Colorblocking in the Rain, Outside Carven
Bright colors livened up a gray and rainy day outside the Carven show in Paris. Close up of her bag and banana holder – yes, that’s a banana holder – after the jump.
Kate Dimmock at Creatures of the Wind
Kate Dimmock of People Style Watch wore a great red and blue print dress to the Creatures of the Wind show yesterday. The up-and-coming designers have attracted the attention of many major fashion editors.
Summer Look, Outside J. Mendel
Love the infusion of color that hits menswear when the weather gets warmer. Here a guest at New York fashion week mixes a sharp blue gingham blazer with green jeans.
Preppy Look, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic
Going away for the 4th of July? Depending on your destination, it may be time to brush up on your preppy fashion. At the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, this fellow photographer nailed it with a baby blue blazer, striped oxford, striped belt and loafers. The white jeans are a newer take on the preppy look, but in places like the Hamptons, they work.

Preppy Fashion, Outside Ralph Lauren
Preppy fashion is always at home at a Ralph Lauren show. It’s risky to belt a navy puffer vest, worn over a black and white print sweater and yet another layer underneath, yet somehow the whole look comes together beautifully.
Layered Look, Outside Ralph Lauren
January fashion – or lack thereof – has had me craving a look at some of last winter’s NY Fashion Week outfits. Many of these, like this preppy layered menswear look with a trapper hat, are still pretty inspiring.
Red and White Dress, Martha’s Vineyard
Sure, Martha’s Vineyard is known for some of the over-the-top preppy fashion going on there, but not all preppy fashion statements are regrettable. This graphic print red and white dress makes a splash in downtown Edgartown.
Kids’ Fashion, Madison Avenue
It’s amazing how some things never go out of style in preppy kids fashion, namely polo shirts, docksiders and Stan Smiths – the same thing kids were wearing when I was growing up. Two great summer looks for boys on Madison Avenue.
In the Crowd, 2011 CFDA Awards
Anytime there was a dull moment on the CFDA Awards red carpet (which was rarely), we turned around to scan the crowd of non celeb guests. Often they were just as well dressed, like this guy in an expertly styled preppy look. The bow tie, windowpane plaid shirt and khaki blazer with pocket square are perfect for a formal-ish summer event.
Eric Javits Hats, Central Park Conservancy
Love this look in vivid greens and blues on this pair at the Central Park Conservancy Luncheon. The straw hats are both Eric Javits.
Downtown Couple, Union Square, January
The downtown/Brooklyn crowd has really embraced a retro preppy look of Bean-type snow boots, Pendleton jackets, and toggle coats for winter. Kudos not just for the style but for the practicality of this look – though I doubt Leon Leonwood Bean ever would have envisioned his rugged clothes as an urban must-have.
Nautica Men’s SS2011: The Guests
For men in particular, a lot of sportswear seems to be aspirational. You can dream of that Slim Aarons way of life without stepping foot in many of the locales if you just dress the part. So the job of selling that dream to the public comes down to these editors, buyers and taste makers that attended the show.
Patrick McDonald may not seem like the prototypical coverboy for Nautica, but he has always had a flair for taking traditional menswear and giving it a spin that’s distinctly his own – here with a conservative three-piece suit mixed with purple suede shoes and an oversize gray fedora. (more…)
Street Chic: Governor’s Island Polo
Despite 94-degree heat, New Yorkers dressed to impress at this Sunday’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic 2010 on Governor’s Island. Elaborate hats, some of them made by the wearer, dotted the sidelines at this match while Prince Harry faced off against Nacho Figueras. While sundresses are still a favorite for polo attire, short shorts and rompers made a bigger showing this year, a reversal from the maxi dresses at the Hamptons polo matches in previous seasons.
A daringly modern, minimalist look that stood out in the crowd. A black sunhat still roots the outfit in polo territory. (more…)
Martha’s Vineyard: What to Wear
Even if you arrived on the island of Martha’s Vineyard stark naked, you could acquire all the necessary clothes in no time—the shopping here is that perfectly tailored to the experience. Many of our favorite stores there are not online yet, but the clothing and shoe brands are. Here are four looks to get you through the weekend.
