Leopard Top and Cut-Offs, Prince Street

As tweeted, I am so tired of seeing everyone in NYC in shorts and t-shirts. The outfit can easily be upgraded with a nice top like this leopard blouse, a nice bag and sheer black flats, with all the comfort of shorts. See? Not so hard.

Salinas

While the rest of New York crams into Birreria, it’s time to explore alternatives a little off the beaten path. After all, no matter how strong the draw of a new place, outdoor dining should be about relaxation, not suffering through a crowd-induced panic attack.

One outdoor spot that opened recently with a sliver of the press attention Batali’s place has gotten is Salinas, an enchanting little tapas place in Chelsea. The main wow factor here is the decor, designed by hair and makeup artist Donald Mikula and his wife Mary Catherine. There are vintage-y Spanish touches like wire mesh fronted bar cabinets and exposed stone walls, hanging flowers and flattering lighting.  (more…)

High-Waisted Skirt, Houston Street

Another popular sartorial choice this summer has been the high-waisted, flowy mini skirt, here in salmon pink on Houston Street. It looks particularly feminine paired with a ruffled blouse.

Short Shorts Overalls, Union Square

One of the most interesting fashion stories this year is the huge trend that wasn’t: maxi skirts. Despite their appeal to the fashion set (including me, who featured them on this blog several times), on the streets they lost major ground to short shorts, a counter trend. One of my friends described her failed attempt at maxi skirts and dresses this way: “My husband hates long skirts.”

Is it the extreme heat or the avoidance of man repellent clothing that won out? Who knows, but the people have spoken. Short shorts like this cool outfit of black linen overalls and a backpack have become the uniform of summer 2011.

Birreria

New Yorkers were elated when Mario Batali and Lidia Bastianich’s Italian food emporium Eataly opened last year. There was only one problem: Eataly didn’t seem to be intended for New Yorkers. A massive marketing and PR effort across the U.S. and in Europe meant that Eataly instantly filled up with tourists – even the ones who can get decent biscotti at home.

Fortunately, the Red Apple bus crowd does not seem to have discovered the new rooftop restaurant on top of Eataly yet. You’ll still be elbowed by the crowds on your way to the bar at Birreria, but at least none of those elbows will be loaded down with Century 21 bags.  (more…)

Mile End

Exterior, Mile End

There are a lot of similarities between Torrisi Italian Specialties and the Brooklyn deli Mile End, and not just because Mile End snagged Aaron Israel from the kitchen at Torrisi. Like the Italian spot, Mile End takes a traditional cuisine and reinvigorates it with fresh ingredients and modern technique. If restaurants of past years specialized in haute barnyard, restaurants like Mile End are leading the way in haute ethnic food.

Southwestern Dress, the Bowery

Southwestern patterns are popping up everywhere this summer, spurred by two collaborative Opening Ceremony collections, one with traditional Western clothing brand Pendleton and another with Rodarte in a Southwestern-themed line. Here it’s perfect for the city heat in bright orange.

80s Redux, Union Square

There’s been a lot of ’70s redux going on in fashion right now, but what about the ’80s? It doesn’t have to be all hipster-y gold spandex, as this woman proves with a chic, colorful graphic mini and red shoes.

Best Outdoor Dining 2011

As much as we complain about the heat, it’s so nice to be able to dine al fresco when summer finally comes to New York. But what we’re looking for isn’t any old table plunked on a sidewalk next to a major truck route, but a nice setting, fun scene and preferably some good food. Here is an opinionated guide to the best outdoor dining in town.  (more…)

White Dress, Union Square

Loving the all-white look for summer 2011. The spectator shoes add a nice 1920s touch to this dress, and the artfully braided updo is perfect for hot weather.

Masculin Feminin, Union Square

Usually when people talk about the masculin-feminin look, they’re referencing le smoking, as seen on several guests at the 2011 CFDA Awards. But it can be dressed down too, as with this look of slouchy plaid trousers, a white buttondown with tuxedo ruffles, unisex afro and not a stitch of makeup. True personal style.

Open on University: Sausage Inc.

CLOSED

On the heels of the news that no hot dog is free of nitrates, even the organic, all-natural kind, new take out shop Sausage Inc. has opened on University Place, replacing the short lived and ill named “Wok to Walk.” According to the window signage, Sausage Inc. “grinds, seasons, and links all sausages every day on the premises,” using “no chemicals, no MSG.” Freshly made sausage is usually not cured, naturally or otherwise, so head here instead of Sabrett’s if you’re feeling remorseful about your own personal Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.

Black and White Polka Dots, Fifth Avenue

Keep an eye out for polka dots this fall, when the nautical stripes have been stowed away. They were a hit on the Marc Jacobs fall 2011 runway, often mixed in various sizes as seen here on Fifth Avenue.

Black and White Stripes, Chrystie Street

There it is again: black and white stripes, this time on our neighbor delivering new artwork to the Jen Bekman Gallery.
