Black and White Stripes, Madison Avenue

Mixing a Chanel-esque black and white striped jacket with black leather shorts creates a great hi-lo effect for summer weekdays. The YSL tote was a New York Fashion Week giveaway. I also became obsessed with her sunglasses and hunted them down online. Looks like they are Super Sunglasses in “Lucia,” available here.

Reynard

Reynard is the latest farm-to-table-in-a-chichi-setting restaurant to hit the city, this time by Marlow & Sons chef Sean Rembold and his partner Andrew Tarlow. The new spot in the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg got some flak for being too slick and sceney, but the vibe here feels positively organic compared to the hyper-branded, focus-grouped type of restaurant that seems to be colonizing Manhattan(more…)

Murray's Cheese Bar

How can a city so obsessed with cheese not have a cheese bar until now? That is the main question that comes to mind with Murray’s Cheese Bar on Bleecker Street. New York has wine bars galore, cheese stands in the Greenmarket and specialty cheese counters popping up in so many groceries, but Murray’s is the first NYC wine bar specifically dedicated to cheese.  (more…)

Insta-Report: The Blogher Fashion Show

I’ve seen a lot of fashion shows in my time, but not until this weekend did I ever get to be in one. As part of the Blogher 2012 conference, more than a dozen bloggers walked in a show outfitted by online retailer 6pm. I was somewhat terrified of having a Carrie moment on the runway and have a newfound appreciation for professional models. Fortunately I made it through without falling, even on 6-inch Jessica Simpson platform stilettos. (They’re surprisingly comfortable, BTW.) Here are a few Instagram shots from backstage. Follow me on Instagram for up-to-the-minute fashion and food updates – especially as we head into fashion week!  (more…)

Street Chic: Trilby in a Blue Polka Dot Dress, Mister Sunday

I have been wearing and seeing a lot of blue this summer – maybe it’s some sort of  psychological antidote to the heat. Blue and white polka dots in particular were on a few guests at the Mister Sunday party, including model off duty Trilby, seen here in a cute Madewell dress.

Street Chic: Thrift Store Floral Dress, Mister Sunday

At the Mister Sunday party, this guest from College Fashionista was one of several to wear a cute and colorful dress found at a thrift store. Blame the economy, but it seems we’ve come full circle back to New York’s vintage shopping height of the mid-’90s, when Broadway thrift store Antique Boutique was cooler than any Madison Avenue flagship. If you’re craving new summer fashion but your clothing budget is already maxed out, remember: there’s always Beacon’s Closet for cheap chic.

Street Chic: Stefany in a Vintage Floral Dress

Stefany Mohebban of the style blog Pretty in Thrift wore this cool vintage floral dress to this weekend’s Mister Sunday party in Brooklyn. The necklace is vintage too. I’ve also been noticing bright fuchsia lipstick on a lot of trendsetters.

Fonda

For chefs and diners, Mexican is often the food of compromise. It may be challenging to round up a gang for a meal of foie gras doughnuts in Bed Stuy, but I never have any problems getting anyone to go out for margaritas in Manhattan. And if the Mexican restaurant in question also happens to serve excellent food, everybody wins.  (more…)

Street Chic: Andrea in Vintage White Overalls

At yesterday’s Mister Sunday party in Gowanus, beauty ad executive Andrea took a break from DJ Justin Carter’s set to pose in this amazing outfit of vintage white Gap overalls layered over a gray tank top. Her elaborately braided hair and the vintage glasses make the look super individualistic.

Hanneli Mustaparta in Tibi

Remember when it was cool enough to wear things like – oh, I don’t know – pants? I am already craving the chill of fall and found inspiration in this look on Hanneli Mustaparta. The cute striped peplum jacket is Tibi, the shoes Tabitha Simmons, and the bag Acne. Close ups of her accessories after the jump.  (more…)

Street Chic: All White Maternity Look

Not surprisingly, all white outfits have been a popular choice during the blisteringly hot summer of 2012. But I especially like how this woman on Madison Avenue interpreted all white for maternity with a long white cotton skirt and crochet tank top. The black and white Chanel bag is the icing on the cake.

Maria’s Kitchen, Shelter Island

The authentic taste of Mexico City has sprung up in a most unlikely place: the WASPy enclave of Shelter Island, New York. Across the street from a sleepy pizza shop that’s been there forever and down the road from the IGA supermarket is a little bodega with cheerful yellow shutters outside and racks of Polvorones cookies, Maseca corn flour and Jarritos soda within. The cars in the front parking lot run the gamut from soccer mom SUVs to flashy convertibles to landscaping trucks. The shop is a labor of love from Maria Schultheis, who worked in the juice bar that occupied this space last summer. Spending days at the juice bar and nights as a house cleaner, she saved up enough money to open Maria’s Kitchen, which introduces the food of her native Puebla to the Hamptons. (more…)

Polo Street Chic: Ivory Romper and Wedge Sneakers

Love the combination of modern and traditional in this look at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. The romper and wedge sneakers are very summer 2012, but the mix of ivory cotton and pale brown leather shoes goes back to the 1920s.

Preppy Look, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Going away for the 4th of July? Depending on your destination, it may be time to brush up on your preppy fashion. At the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, this fellow photographer nailed it with a baby blue blazer, striped oxford, striped belt and loafers. The white jeans are a newer take on the preppy look, but in places like the Hamptons, they work.

Hat With Pink Feathers, Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Love how the dramatically tall pink feathers in the hat match her sundress.
