Model in Denim Shorts, Chrystie Street
There’s no question about it: ultra short denim shorts are the uniform of choice this summer for models off duty. Why not, when you’ve got the legs?
Striped Skirt, Chrystie Street
Proof that a high-waisted skirt can also be sexy, this striped black and white tube skirt is effortlessly sophisticated.
Rockaway Taco
There’s been a lot of press about the Rockaways lately – the surfing, the scene and the new food kiosks opening up on the boardwalk. But before you get distracted by the latest additions, don’t forget to hit up the original shack that made the Rockaways a food destination, because it’s still the best out there.
Started by David Selig in 2008 and chefed by Andrew Field, Rockaway Taco is a beachy, Montauk-esque takeaway joint across from abandoned houses and around the corner from a row of boarded up shops. There may be more Williamsburg weekenders in the Rockaways now, but this area still has a long way to go until total gentrification. Colorful little Rockaway Taco is a beacon of good food and good vibes, unskippable if you’ve already made it all the way out to the end of the A line. (more…)
Kids’ Fashion, Madison Avenue
It’s amazing how some things never go out of style in preppy kids fashion, namely polo shirts, docksiders and Stan Smiths – the same thing kids were wearing when I was growing up. Two great summer looks for boys on Madison Avenue.
White Overcoat in the Rain, Fifth Avenue
I always find it difficult to figure out what to wear on rainy summer days. This white cotton overcoat was a practical, lightweight and pretty solution at the Central Park Conservancy Luncheon. The earrings are Chanel.
Think Pink, Union Square
Retro, high-waisted 1950s shorts are making a comeback in a big way this summer. Here they look great worn with a floppy wide-brimmed hat with heels and pink accents throughout for extra pinup girl appeal.
In the Crowd, 2011 CFDA Awards
Anytime there was a dull moment on the CFDA Awards red carpet (which was rarely), we turned around to scan the crowd of non celeb guests. Often they were just as well dressed, like this guy in an expertly styled preppy look. The bow tie, windowpane plaid shirt and khaki blazer with pocket square are perfect for a formal-ish summer event.
Short Shorts, Madison Avenue
If you’ve got legs, now’s the time to show them off with short shorts, a big hit for S/S 2011. Also of-the-moment: tie-front shirts, like this one in denim.
70s Redux, Union Square
A cool ’70s redux look in Union Square complete with wide legged jeans, platform sandals and an afro to boot. Plus, the striped sailor bag is great for shopping the Greenmarket.
Floral Dress, Union Square
Fashion has gotten decidedly more feminine this season, with last summer’s boyfriend jeans and racer back tanks giving way to maxi skirts and dresses and lots of floral prints. Above, shopping in Union Square in a flirty, feminine dress paired with flat metallic sandals.
Vintage Khaki Jumpsuit, Madison Avenue
Really loved this fashion forward look on a man on Madison Avenue. The khaki jumpsuit is vintage, but it echoes Phillip Lim‘s critically acclaimed menswear collection.
CFDA Takeaway: Red Carpet Trends
Even if you’re not attending anything as glamorous as the CFDA Awards this summer, chances are you’ll have to get dressed up for a wedding or charity event. Black tie attire is always tricky to navigate, but especially in hot weather, so take a few tips from these fashion pros.

Slideshow: Best Dressed at the 2011 CFDA Awards
To corrupt a line from Who What Wear Daily: I don’t care who you are, I just care what you wear! Here are the best looks from the CFDA Awards red carpet on men and women – not just who wore it, but which designer they wore, whenever the information is available. The standouts were not just celebrities like Naomi Watts and Gerard Butler, but fashion industry insiders like Michelle Parker, Hal Rubenstein and Linda Fargo.

Lady Gaga, CFDA Awards 2011 Red Carpet
Needless to say, the most anticipated arrival of last night’s CFDA Awards was Lady Gaga. What would she wear? By Gaga standards, her custom-made black Thierry Mugler dress was on the tame side – form fitting, with a huge tulle train – but the studded bodice was pure Gaga. She also pulled off the impressive feat of walking the red carpet in 24-inch platform wedges – with grace, all the way.
