Signs of Spring: Martha Hunt at Jason Wu FW2021
A great look on Martha Hunt at the Jason Wu show with some trends we expect to continue. Like everything else in the theoretical post-pandemic world, don’t expect clothes to get back to “normal” right away. We may eventually put away our sweatpants and opt for slightly more tailoring, but things will likely stay long and loose, like these pants on model Martha Hunt or the skirts Wu showed on the runway. Freedom of movement is key.
Print Pantsuit, Outside Dries Van Noten FW2020
A look from Paris, February 2020. I am long on loud prints and colors for spring. Getting dressed to leave the house has taken on a sort of performative aspect since no one is dressing to go to the office anymore – so why follow the rules? Wear whatever you like, the wilder, the better.
Ti Amo, Milano
Fourteen days and what seems like a lifetime ago, Milan Fashion Week was the most enjoyable fashion week I attended this year. The weather was beautiful – sunny and 60 degrees – the clothes were cheerful pops of color, almost everyone was in a good mood, and the living was easy. It wasn’t until the last day that coronavirus started to affect the city. Milan, we are wishing you a return to la dolce vita very soon.
One important fashion takeaway from Milan fashion week: saturated color. This is one of the things Italy has always done best. Again we are seeing monochromatic dressing here, but revved up for spring. Think of it as superhero outfits, separates in the same bright color from head to toe, often a pantsuit. Interestingly, we did not see a lot of prints except as an accent, which is certainly a change from the wild mishmash of Prada and Gucci prints quite recently. And the pastels of yesteryear look washed out by comparison. (more…)
Pantsuit Nation
One notable fashion takeaway from last night’s Golden Globes was the number of stars wearing feminized versions of the tuxedo: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Awkwafina, Kathy Bates, Kate McKinnon, Portia Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres, to name a few. Unlike years past, when women at the awards shows wore certain shades (white, black) to signify their alignment with suffragettes or the #metoo movement, this trend seemed to arise organically. It was as if they were saying: we’re not here to swan about in a froufrou gown, we’re here to get sh*t done.
Here are a few pantsuits – tuxedo and otherwise – we saw this past fashion month as well. It’s a boss-lady look we saw on quite a few power players in the fashion industry.

Not surprisingly, we saw a lot of pantsuits at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon, where Hillary Clinton spoke, but Padma Lakshmi’s was red hot. (more…)
Yellow Alert: Sofie Valkiers at Elie Saab FW2018
Nothing like a flash of yellow on a chilly spring day to get you in the mood for warmer weather – as seen on Sofie Valkiers at Elie Saab.
Asia Burris at the Met Museum Young Members Night 2017
Loved this striped jumpsuit on Asia Burris of Saint Heron at the Met Museum Young Members party. With its bunting-like pleats and folds, it would be great for a 4th of July party too.
Wearing the Pants: Olympia Scarry at the Whitney Museum Gala 2017
Pantsuits and jumpers have been a popular sartorial choice for women during the spring benefit season this year. Artist Olympia Scarry wore a military-inspired set with a flash of pink.
Over the Shoulder: Chriselle Lim at Akris SS2017
A good example of how eveningwear is blending with daywear, with classic shapes like the pantsuit now made of shimmery materials, as seen on Chriselle Lim at the Akris show.
Reporting for Duty: Yoyo Cao at Loewe SS2017
Yoyo Cao arrived at the Loewe show in a cadet cap and Prince of Wales plaid pants suit. Surprisingly popular among fashion week guests, pant suits have shed their dowdy image and now feature updated, flattering cuts and colors that would work both in and out of the office.
Black Ruffle Pant Suit, Outside Chanel Couture
This black pant suit with a dramatic, oversize black ruffle was one of the more stunning looks during haute couture week in Paris.
Helena Bordon at Chanel Couture
At the Chanel couture show in Paris, Brazilian Helena Bordon wore a pantsuit with exquisite ruffled sleeves by Sao Paulo designer Reinaldo Lourenço. And what looks like an oversize cologne bottle is actually an ingenious clutch by Charlotte Olympia, a favorite designer among the fashion set.
Ada Kokosar at Giorgio Armani
Here’s something to get you in the mood for spring: Ada Kokosar in great combination of brown and robin’s egg blue outside the Giorgio Armani show in Milan.
Viviana Volpicella in a Panda Print Suit
Mega prints like this adorable panda one on Viviana Volpicella made a big impression in Milan. Again, time to rethink the pantsuit. They’re cool!
Anna Dello Russo in Prada at Viktor & Rolf
There are designers, there are fashion shows and then there are the designers that fashion editors actually wear, and in that regard Prada has been a favorite for years now. Anna Dello Russo wore the bright orange pantsuit Prada runway look from the Fall 2012 collection to the Viktor & Rolf show in Paris. One look at this outfit tells you that pantsuits have definitely shed their dowdy image for fall 2012, reemerging as vibrant and fashion-forward.
