Khaki Dress and Cat Eye Glasses, Prince Street

Such a cool look on this woman outside Olive’s in Soho. A khaki dress gets some edge from the black leather piping and laces, and the cat eye sunglasses and red lipstick compliment the late ’60s style pixie haircut. On her feet, one of the new trends I appreciate the most: flats.

Navy Romper With Belt, Prince Street

Aurelie Claudel

Anyone willing to bare her legs in yesterday’s 80-degree weather brought out the shorts, especially rompers. This model-esque woman in NoLita sported a navy blue short shorts romper with a wide caramel-colored belt, black sandals and cross-body bag, perfectly mixed and accessorized.

Buckle Wedge Heels, Soho Steps

Absolutely adored her wedge heels with buckles on Prince Street yesterday.

Asiadog

Corn dogs are best avoided if you can’t help wondering when the actual hot dog last saw the light of day before it was encrypted in a wall of starchy, mysteriously cylindrical corn breading. Last month? Or several millennia ago?

The Dog and Kimchi Pancake Corndog, Asiadog

So it was with some trepidation that I ordered the kimchi pancake corndog ($6) at the new eight-seat restaurant and takeout joint Asiadog on Kenmare street. Theirs was no machine-made corn dog, however, but a reassuringly asymmetrical dog, pictured right, much like an actual kimchi pancake would look when recently wrapped around a beef hot dog and deep fried until golden brown. The results were astoundingly delicious, drizzled with a sweet and spicy homemade sauce a lot like the addictive sauce in a good bulgogi.  (more…)

Graphic Print Mini, By the F Station

Long, flowing maxi skirts may be all the rage this spring, but let’s face it: if a girl’s got the legs, why give up the mini? Here, a graphic print mini gets paired with a cropped black biker jacket, long white cardigan and black tights – the quintessential day-to-evening outfit for the Lower East Side.

Women and Men in Hats, Easter Parade

From the bespoke to the cartoonish, there were lots of hats at yesterday’s Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue, where the clouds suddenly parted and we were treated to brilliant sunshine for a few hours. Above, on the way to the parade in a hat festooned with Peeps and jellybeans. More hats on men and women after the jump. (more…)

Military Jacket, One Day Without Shoes

Despite the no-shoes mandate, many of the volunteers at the recent One Day Without Shoes charity event still dressed quite fashionably. Military jackets continue to be a great transitional option each spring, a practical outer layer worn here with a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag and striped sailor top.

Agnanti Meze

The same crew that set out on this winter’s Arthur Avenue food tour met up again a few weekends ago, this time in Astoria. Our mission: to seek out authentic Greek food at the end of the N line.

Interior wall, Agnanti

It may seem like typical Greek food is everywhere now. Most supermarkets stock deli containers of tzatziki and eggplant dip, kalamata olives and pitas, but a lot has gotten lost in translation. This country that prides itself on the super freshness of its ingredients and the strict tradition of its recipes, neither of which you’ll find in most processed Greek food.  (more…)

Sailor Stripes, Brooklyn Flea Williamsburg

Here’s how guys can work sailor stripes for spring – bold, vibrant and crisp. I also like how the white soles of his sneakers (intentionally?) match the white tires of his Moth bike.

Vandaag

CLOSED

Vandaag may not be a German restaurant per se – the name is Dutch for “today,” and the staff will only categorize the food as “Northern European-inspired” – but Germans would probably be surprised at how popular this type of cuisine has become in New York now. During a recent trip to Berlin, our Danish and German friends pled with us after we took them to the third German restaurant in a row: Please, no more German food! In Berlin, it seems they’d much rather go out for Italian.

Not here. New restaurants Edi & the Wolf, Heartbreak and Vandaag are all serving variations on German food within a six block radius of one another – and generating a lot of buzz. Fortunately, there’s substance behind the fad at Vandaag, which brings real craftsmanship to the idea of a modern Northern European restaurant.  (more…)

Khakis and a Burberry Trench, Seventh Avenue

A great look for a guy outside the Oscar de la Renta bridal show. Also note the rolled up cuffs and colorful socks – a key look for men right now.

Edi & the Wolf

Interior Edi & the Wolf

We weren’t sure what to expect from Edi & the Wolf, a new Austrian place that opened on Avenue C. The stein-pounding din of Zum Schneider across the street? The restrained elegance of Kurt Gutenbrunner’s Wallsé?

Neither, as it turns out. Edi & the Wolf introduces New York diners to a different breed of Austrian restaurant, the type that’s usually attached to a wine cellar and serves typical Austrian fare like schnitzel and spätzle. It’s the brainchild of Eduard Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban of Seäsonal, an Austrian place that was overlooked by many New York critics until it earned a Michelin star(more…)

White Blazer and Teal Blouse, Seventh Avenue

A well-dressed crowd showed up for yesterday’s Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012 bridal show on Seventh Avenue in the Garment District. This outfit of a teal silk button down and white blazer with a structured black bag and wedges is perfect for work – even on a day when the temperature goes from 60 to 77 degrees.

Two Looks, Brooklyn Flea Williamsburg

The new Brooklyn Flea on the Williamsburg waterfront has attracted a huge crowd with its great shopping, food trucks and beautiful city views. On these women at the first Flea, I loved the denim jumpsuit on the right, especially paired with an orange bag and big bangles. On the left, sailor stripes look even better with a toggle coat.

Empellon

FOMO: fear of missing out. It’s the feeling that strikes whenever a much-hyped new restaurant opens and oh my god you might not get there while it’s still hot and everyone’s talking about it unless you get there right now. It’s the feeling that has gripped New York ever since foodie mania has slowly crept into the city’s zeitgeist – and anytime ramps are in season.

Exterior, Empellon

Given the amount of hoopla surrounding the opening of Alex Stupak’s new restaurant Empellón, diners should be forgiven for mobbing the place. A WD-50 alum takes on Mexican cuisine! In a cool new space in the West Village! This was in every imaginable media outlet online and off a couple weeks ago. Well, take a deep breath, because if you haven’t gotten there yet, you’re not missing out that much.  (more…)
