Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman at Gucci 2016
Consider it pre-fall: Rachel Zoe wore black culottes and a black and white fur scarf to the Gucci show in New York. Her husband Rodger Berman looked perfectly preppily turned out in a navy blazer and dark wash jeans.
Calvin Klein SS2011
The Calvin Klein show makes for great people watching, but West 39th Street outside the studio gets really, really crowded. A narrow corridor forms with celebrities coming in on one side and boxes being wheeled out the service entrance on the other. At least it’s a reminder that it still takes a lot of elbow grease to run this show.
When the fashion shows move around town (and around the world), a flock of exotic birds follows them: the elaborately-attired invitees who land among regular civilians, then take off until the next season. (more…)
Marc Jacobs SS2011
One of the biggest adrenaline rushes of New York Fashion Week is the Marc Jacobs show, even now that it’s mostly celebrity-free. This may be due to the fact that the designer is now mercilessly punctual after receiving complaints about show delays several seasons ago, starting the show at exactly 8pm no matter who hasn’t made it inside yet. The result can be a mad dash for the door in evening clothes.
Prescient in her attire: Marc Jacobs showed ’70s looks for spring in retro colors and long, louche silhouettes like this one. Start wrapping your mind around brown for spring now, because it’s been in several collections. (more…)
Diane von Furstenberg SS 2011
The weather turned distinctly autumnal on the Sunday of New York Fashion Week, as rain came down on Lincoln Center Plaza before the Diane von Furstenberg show. Umbrellas and trench coats were put to good use.
Kate Lanphear. I know you’ve seen this outfit in the previous post, but I liked this portrait of her. While most of us just “dare to be different” some of the time, she has a distinct sense of style rooted in Goth otherness – this one combines a vintage rocker tee with a sleeveless trench. It reaffirms the importance of experimentation in fashion, instead of just following what everyone else is doing. (more…)
Prabal Gurung SS2011
Prabal Gurung has been named one to watch by many influential fashion editors, and his show for spring, full of bright, color blocked looks and high tech materials, lived up to his promise. A number of high-power fans, buyers and stylists came to the show.
Lynn Yaeger in a billowy, boho skirt. Loved her recent article on how she deliberates so much over each purchase that at one point, salespeople burst into applause when she finally bought something. (more…)
CFDA Awards Red Carpet and Full Fashion Analysis!
One great thing about a black tie event for the fashion industry? You’ll never be bored. Guests at the Swarovski-sponsored CFDA Awards last night wore daring, dazzling looks with no worries of playing it safe for the mass media, since this 7th Avenue version of the Oscars is a little more sheltered than the Hollywood event. That’s not to say the women and men here weren’t elegantly dressed: fabulous gowns and tuxes abounded, but look closely and you’ll see towering shoes, short hemlines and plunging necklines that really pushed the envelope in terms of what works for the red carpet.
Sarah Jessica Parker created the biggest stir of the night in a gorgeous, art nouveau-style Alexander McQueen gown. She presented a Board of Directors Special Tribute Award to the late designer at the ceremony.
The best red carpet looks: Alexa Chung, Emile de Ravin, Jessica Biel, Dree Hemingway, Irina Lazareanu, Sasha Pivovarova and many more – all photos by Gastro Chic! (more…)
Michael Kors
Michael Kors‘ popular appeal comes from more than just Project Runway: His clothes are both luxurious and wearable. Attendees at last week’s show included the usual set of editors and buyers plus deep-pocketed customers and the stylists who represent them.
Elle’s Kate Lanphear in a chic drop-waist, double-breasted gray coat, black sunglasses and an onyx ring. This is what’s so great about her style: it’s very personal. When everyone else is doing a cinched waist coat, she does a dropped-waist coat. (more…)
Rodarte
It’s called Rodar-TAY, darling. A select few braved the frosty atmosphere for the Rodarte show and arrived wearing some lovely, warm clothes for the occasion.
Sometimes, all it takes is a coat in just the right color, like the peachy nude of this overcoat, paired here with a fur hat and beige scarf. (more…)
Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!
We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”
They both have great taste in blazers.
Tons of celebs and fashion faves – Michelle Tractenberg, Peaches Geldof, Carine Roitfeld and more after the jump. (more…)
Fashion Week SS09: Oscar de la Renta
A designer who dresses everyone from first ladies to megawatt stars, Oscar de la Renta draws a who’s-who list from fashion, New York society, and Hollywood to his shows on Park Avenue. The expensive suit that landed Cindy McCain in so much hot water with the press was Oscar de la Renta.
Funky glasses.
Here’s what black lipstick looks like off the runway–rather odd. If you took off the headscarf, this might be a good look. The gray dress on her friend is quite chic.
Conservative chic.
Black and white with a purple handbag.
Lee Radziwill in a white suit.
Sarah Rutson in slouchy harem pants and lots of necklaces.
Jamee Gregory proves that conservative does not have to equal boring. Love the Roger Vivier shoes.
Linda Wells looking very young and sophisticated in a LBD.
Winter florals in purple.
Meredith Melling Burke in a gorgeous black floral dress.
Virginia Smith, also of Vogue, accessorizing with an Obama pin on her handbag.
Rachel Zoe and sidekick. She actually looked really good in real life–perfectly put together. Now if only we didn’t know what was going on in that head of hers.
Fashion has changed with the climate–there were many more white cotton dresses in September. Call it winter white right now.
Nina Garcia obviously knows how to pick out a dress, but sometimes we think she needs a stylist. Looking at this photo, don’t you want to put her hair up? Unless you emphasize a long neck, puffy sleeves can create the football player effect.
There was a rumor about Jennifer Lopez that she uses Creme de la Mer as body moisturizer. Seen up close, her skin gives some credence that rumor–gorgeous!
Fashion Week FS08: Marc Jacobs
Finally, the last installment of fashion week: the Marc Jacobs show. Sorry for the delay!
As always, there was excellent people watching to be had at the MJ show. These photos were hard to whittle down.
Hamish Bowles, always ahead of the curve, mixed plaids a week before everyone saw the same trend at the D&G show.
Ellen Pompeo looked gorgeous in the deshabille MJ look for spring.
Richie Rich in black nail polish and rhinestone-encrusted owl thingy.
Luxe velvety layering in a Bloomsbury look.
Rachel Zoe is shocked to learn that the show started without her. Funny, they waited for Anna Wintour.
This girl (Interview Mag? Not sure.) is always On Trend. Black funky glasses, shiny tights, and leopard shoes.
It takes panache to pull off mauve. Somehow this looks really good, especially paired with pea green.
Lynn Yaeger: but of course Bloomsbury is in!
Anna Wintour and her equally elusive husband J. Shelby Bryan.
This dress has a machine gun print! Love.
Neon florals plus biker jacket. A good bet for spring in New York.
Bill Cunningham was beside himself when he spotted these two girls with silk flowers in their hair. Turns out they work for Marc Jacobs.
I had no idea that Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko was a fan of Sonic Youth. Kidding, people. Still, I like that this hairdo has staying power.
Nice biker jacket and beautiful hair.
MIA. I’m not sure I like what she’s wearing, but here’s her picture anyway.
Another flowy dress that hit below the knee – a trend for fall. Nicely mixed with the fur scarf and belt.
They say dark red lips are in for spring, but doesn’t candy apple red feel spring-ier? Also note her clutch and the diamond band on middle finger, seen several times during fashion week. Her friend rocks the chunky cocktail ring, still going strong.
Fashion Week FS07: Oscar de la Renta
The ultimate fashion power crowd descended upon the Oscar de la Renta show yesterday. There was fur, fur everywhere on this particularly frigid New York day, though none of it seemed to be flying, even in the middle of Fashion Week.
Oh yes: and lest you ever feel lazy for wearing the same thing two days in a row, even the editor of French Vogue has been spied sporting the same very fabulous coat twice. Now that’s confidence. And chic.
