CFDA Awards Red Carpet and Full Fashion Analysis!
One great thing about a black tie event for the fashion industry? You’ll never be bored. Guests at the Swarovski-sponsored CFDA Awards last night wore daring, dazzling looks with no worries of playing it safe for the mass media, since this 7th Avenue version of the Oscars is a little more sheltered than the Hollywood event. That’s not to say the women and men here weren’t elegantly dressed: fabulous gowns and tuxes abounded, but look closely and you’ll see towering shoes, short hemlines and plunging necklines that really pushed the envelope in terms of what works for the red carpet.
Sarah Jessica Parker created the biggest stir of the night in a gorgeous, art nouveau-style Alexander McQueen gown. She presented a Board of Directors Special Tribute Award to the late designer at the ceremony.

Diane von Furstenberg
An American fashion maven and one of the originators of New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park, Diane von Furstenberg always draws a celebrity-laden and appreciative crowd to her shows. Guests arrived suitably glammed up for the occasion.
A white lace dress brings in the spring, but the black biker jacket and tights make this a great transitional look for the end (thank God) of winter. (more…)

Marc Jacobs Show SS10
Marc Jacobs may have scaled down the number of celebrities at his shows, but the Marc Jacobs show is always the real “Fashion’s Night Out.” Everyone in the industry puts on their most glamorous evening wear for a fab night on the town, starting with the show and ending with Lady Gaga’s performance at the after party.
Lady Gaga wore a reliably kooky get-up to the MJ show: flat black hat tied on at a rakish angle, Marc Jacobs dress, white blazer, and a studded mask. (Bunny ears are to Madonna as studded mask is to Lady Gaga?) Unlike many newly-minted pop stars, however, she has always been obsessed with fashion: Check out this WWD article on her as an indie rocker with style, before she hit the music stratosphere.
Her date is Marc Jacobs’ partner Lorenzo Matone, who also looked quite dashing.

Street Chic (and Red Carpet): 2009 CFDA Awards
When the fashion world brings a Hollywood date to an awards ceremony, the glamour quotient is extreme. This was black tie dressing at its best and most tricky, since the skies alternately threatened rain or just plain mugginess. But both the male and female guests pulled it off with aplomb, playing with hemlines (of both trousers and dresses) and reinterpreting what “black tie” means for 2009.
The “muse” theme of this year’s CFDA Awards (Council of Fashion Designers of America) encouraged designers to bring someone who inspires them as a date. You could almost imagine them designing clothes with a specific beautiful woman in mind.
It also meant that the women were accompanied by designers for this fashion event, not their husbands/significant others, who stayed at home. Everybody wins! (more…)

Fashion Week SS09: Ports 1961
And, after a Time-Warner-Cable-induced delay, we return.
It’s not truly Fashion Week unless you go to at least one pod people show–you know, the kind where the outfits are so out there that the models look like pod people. Ports 1961, the label by Canadian Tia Cibani, was one such show, with its motif of tree-inspired dresses, painterly colors, super-wide high boatneck collars, and hats worn like tribal masks, all drawn from the paintings of the Canadian artist Emily Carr (1871-1945). But during a fashion week where nearly everyone else was playing it safe, her unchecked creativity was a breath of fresh air.
The show attracted a similarly creative crowd.
Patrick McDonald in all black-and-white except for one yellow pocket square.
Love the surrealist detail on his hat–an eye in the middle of a spiderweb.
More black and white–the pants are Yoshi Yamamoto.
Beautifully abstract tie-dye transitions to fall.
Mickey Boardman and his signature necklaces.
Love her wry look. Look out for candy-colored wayfarers like these in the spring. They also made an appearance on the runway of the Walter show.

THE SHOW
If you can get past the theatrics of some of the looks, you’ll see that Cibani was one of the few designers during New York Fashion Week to anticipate what the Wizard of Oz herself, Miuccia Prada, would be unveiling a couple of weeks later in Milan. Ports 1961’s subtle metallic poplins are an exciting step forward in the same direction.
A favorite look of the collection. This delicate yellow hue appeared several times throughout. Necklace made of bone?
The play of colors here is amazing–Cibani uses sheers and reflective fabrics that are constantly shifting colors as the model moves.
A transparent striped tunic, silk palazzo pants, and statement necklace made of yarn.
Crazy hat-mask.
Gorgeous brown shimmery dress.
Look at the similarity to the Prada dress that appeared a few weeks later, though in typical Prada brassier form.
But back at Ports 1961, just when you thought Cibani might be getting too commercial, she whips out a pod people look. Yay!

Fashion Week FS08: Halston
A supercool crowd showed up for the relaunch of Halston. Not sure yet about the collection – very drapey. Some of the drapey pieces could become iconic Halston items, but other day wear outfits… It’s alarming when pants make even the models look fat.
Fortunately, the people-watching alone was worth the trip.
Anna Wintour arrives.
Severe military chic – a Karl Lagerfeld level of cool.
Silver jacket.
A model promoting Members Only jackets. The bomber styles are the best sellers, but I like her fitted Balenciaga-esque one.
A good hi-lo mix of Brit wear and Converse sneakers.
Meredith Melling Burke has been wearing a lot of flowy dresses. This one looked particularly good in animal print mixed with the neutral gray coat.
Kate Betts and compadre.
Another example of mixed neutrals – black plus brown bag, plus the red scarf that pops.
Whispering. I totally made that same gesture in junior high and thought no one would know I was whispering in class.
Carine Roitfeld and Mickey Boardman. Love her booties!
A cool downtown look.
Worth noting the stirrup stockings with heels. It’s been spotted a couple times now at the shows…

The one on the right – Kate Lanphear – may win my vote for fashion icon of the week. Very consistent, catchy, rocker chick style. Skinny black jeans with platform boots.

Fashion Week SS08: Anne Klein
And on the seventh day, the fashion world wore jeans.
It’s a testament to Isabel Toledo’s talent that so many heavy hitters came to the Anne Klein show on the last morning of a particularly grueling fashion week. The artsy Toledo lent a dose of chic and a bit of folly to the traditionally straight-laced brand, where she is entering her second season, without straying too far from its core audience. Suits had an industrial edge. Taking a cue from her husband Ruben, she painted washed silk dresses with colorful flowers. Truly original.

Fashion Week SS08: Michael Kors
If so many spring collections have been “Deauville,” Michael Kors’ could be called The Swimmer, after the 1968 film starring Burt Lancaster. Preppy fashions abounded, from women’s Lilly Pulitzer-esque pink and green prints to men’s Bermuda shorts in outrageous (by preppy standards) brushed gold khaki. It was a fun collection in the classic American style.
The show was immensely popular and packed to capacity, so much so that late arrivals were turned away. Below, the guests.
