Monochrome Shift: Summer to Fall
During another unusually hot summer, women dressed in white from head to toe. Lightweight, all-white clothing was the only way to beat the heat when the city felt like a kiln.
Then, in the NYC version of crows appearing at the onset of fall, all-black outfits started popping up in mid to late August. And another summer comes to an end.
WFH Fit: Gilda Ambrosio at Alberta Ferretti FW2020
Quarantine chic! Thinking of our Italian friends as restrictions are slowly lifted there. This look on Gilda Ambrosio works no matter what the circumstances.
NYFW Trend Takeaway: Fashion Is Freedom
Though there are fewer hard and fast rules in fashion these days, every NY fashion week highlights some change in the way people are dressing now. Here are some trends we noticed not just on influencers, but on editors, buyers and generally chic people on the street during last week’s shows. (more…)
Polka Dot Socks, Soho 2018
Black and White Stripes, Dumbo 2018
Back after a long absence. I have been photographing in the streets of NYC these past few months, but have been particularly unnerved by the abuse of users’ personal information by Facebook – and by affiliation Instagram – so I haven’t been posting much. It’s quite a conundrum for photographers, since many of us have become dependent on these platforms to publicize our work.
At any rate, here’s a cute look from the streets of Dumbo in December, which I don’t think will be of any use to foreign agents or political consultants. This was for a print trade publication Footwear Plus that goes out to shoe designers everywhere. This month’s street style story was on the boots New Yorkers are wearing.
Utility Wear: Kelela at Dries Van Noten SS2019
Practicality and comfort seem to be the order of the day in women’s clothing now. Singer-songwriter Kelela wore loose fitting silver pants and top, a utility belt bag and Margiela boots to the Dries Van Noten show.
Parisian Chic: Lou Doillon After Chloe SS2019
So exciting to see singer-songwriter Lou Doillon outside a couple of the Paris shows since I am such a fan. (Definitely catch her in concert if you ever have the chance.) The ultimate Parisian girl, always so effortlessly chic.
Parachuting In: Caroline Daur at Viktor & Rolf FW2018
One of several pairs of parachute pants spotted on women at the shows this July, this time on Caroline Daur at Viktor & Rolf.
Pajama Dressing: Hailey Gates at Prada Resort 2019
Pajama dressing, the luxe and louche trend of a couple of years ago, does not seem to be going away anytime soon. Fashion influencers like Hailey Gates and Virginia Smith wore silk pajamas to the Prada resort show, and Louis Vuitton has just announced a collaboration with Grace Coddington – including the cat’s pajamas.
Spring Layers, Noho, April 2018
A cute look on Lafayette Street on a particularly warm day. Especially love the accessories: navy bucket bag, ballet flats round sunglasses – and of course, a wonderfully shaggy dog.
Valli Girl: Olivia Palermo at Giambattista Valli FW2018
Rainbow Brite: Linda Fargo at Art Basel Miami 2017
Linda Fargo arrived at Art Basel Miami fashionably clad as usual. She doubled down on the rainbow trend with a striped top and colorful earrings topped off the YSL heart-shaped sunglasses that have been so popular this year. The white loafers are also a nice touch.
Over the Rainbow: Lexie Kaplan at Art Basel Miami
Rainbow stripes are brightening up this winter, both in Miami Beach and in NYC. Artist Lexie Kaplan of the Kaplan twins wore a glittery rainbow look by Ashish to the DuJour party in Miami.
Selfie Time: Chase Carter and Kate Bock at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Event, Miami 2017
Two great outfits on two gorgeous models, Chase Carter and Kate Bock, at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit event in Miami Beach. We’re seeing a lot of wide legged pants and crop tops both in boutiques and on the guests here at Art Basel Miami. It’s a nice retro look that has timeless resort-wear appeal.
Seeing Double: Erica Pelosini and J.J. Martin at Marni SS2018
Erica Pelosini and J.J. Martin wore matching prints from J.J.’s fashion line La Double J to the Marni show. The looks are part of a welcome trend to replicate vintage prints with modern materials, so there’s no more sweating away in thick polyester just so you can wear something cool and retro. For La Double J., Martin goes through troves of prints in an Italian archive, then licenses and reproduces them in Italy with eye-catching results.
