The First Eighteen: Parsons MFA Exhibit

Parsons feted its first graduating class of fashion MFA students with an exhibit and party on Monday. The new program, which was partially funded by Parsons alum Donna Karan, has produced some incredibly talented new designers whose clothing wouldn’t be out of place hanging next to much more established brands. Particularly interesting was a willingness to experiment with cutting edge technology in fabric design and technique. Here are a few highlights from the show.  (more…)

Zanna Roberts Rassi at the Parsons MFA Exhibit

Marie Claire editor Zanna Roberts Rassi arrived at Monday’s Parsons MFA exhibit looking just as chic as she does during fashion week. We’ve been seeing bright pants on a lot of trendsetters now, but what makes her look particularly cool is how she pairs these Christopher Kane for J Brand neon-bright yellow jeans with a classic military drab jacket. She’s customized the jeans by tucking the flared leg into her lace-up boots. Love it.

Girl With an Insect Pin, En Route to the Met Ball

An oversize insect pin conjured up the surrealist designs of Elsa Schiaparelli on this guest en route to the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala. A white silk dress and gray fur provide the perfect neutral but elegant backdrop.

The NoMad

Not only is the NoMad a shiny new restaurant in a shiny new hotel, it’s the reason Danny Meyer sold Eleven Madison Park, to avoid the competition from another high-end place up the street. And the buyer of Eleven Madison Park, Daniel Humm, who just won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef, is now in the kitchen at the NoMad. The buzz about this place has been huge, and the stakes are high.  (more…)

One-Shoulder Gown, Outside the Mark Hotel

Not everyone who was beautifully dressed for the Met Ball was a movie star. I loved this one-shoulder gown with a vivid, gold flecked print outside the Mark Hotel – so glamorous and feminine.

Lunch: Banh Mi Saigon

Crunchy, soft, spicy, sweet, vinegary, meaty, vegetal: If  banh mi is made just right, it’s possible to get all these elements in one bite. The beauty of this Vietnamese sandwich is in the combination of disparate, contrasting ingredients that come together in one delicious whole. But get one part of it wrong, and you’re liable to throw the whole thing off.

Arizona Muse at Barneys

A crazy thing happened on the way to Barneys yesterday – Arizona Muse walked by! Here she is looking gorgeous without a stitch of makeup. The super cool faux python bag with bright red piping is Stella McCartney, and her trench with patent leather sleeves is Burberry.

Jourdan Dunn in Burberry Prorsum

Lace was everywhere on the runways for spring 2012. Supermodel Jourdan Dunn followed suit at last night’s Met Museum Costume Institute gala, wearing a strapless off-white lace gown by Burberry Prorsum.

January Jones in Atelier Versace

January Jones, seen here exiting the Mark Hotel for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, looked stunning in a yellow Atelier Versace gown with a structured bodice and peplum. The necklace is Cartier.

Met Gala: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Burberry

Model and Transformers star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley left the Mark Hotel last night en route to the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute gala. The face of Burberry Body, she naturally wore Burberry – a long, beaded bronze and black striped gown with long sleeves. It was such an elegant look, made more so by the classic updo and Irene Neuwirth earrings. And the man on her arm who’s photographing the crowd of photographers? That’s Mario Testino.

Lani Kai

CLOSED

It’s almost that time of year again – time for rum drinks, coconut-scented suntan lotion, the cool sting of salt water and the sleepy heat of the beach. But until you’re actually lying on a stretch of sand as pretty as Lani Kai in Hawaii, there’s a bar and restaurant by the same name right here in NYC where the drinks are garnished with flowers, the bartender’s wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and the potted palms and pink blooms could be in the lobby of a tropical hotel far, far away.  (more…)

Mercadito Grove: Taco Tuesdays

Sidewalk Seating, Mercadito Grove

There are better Mexican places in New York than Mercadito Grove. But for inexpensive, crowd-pleasing Mexican grub, you don’t need to look any further. Even better, right now they have a “Taco Tuesdays” special: two tacos for $5. It seemed like a good way to prepare for Cinco de Mayo, so we headed over last week to investigate.  (more…)

Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter

Remember when dinner and a drink in the East Village would set you back less than $20? Despite the number of more expensive places opening up in the neighborhood, one new restaurant has nostalgic appeal not just in the comfort food but in the price: Southern-themed Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter on Avenue C.  (more…)

Alison Eighteen

CLOSED

Grilled Octopus with Fregola, Alison Eighteen

Just mentioning that you remember Alison on Dominick marks you as a Diner of a Certain Age. (I am one of them.) In the restaurant’s heyday on Dominick Street in the ’90s, Tribeca had more homeless people than millionaires, and taking a cab down there for dinner was an exotic, perhaps life-threatening adventure. Fast forward to now, when restaurants can only appear mysterious by not listing a phone number, papering over their windows to discourage the B-list or serving dinner in the dark(more…)

Minca

Exterior 2, Minca

Everyone has a favorite ramen place, but the one that comes up over and over again among downtown denizens is Minca. This tiny East Village spot has less than 20 seats, but on most nights they’re full of people slurping down noodles.  (more…)
