Floral Frock, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

A floral frock looks so elegant for a daytime summer party. At the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, this guest paired hers with the traditional wide-brimmed hat and nude peep-toe shoes. Why are nude shoes the trend that never ends? Because they make your legs look never-ending.

Polo Street Chic: House Photographer in All White

Here’s another Gatsby-esque look for you: the house photographer of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in a white dress and brown oxfords. Also love the boater hat as a substitute for the ubiquitous straw fedora. Expect 1920s chic to reign this summer as we near the release of The Great Gatsby.

Swedish Midsummer Festival in Battery Park

Every year the Swedish Embassy takes over a slice of Battery Park for a huge midsummer festival complete with a maypole, Swedish folk band, dancing, Swedish meatballs, pickled herring, and aquavit. Even if you aren’t remotely Swedish, it’s worth heading down here on the Friday of the solstice to toast to the longest day of the year.  (more…)

Street Chic: Black and White Polka Dot Dress, Astor Place

This look is just the right combination of feminine and edgy for a summer day in the East Village. More and more women are wearing boots instead of sandals with dresses and skirts. Not only is it fashionable, it’s a good way to deal with potential bad weather.

Rosemary’s

In any other town – even in other parts of New York City – it would be a sad tale of recession-era urban blight: a decades-old family business burns down, leaving a blackened shell of a building that sits empty for years.

But not here. When Village Paper burned down over a year ago and the owners relocated to 8th Street, several restauranteurs started vying for the burned out shell of a building on a prime West Village corner, only to be rejected by Community Board 2. You’d think the community would be thrilled to be rid of a burned out shell of a building, but no.  (more…)

Hamish Bowles in a Swarovski Crystal Bow Tie, 2012 CFDA Awards

As usual, Hamish Bowles takes the award for best in men’s fashion. At the 2012 CFDA Awards, sponsored by Swarovski, he wore a Swarovski crystal bow tie with his tux. The magenta socks are the icing on the cake.

White Maxi Skirt, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

I liked the bohemian look of this flared white cotton maxi skirt with a slim black tank top at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. She’s paired it with red ballet flats and a headband made of faux cherries. I’ve been seeing several whimsical headbands like this around lately. They’re often made by the wearer.

Jessica Paré in Jason Wu, 2012 CFDA Awards

I am completely obsessed with Mad Men actress Jessica Paré. She had me at “Zou Bisou Bisou.” And she looked just as amazing in person when she walked the red carpet at this week’s CFDA Awards in this beaded black and fuchsia Jason Wu dress. Cute but edgy, much like her character on the show. The tassel earrings are by Eddie Borgo, another CFDA nominee.

Colicchio & Sons Tap Room

Despite the number of restaurants that have opened in the Meatpacking District in recent years, it’s still hard to find a good place to go before or after an event in West Chelsea or Chelsea Piers. So many of the new places feel big boxy or inordinately expensive, and the old places can get a little old hat.  (more…)

Garance Doré and Scott Schuman, 2012 CFDA Awards

One of the issues many people have with black tie dressing: they get all dolled up in a style that doesn’t look anything like the way they normally dress. So it was refreshing to see Garance Doré and Scott Schuman looking like their normal selves to receive the CFDA media award, only even more fabulous. Garance wore a green Derek Lam dress, a nice, cheerful flash of color on the red carpet, and Scott a Dior tux. Congrats for the award, and especially for keeping it clean when so many other bloggers blur the line between editorial and advertising.

White Dress and Fedora, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

An ivory silk dress and fedora channels the Great Gatsby at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. And about that fedora: D. and I have an ongoing argument about whether they are out of style. But the answer seems to be that they will never go out of style. They have been adopted into the canon of American fashion as surely as the polo shirt.

Pink Bow Tie and White Chinos, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Loved this cooly elegant look on a male guest at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. It’s preppy, yes, but also modern, with two-tone boating shoes and sleek sunglasses. Like many at the polo match, he accessorized with a Veuve Clicquot picnic blanket in their signature saffron yellow.

Erin Wasson in Antonio Azzuolo, 2012 CFDA Awards

While there weren’t as many menswear looks on women as at last year’s CFDA Awards, model Erin Wasson went black tie with a black and white suit by CFDA-nominated designer Antonio Azzuolo.

Jessica Stam in Jason Wu, 2012 CFDA Awards

Lace was a big motif in the spring collections and also on the CFDA red carpet. Designer Jason Wu’s sheer blue silk crepe gown with a black lace underlay looked super sexy and glamorous on model Jessica Stam.

Selita Ebanks in a White Dress, 2012 CFDA Awards

There are now three photos of stylish women in white dresses on the home page. See a pattern emerging? Model Selita Ebanks did the black tie version with this Herve Leger dress, a combination of his signature bondage dress and flowing gown with silver sequin detailing.
