Monika Chiang FW 2012
There are new designers, and then there are new designers whose clothes are loved by models – and God bless you if you fall into the latter camp. Monika Chiang’s clothes are already a wardrobe staple for several Hollywood celebs – her first stores opened out in L.A. Now they’re a favorite of models like Elettra Wiedemann, who wore several of Chiang’s designs during a recent Refinery 29 photo shoot and at yesterday’s presentation in her official role as muse for the fall collection.
The fall collection was notable for its shoes, which ranged from flats to wildly studded high tops to death-defying stilettos made with a gilded metal spike. Jackets and vests made of fur, suede, wool felt and leather – or often a combination of two – were particularly luscious yet practical for city living. (more…)
Opening Ceremony x Glamour Kitty Sweater, Outside BCBG
Welcome to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, aka New York Fashion Week! This adorable but chic kitty sweater was the centerpiece of one of my favorite outfits of Day One. It’s actually a collaboration between Glamour Magazine and Opening Ceremony, to be sold at Opening Ceremony on February 15th. Here it’s expertly mixed with a flowy white shirt dress, trench and bright red bag. As a cat person, I have been obsessed with it ever since OC previewed the design.
Mixed Prints, Outside Preen
These Prada stripes really have legs: Nautical stripes are already popping up in stores for yet another season. Bright graphic patterns like this mix on Leaf Greener of Elle China are a great way to usher in the spring. (And you can still stay warm in the process.)
Michelle Harper at Theyskens' Theory
I’ve been looking through some old photos before next week’s NY Fashion Week and came across this one of Michelle Harper (with Tommy Ton in the background). Love how her look is a cross between super modern and old Hollywood glamour.
Winter Layers, Outside Donna Karan
This model off duty wore a layered look of skirt, sweater, coat and matching bag exiting the Donna Karan show. Just leaving a coat unbuttoned can make an outfit more interesting on milder winter days.
Mary Alice Stephenson
Mary Alice Stephenson changed up a basic black coat with a leopard print jacket and geometric disc necklace. Lace up boots are sexy enough for fashion week, but sturdy enough for snow.
Totto Ramen
In a city full of ramen restaurants, Totto Ramen has become an essential stop on the NYC ramen tour. Opened just a couple of years ago by by the owner of Yakitori Totto, this Tokyo-style lunch spot on far West 52nd draws a crowd into the narrow space, where the din of the open kitchen spills over into a room full of diners hunched over bowls of steaming noodles. It’s a little crowded, it’s a little chaotic, and that’s just as it should be.
Noodles are what gave ramen soups their name, but for me the key element is the broth. The milky pork broth of Ippudo’s tonkotsu ramen was a revelation when it landed in New York on Fourth Avenue. The broth, with its super umami taste and velvety mouth feel, remains one of the big draws at this perennially popular restaurant. (more…)
Kasia Struss in a Tweed Coat
As tempting as it may be to envelop yourself in a sleeping bag-like coat every day this winter, cloth versions like Kasia Struss’ are a better choice whenever the weather permits. Here she leaves the Donna Karan show in a tweed coat with a rose in hand.
Brown Suit and Orange Tie, Madison Avenue
Here’s another great menswear look in honor of the men’s shows going on right now in Milan. Just as ladylike attire made a huge comeback this fall for women, bespoke suits and tailoring are essential looks in menswear now.
Photographer in a Southwestern Print, Outside Donna Karan
One of fashion week’s most stylish photographers mixes a red Southwestern print jacket with a black puffer coat, tweed scarf and studded biker boots, and it all works beautifully together.
Layered Look, Outside Ralph Lauren
January fashion – or lack thereof – has had me craving a look at some of last winter’s NY Fashion Week outfits. Many of these, like this preppy layered menswear look with a trapper hat, are still pretty inspiring.
Lunch: Little Muenster
CLOSED
There’s something timelessly appealing about a grilled cheese sandwich eaten on a dreary winter’s day, especially when you’re eating it in a warm dining room with a view of the cold street.
You could go to your local diner for grilled cheese, but unadulterated American comfort food is so comforting, it could put New Yorkers to sleep. Why not improve on the original while keeping the spirit the same? That’s what new grilled cheese shop Little Muenster sets out to do on the Lower East Side.
