter who hasn’t made it inside yet. The result can be a mad dash for the door in evening clothes.

Prescient in her attire: Marc Jacobs showed ’70s looks for spring in retro colors and long, louche silhouettes like this one. Start wrapping your mind around brown for spring now, because it’s been in several collections. (more…)

Elise Overland SS 2011

Norwegian-born designer Elise Ă˜verland is known for body-con leather designs that look great on the models that attended her show this Sunday. But some of the best new designs on the runway were tiered silk dresses and blouses and long, flowy pants – a great new silhouette for spring that would look good even on non-models.

Violinist Hanh Bin, who performed on the runway, warmed up before the show in PVC leggings and platform heels. (more…)

Prabal Gurung SS2011

Prabal Gurung has been named one to watch by many influential fashion editors, and his show for spring, full of bright, color blocked looks and high tech materials, lived up to his promise. A number of high-power fans, buyers and stylists came to the show.

Lynn Yaeger in a billowy, boho skirt. Loved her recent article on how she deliberates so much over each purchase that at one point, salespeople burst into applause when she finally bought something. (more…)

Ann Demeulemeester

Ann Demeulemeester’s modern goth aesthetic is often described as edgy and avant garde; the same description could also be applied to her fans. On the runway, the long, lean, black silhouettes of her fall 2010 collection were broken up by flashes of red patent leather detailing. Outside in the courtyard of the Couvent des Cordeliers, black, minimalist clothing was favored by many of the guests, too.

Le Petite Gamine, Ann Demeulemeester Show

She has this androgynous petit gamin look that’s just fascinating. A good example of how the guests can really bring a designer’s vision to life at a fashion show.

Viktor & Rolf

Viktor & Rolf took over the tent at the Tuileries and attracted mobs of onlookers on this Saturday in Paris. Editors and buyers mixed with French fashion bloggers and paparazzi. The vast, wide open space and very windy day made the dry grounds of the Tuileries feel like something out of Lawrence of Arabia – with more fashion.

Malandrino

Though her latest designs aren’t even on shelves yet, there was an interesting interplay between Catherine Malandrino‘s Fall Winter 2010 collection and what the fashionable guests wore to the presentation last week. Leopard, fur and leather were just as present on the models as they were outside the show.

Alexander Wang

A huge amount of buzz surrounded Saturday’s show by Alexander Wang, the fashion darling who’s built a multimillion-dollar clothing and accessories empire by the age of 25. A crowd of key fashion players came to the show, though the collection itself was disappointing compared to Wang’s previous seasons. The fabulous clothes on all the guests, however, were inspiration enough.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Show SS10

Though Marc by Marc Jacobs is an American brand, the clothes have this quirky chic that seems quintessentially Parisian – even more so now that Marc lives in Paris. Lynn Yaeger stood outside with one of her reporter colleagues, marveling at all the clothes going by. The show attracts a creative crowd that really sees fashion as a form of self-expression – including Yaeger herself.

Lynn Yaeger at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Show

Definitely one of Yaeger’s most fabulous outfits ever. Her sense of style is timeless – for instance, she’s been wearing oxfords, one of the big trends of the season, for years now, and the intarsia doggie detail on the corner of her sweater evoked the lions in the “Doctor Doolittle” theme of Anna Sui’s show – the show that would take place the day after this photo was taken. Marc Jacobs Show SS10

Marc Jacobs may have scaled down the number of celebrities at his shows, but the Marc Jacobs show is always the real “Fashion’s Night Out.” Everyone in the industry puts on their most glamorous evening wear for a fab night on the town, starting with the show and ending with Lady Gaga’s performance at the after party.

Studded Mask: Lady Gaga and Lorenzo Martone Arrive, Marc Jacobs Show

Lady Gaga wore a reliably kooky get-up to the MJ show: flat black hat tied on at a rakish angle, Marc Jacobs dress, white blazer, and a studded mask. (Bunny ears are to Madonna as studded mask is to Lady Gaga?) Unlike many newly-minted pop stars, however, she has always been obsessed with fashion: Check out this WWD article on her as an indie rocker with style, before she hit the music stratosphere.

Her date is Marc Jacobs’ partner Lorenzo Matone, who also looked quite dashing.

See what the fashion set wore, after the jump…. (more…)

Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!

We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”

They both have great taste in blazers.

Tons of celebs and fashion faves – Michelle Tractenberg, Peaches Geldof, Carine Roitfeld and more after the jump. (more…)

Jason Wu Show SS10

What happens when you dress the First Lady? Your show is likely to be a veritable who’s who of the fashion world, as at Jason Wu’s show yesterday, where top editors, buyers, and socialites braved the rainy weather to catch the latest line by the up-and-coming designer.

Fashion Week SS09: Oscar de la Renta

A designer who dresses everyone from first ladies to megawatt stars, Oscar de la Renta draws a who’s-who list from fashion, New York society, and Hollywood to his shows on Park Avenue. The expensive suit that landed Cindy McCain in so much hot water with the press was Oscar de la Renta.

Anna Wintour in a beautiful white coat. Underneath she cinched her silk dress with a leather belt.
Funky glasses.
Here’s what black lipstick looks like off the runway–rather odd. If you took off the headscarf, this might be a good look. The gray dress on her friend is quite chic.
Conservative chic.
Black and white with a purple handbag.
Lee Radziwill in a white suit.
Sarah Rutson in slouchy harem pants and lots of necklaces.
Jamee Gregory proves that conservative does not have to equal boring. Love the Roger Vivier shoes.
Linda Wells looking very young and sophisticated in a LBD.
Winter florals in purple.
Meredith Melling Burke in a gorgeous black floral dress.
Virginia Smith, also of Vogue, accessorizing with an Obama pin on her handbag.
Rachel Zoe and sidekick. She actually looked really good in real life–perfectly put together. Now if only we didn’t know what was going on in that head of hers.
Fashion has changed with the climate–there were many more white cotton dresses in September. Call it winter white right now.
Nina Garcia obviously knows how to pick out a dress, but sometimes we think she needs a stylist. Looking at this photo, don’t you want to put her hair up? Unless you emphasize a long neck, puffy sleeves can create the football player effect.
There was a rumor about Jennifer Lopez that she uses Creme de la Mer as body moisturizer. Seen up close, her skin gives some credence that rumor–gorgeous!

Fashion Week SS09: Tracy Reese

In transitional months like May and September, when you don’t know what to wear, a good bet is black and white. That seemed to be the thinking this weekend as dozens of show goers dressed in absolutes. One of the biggest developments was winter white, right now–though they’re usually packed away after Labor Day, white dresses were making an appearance in September.

A study in contrasts–the white says spring/summer while the black tights signal winter.
A bow blouse and flouncy skirt.
She is always a presence at Fashion Week and is never one to shy away from outrageous hats. Before the show, she had to describe to a friend on her cell phone what she was wearing (“hot pink, red, and green!”) because the friend couldn’t identify her in the crowd. Hilarious.
Winter white right now.
A gorgeous statement necklace.
Admiring Kate Lanphear’s blouse. From far away, it looked like winter florals, but it was actually an abstract polka dot pattern–in black and white. Also note that while she rocked the gladiator sandals last Fashion Week, Lanphear has put them away in favor of tough-looking open-toe booties. And of course platforms are par for the course.
This outfit, also captured by the Sartorialist, is not just insanely stylish but also quite comfortable-looking on Sarah Rutson, fashion director of Hong Kong’s Lane Crawford. Yes, even the bondage-insprired animal-print stilettos, which are second nature to a fashionista.
Tough chic.
Claiborne Swanson and Virginia Smith of Vogue. Swanson is wearing the boyfriend blazer that will be everywhere next spring; Smith wins for shoes, which also caught Bill Cunningham‘s eye.
Gorgeous green and white wide-legged pants.Celebrating the outrageous.

Love her black-and-white bow-neck blouse.

Robert Burke, fashion consultant extraordinaire, in his usual dapper blazer.
Katrina Szish in the most dramatic bow blouse of the day.

Curly hair was one of the biggest beauty trends this fashion week. Put away your straight irons!

It wouldn’t be Fashion Week without this guy. He selects the fabric for his suits himself and commissions them, and for the past year or so he’s had cute sidekicks. Today’s fabric of choice? Black and white.

THE SHOW

Andre Leon Talley was seated front row at the Tracy Reese show, which started with a number of playing-it-safe muted solids before developing into her usual festive prints–phew. If even Tracy Reese had gone the conservative route, this would have been a sad Fashion Week indeed. This season Reese’s colorful patterns became more abstract, perhaps the product of new high-tech printing processes.

A winner of a trench coat in raw silk. This Asian-inspired open-cut tulip skirt was a continuing motif in the collection.

An abstract print.
The jury’s still out on harem pants for spring, but when you see looks like these, it gives you more confidence in the trend. This outfit is both chic and infinitely wearable.

An elegant open tulip cut cocktail dress in a mustardy chartreuse for spring.

Fashion Week FS08: Milly and Michael Kors

Hoardes of fashionable people converged upon the Bryant Park Tents for the Milly and Michael Kors shows.

André Leon Talley, leaving the Michael Kors show. Of course he can pull off a flowing fur scarf.
Beth Ostrosky with big purple bag.
Melania and the Donald leaving Michael Kors.
Blue tights and accessories.
Sweaters and blazers – seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs and already working its way into wear.
An interesting color combination of mustard and electric blue. And don’t forget the cute pompom hat.
Very Hedi Slimane.
Long on cardigans for men. Expect to see more and more of them.
A nice mix of textures – silk dress plus suede jacket plus leather belt and rocking boots.
A variety of neutrals adds up to a polished, sophisticated look.
The Michael Kors aesthetic.
This guy is always very dapper – and very tan.
Love this mix of the cherry red lips with the moss green shawl. And check out the seals on her coat. Very boarding school.
Jamee Gregory et al leaving Michael Kors.
Electric blue shoes and a high-waisted coat. She is wearing nude pantyhose, but because they are so, so sheer, they actually look good.
Purple sunglasses.
Combining a black-and-white Milly dress with a brown cardigan and black belt.
Kate Lanphear, Senior Fashion Editor at Elle, sticks to her black-on-black guns as the rest of the fashion world goes color. Why mess with your signature look?
A beautiful pattern.
Hint of spring. Floral dresses like this one will be everywhere.
Another floral dress, paired with a sweater to winterize it.
Hey bitches! It’s William Sledd of Ask a Gay Man! Love him! Spotted here with man bag.<
br />Neiman Marcus’ Ken Downing has been wearing impeccable suits all week.
