Leather Skirt, Vivienne Tam Show

Here’s another look from last September’s fashion week that’s still very relevant right now. The leather skirt should be a key piece for fall, especially this one by Joie. Love the necklace, too.

Sarah Rutson in Short Shorts, Donna Karan Show

If you barely remember how to dress yourself in anything other than flip flops and shorts, it’s time for a refresher course before NY Fashion Week. Fortunately many of last September’s attendees were so ahead of the curve, their looks can easily be adopted for this fall.

And you don’t necessarily have to give up those shorts. Here, Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson wears short shorts with a long necklace, military green Proenza Schouler PS1 bag (always in fashion) and lace-up suede boots, dressing up a sporty chic outfit for the Donna Karan show.  (more…)

Backless Maxi Dress, Prince Street

Bill Cunningham managed to spot way more maxi dresses than short shorts this summer, particularly near his usual stomping grounds on 57th and Fifth, the opposite of what we saw downtown. It begs the question: do downtowners dress much differently than uptowners? Here’s a bohemian version of the maxi dress, backless and floral, downtown on Prince Street.

Purple Beaded Dress, Jazz Age Lawn Party

A vintage beaded dress looks great with ropes of pearls and a headband. The lipstick is spot on, too.

Gray Bowler Hat and Suspenders, Jazz Age Lawn Party

Some of the best outfits at the Jazz Age Lawn Party mixed new and old – like a bowler hat, suspenders, high waisted trousers and a plain V-neck tee.

Jeffrey’s Grocery

The past few years have seen a huge influx of “foodies” on the New York scene, Yelping, Chowhounding, and Four-Squaring about every bite. But don’t worry, New Yorkers haven’t been totally domesticated yet. For every one person jarring and pickling Union Square Greenmarket produce at home, there are probably four with nothing but a jar of pickles in the fridge.

Jeffrey’s Grocery in the West Village started out as a gourmet corner store with limited food service. Freshly cut flowers occupied the front, and the shelves were stocked with fancy pastas, olive oil and other top notch pantry supplies. Then the store closed and reopened as a plain old restaurant, with two- and four-tops where the flowers were. The lesson? As much as New Yorkers talk about food, they don’t actually prepare it themselves.  (more…)

On the Grass, Jazz Age Lawn Party

Two 1920s looks – one in all black with a great hat and the other in all white with lace gloves.

On the Dance Floor, Jazz Age Lawn Party

Big band jazz by the Dreamland Orchestra might have been old fashioned, but it was certainly danceable. The vintage fashion came alive on the dance floor. More photos after the jump.  (more…)

1920s Menswear, Jazz Age Lawn Party

Many of the men at the Jazz Age Lawn Party wore knickers and argyle knee socks, a look that would have been considered positively relaxed and sporty in the 1920s. But men have it slightly easier than women when it comes to recreating ’20s fashion: vests, ties and newsboy caps like these are still being made today.

White Lace Flapper Dress, Jazz Age Lawn Party

While it’s true that Coco Chanel popularized the little black dress in 1926, it was more for evening than for a summer garden party. Kudos to everyone who figured out that white was the standard 1920s attire for a hot summer day – like this vintage lace flapper dress with a beaded hem. All white in the summertime is still a chic choice today.

1920s Hair and Makeup, Jazz Age Lawn Party

There were lots of great looks at this weekend’s Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island, but the best were ones that really took you back in time. Her hair and makeup – plus the fab vintage jewelry – looks like something out of a 1920s soda shop ad. If this were a melodrama from the era, she would be the beautiful hat check girl.

Post Office

A lot of places in the city call themselves restaurants – but because it’s easier for a new establishment to get a full liquor license when there’s food involved, they may just be mega bars with a menu. (Remember Japonais, anyone?) Rarer is the place that calls itself a bar that’s secretly a restaurant.

Sam Glinn is the chef in the lilliputian kitchen of Post Office, a Williamsburg bar dedicated to American whiskey, bourbon and rye, and named after a Bukowski novel. From a corner of the one-room space, done up with dark wood, tin ceilings and memorabilia propped on the shelves, Glinn, formerly of Brooklyn Star and Momofuku Ssam, dishes out a limited but memorable array of reinvented classics.  (more…)

Lunch: Ai Fiori

A restaurant on the second floor of a Midtown hotel may not sound promising, but Ai Fiori has couple things going for it. Not only is it the latest project by chef Michael White, it’s such a zen, air-conditioned oasis that you will forget you’re on the second floor of a hotel in Midtown.

This is particularly good if you work in Midtown and can take advantage of the discounted Restaurant Week lunch happening there now. Step out of the steamy city, up to the second floor of the Setai and into an elegant, minimalist, flower-bedecked space that recalls the old days of hotel dining, when many of the best restaurants were in hotels. It’s like walking out of the urban jungle and into civilization.  (more…)

Models in All Black, Mott Street

No matter what fall fashion brings – this year, it’s supposed to be jewel tones à la Gucci F/W 2011 – you can rest assured that models off duty will still wear black.

The sunglasses at top look a lot like a pair of black Burberry shades on my fall shopping list right now. Also love the Alexander Wang bag on the sidewalk.
