Charlotte Kemp Muhl Performs, Rebecca Minkoff
The bohemian life of Charlotte Kemp Muhl was the inspiration for Rebecca Minkoff’s fall 2011 show – and she and Sean Lennon put on a live performance before and during the show. Kemp Muhl wore a beautiful long silk dress in rust colored floral. The collection itself featured some great coats and jackets, a fab silk leopard jumpsuit, and of course, lots of yummy bags in saturated autumn colors like hunter green and eggplant.
Camel Coat and Knotted Scarf, Rebecca Minkoff
An adorable look outside the Rebecca Minkoff show. The cuffed and pleated khakis, penny loafers, sunglasses and scarf knotted on her head are very 1950s, and the denim shirt and camel coat are very right now.
Nautica Collection, AW 2011
Nautica’s fall 2011 collection was inspired by the Sleeping Bear Dunes region of Lake Michigan and showed a pitch-perfect eye for colors derived from boating. Pops of “safety orange” color should be popular next fall and winter; on the water, this is the exact color of the inflatable marks used in racing. I like the idea of taking the eye-catching quality of something so integral and practical and incorporating it into everyday clothing. The slate grays are also an excellent match for the pebbly Lake Michigan shoreline. (more…)
Layers of Gray, Nautica
Though in my last post I complained about the sea of gray at NY Fashion Week, I’m now going to do a 180 and post this photo of a guy in gray. Why? Because saying one thing and turning around and doing the opposite is so fashion, darling!
But really: one advantage of a neutral palette is that it brings the focus to texture and material, like this chunky knit sweater under a herringbone wool coat and a plaid hat. The unzipped patent leather boots keep it from getting too conservative.
Striped Scarf, Jason Wu
Love this splash of color and tortoise shell sunglasses in a sea of black and gray. Also, the more shows you have to attend in a single day, the smarter it is to wear jeans!
Casablanca Look, Rachel Comey
The wide-brimmed hat, dark lipstick, vintage bag and a flared wool trench are so Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca.” Bringing a little 1940s mystery to modern-day fashion.
Fur Hat and Fisherman’s Sweater, Rachel Comey
I love the mix in this outfit, and it’s something we’re seeing more and more. A fancy fur hat gets dressed down with a swingy wool coat and fisherman’s sweater, but then the bright silk scarf elevates the whole look again. Also: more lace-up boots, red lipstick.
Joanna Hillman at Rachel Comey
The ever-fashionable Joanna Hillman of Harper’s Bazaar arrived at yesterday’s Rachel Comey show. Note the new, longer skirt length! And the green coat with an oversize fur collar is a winner. Also note the difference in shoes: many fashion editors are eschewing last year’s teetering stiletto platforms for more practical lace-up boots and a chunkier heel.
Two Party Looks, Bubble & Cube
One of the most stressful things about fashion week can be deciding what to wear – especially to the after parties. You know the quandary: dressed up, but not too much, making an effort, but not trying too hard. On the left, she wears an adorable Stevie Nicks-style hat and sexy but seasonally-appropriate black top with slit sleeves. A pop of color from hot pink lipstick is the finishing touch. On the right, this guy is on the forefront of a new trend: piled-on accessories for a male maximalist style.
Susie Lau, Bubble & Cube Party
Fashion blogger Susie Lau of Style Bubble hosted a party last night at the W Hotel Times Square showcasing her writing and the fashion photography of Shini Park of Park & Cube. Lau has always been an expert at layering, and last night wore a cardigan and openwork lace tunic over a tee and black pants for an individualistic, playful look.
Porkpie Hat, 14th Street
Before we segue into the sometimes zany world of NY Fashion Week guys, here’s what downtown guys are wearing. The porkpie hat and double breasted coat conjure up the “Boardwalk Empire” era of 1920s toughs and the show’s star Michael Pitt, a huge style influencer right now.
Model Off Duty in Leather Pants, University Place
Beautiful layers of a chunky cashmere knit sweater, tweed coat and thick scarf get the finishing touch with sexy leather leggings on this woman on University Place, presumably a model. They are all back in town for NY Fashion Week, which starts this Thursday.
Winter Layers, University Place
You know it’s been a long winter when we’re overjoyed that it’s 41 degrees outside. Take advantage of the (slightly) warmer weather by ditching the heavy coat for layers: sweater, jacket, scarf, as in this cool look above. Also note the hint of early-’70s styling here – hair parted in the middle, round sunglasses – which will be key come spring.
Houndstooth Trousers, Madison Avenue
Whenever non-fashion industry friends ask me to name a big new trend, I tell them “wide-legged trousers.” Inevitably they shriek in horror. How can wide-legged trousers possibly look good on anyone but a model? This is how. They’re actually very flattering, since they elongate the legs. Hers make a particularly bold statement in houndstooth, but neutrals work just as well.
Black and White Bows, 8th Street
Such a cute Parisian ingenue look on the streets of NY. Black and white from head to toe, and even her rain boots have bows!
