Ginger in a Vintage Skirt
If skirts are a must-have this spring, vintage skirts are even more appealing, because they’re charming, timeless and usually one of a kind. Take Ginger, a Scottish girl who went to several of the Milan shows. Here she wears a vintage YSL skirt that she scored at a secondhand store for “six quid” – not bad!
Kate King at Alberta Ferretti
Model Kate King wore a sheer pale pink skirt exiting the Alberta Ferretti show. Love the color and the vintage-y style.
Tamu McPherson at Marni
I loved Tamu’s colorful outfit at the Marni show. The All the Pretty Birds photo blogger wore a Suno dress, red Paul Smith coat, blue Gianvito Rossi shoes (more blue suede shoes!), and pink Karen Walker sunglasses. Bright colors and patterns like hers are a great way to celebrate spring.
Karl-Edwin Guerre at Gucci
The cover of today’s New York Times features a photo of the Instagram guys, whose company was just bought for $1 billion. But what did they wear to the photo shoot with the New York Times? Ill-fitting jeans and slovenly, untucked button downs. It’s really a disgrace!
Guys: there is a difference between looking casually cool and looking like a slob, though Silicon Valley in particular seems blind to the distinction. Better to follow the lead of my fellow photo blogger Karl-Edwin Guerre of Guerreisms, who arrived at every day of an epic three week fashion season in Europe perfectly turned out in elegant clothes. Yet his clothes are comfortable, and they can move – otherwise there’s no way to make it through day after day on your feet. If a photographer can look this good, so can the founders of Instagram.
Julia Sarr-Jamois at Marni
During fashion week we had no idea that Julia Sarr-Jamois, editor of Wonderland, was going to be modeling in two big spring campaigns, but the results for Tibi and Barneys are quite beautiful. Here she is – a model off/on duty? – in an elaborate floral embroidered black patent leather jacket at Marni.
Bryanboy at Marni
Fashion blogger Bryanboy arrived at Milan’s Marni show in style. Love how the Roberto Cavalli fur plays off the pattern of the Suno pants. The sweater is Comme des Garcons, the yellow bag Dolce & Gabbana, the studded shoes Prada.
Giovanna Battaglia in Valentino
Giovanna Battaglia wore this khaki and lace Valentino dress to the Roberto Cavalli show in Milan. The faceted black necklace at the collar is not part of the original runway look but her own addition – bellissima!
Sailor Look, Outside Fendi
Oksana On wore this beautiful sailor look to the Fendi show. The full skirt adds a new twist. Close up of her clear lucite clutch and multicolored manicure, after the jump.
Ada Kokosar at Max Mara
The Copycat Chef: Roasted Vegetable Antipasto
One of the best things about many Milanese restaurants is the antipasti bar. You pay one fixed, economical price for a buffet plate full of vegetables, olives, calamari, salumi and cheeses, rather than order antipasti item by item as in New York. It’s a much cheaper and easier way to get a mealtime supply of veggies.
When I came back to the U.S., I couldn’t find a recipe that replicated the roasted zucchini in the delicious antipasti plate at Primafila, a little pizza place on a side street off the Duomo, pictured above. This recipe for a mix of roasted vegetables came close, but here’s a revised recipe, simplified further, which can be served as an antipasto or as a contorno. All fresh vegetables need is a little olive oil, lemon, pepper and salt to become the perfect side dish.
Denni in Fausto Puglisi
Fashion blogger Denni of Chic Muse posed for us on the tram tracks outside the Dolce & Gabbana show. This was a real fashion risk, mind you, because these are active tracks with huge trams running through every few minutes! Her Fausto Puglisi is also a fashion risk in all the right ways. Love the elaborate beading at the waist and the flared skirt. The bag is vintage Gucci, the shoes Prada.
Sarah Rutson at Marni
Bright colors and kooky outfits may be catnip for street style photographers like me, but what do you wear if you want to look chic but professional for work? Lane Crawford’s Sarah Rutson sets the bar with her cool business attire. At Marni in Milan, she wore gray layers on top with a hint of pattern and embroidery at the sleeve, plus a luxe leather skirt with a slight teal sheen to it. Pulled together and gorgeous.
Anna Dello Russo in Dolce & Gabbana
Several designers did lace for spring 2012, but I love how Dolce & Gabbana’s lace also has appliquéd flowers for that extra push of whimsy. And j’adore Anna Dello Russo in a Dolce & Gabbana blue lace dress en route to the designers’ show. (more…)
Striped Jacket, Outside Max Mara
One advantage of the unseasonably warm weather this spring: New Yorkers actually have a chance to wear jackets, not segue immediately from coats to tank tops. This season there’s a great variety of luxe jackets out there in a mix of materials and colors, like this one with striped sleeves and lining and leather piping outside the Max Mara show in Milan.
