Runway Review: Isabel Toledo x Lane Bryant

ISABEL TOLEDO SS14 EXCLUSIVE FOR LANE BRYANT NEW YORK 3/20/14

It happened: a top American designer has taken on the task of designing a plus-size line. Isabel Toledo, who has clothed Michelle Obama, showed a capsule collection for Lane Bryant last Thursday night in New York. Despite my initial fears that it might all be colorful caftans, there was a lot on the runway to appeal to a diverse spectrum of women.

For the plus-size models on the runway, there was no hiding in an all-black formless sack. Instead Toledo’s collection was a celebration of vivid patterns (designed by her husband Ruben Toledo), cinched waistlines, curvy shapes and even a strapless wedding-like dress. The Lane Bryant buyer got a taste of young trends that – guess what! – don’t only look good on thin people, like lace, peplums, shirred edges, ombre, and layers of architecturally rendered chiffon, a beautifully cut coat, a fun party dress. Parsons BFA Fashion Show 2011

Many of the looks at Monday’s fashion show of graduating Parsons BFA students were so polished that it prompted designer host Reed Krakoff to say: “I feel like I should go back to school.” There were certainly a lot of references in the students’ work – at times we wanted to shout out “Prada!” “Celine!” “Jil Sander!” at different outfits coming down the runway – but what was interesting is how the work diverged from the big design houses.

The idea that hemlines have to be either short, long or knee length was cast aside in favor of skirts, tunics, shorts and pants that were multilayered, often in sheer fabric. There was plenty of draping for draping’s sake – extra swags added just for ornamentation. Influences spanned the globe from Africa to Afghanistan. All in all the show was a breath of fresh air in the New York fashion world. And who knows which one of these kids will be the Marc Jacobs of tomorrow? Some highlights from the show, after the jump.

Ports 1961

Ports 1961 has gained more and more attention since the brand started showing in the Bryant Park tents at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week a few years ago. Designer Tia Cibani’s ethereal but practical designs attracted top editors and trendsetters to Thursday’s show.
