Viktor & Rolf SS2011

This show took place on a Saturday in the Tuileries. But as with Parisians themselves, who shop along the Rue St. Honore wearing the chicest coats and shoes, most of the guests did not relax their high style at all for the weekend.

Calvin Klein SS2011

The Calvin Klein show makes for great people watching, but West 39th Street outside the studio gets really, really crowded. A narrow corridor forms with celebrities coming in on one side and boxes being wheeled out the service entrance on the other. At least it’s a reminder that it still takes a lot of elbow grease to run this show.

When the fashion shows move around town (and around the world), a flock of exotic birds follows them: the elaborately-attired invitees who land among regular civilians, then take off until the next season. (more…)

Donna Karan SS2011

Quintessential New York designer Donna Karan received rave reviews for her last collection, and her latest show this past Monday was a big draw on the fashion week circuit. Chic business attire was the look for this weekday show.

“Greige” is slated to be the It color for fall 2010, as with this grayish-beige dress with sculptural folds, bag and knotted sandals. (more…)

Elise Overland SS 2011

Norwegian-born designer Elise Ă˜verland is known for body-con leather designs that look great on the models that attended her show this Sunday. But some of the best new designs on the runway were tiered silk dresses and blouses and long, flowy pants – a great new silhouette for spring that would look good even on non-models.

Violinist Hanh Bin, who performed on the runway, warmed up before the show in PVC leggings and platform heels. (more…)

Alexander Wang SS2011

It’s always an interesting crowd outside the Alexander Wang show. Like Marc Jacobs especially in the early years, this designer attracts some die-hard fashion groupies as well as the usual roster of fashion show attendees. Some guests took a n0-holds-barred approach and dressed in absolutely outlandish outfits. If there was anywhere to do it, it would be for the fashion person’s fashion person, Alexander Wang.

This choice of clothes proved prescient – Wang showed many all-white looks for spring and no black at all. (more…)

Sonia Rykiel and John Galliano

Two shows converged at the industrial warehouse setting of Halle Freyssinet in eastern Paris. Sonia Rykiel’s show was followed immediately by John Galliano’s, and both drew many fashionably-dressed people out in the bitter cold.

Bright Yellow Jacket and Guy in Fur, Sonia Rykiel and John Galli

A great bright yellow parka adds great color in winter. (Despite the fact that it was a March day, it was freezing.) Note the cropped trousers and oversized scarf. On him: black fur. It’s not just for women anymore. Excellent sunglasses on both of them. (more…)

Michael Kors

Michael Kors‘ popular appeal comes from more than just Project Runway: His clothes are both luxurious and wearable. Attendees at last week’s show included the usual set of editors and buyers plus deep-pocketed customers and the stylists who represent them.

Kate Lanphear at Michael Kors

Elle’s Kate Lanphear in a chic drop-waist, double-breasted gray coat, black sunglasses and an onyx ring. This is what’s so great about her style: it’s very personal. When everyone else is doing a cinched waist coat, she does a dropped-waist coat. (more…)

Calvin Klein Show SS10

It was high-octane glamour outside the Calvin Klein show at their showroom off Seventh Avenue on Thursday. A celebrity contingent including Eva Mendes, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, Rose Byrne and Kerry Washington arrived to take in the show. And the rest of the attendees didn’t look too shabby, either.

Oscar de la Renta Show SS10

The Oscar de la Renta show always sets the standard for uptown chic, and this season was no exception. The only thing lacking was the socialite contingent, which seemed diminished this time around. Let’s hope the uptown girls follow Anna Wintour’s Fashion’s Night Out initiative and accept that there is no shame in shopping – especially if you’re supporting another critically acclaimed de la Renta collection.

Red Dress, Oscar de la Renta Show

This red dress and classic black heels was the most striking outfit coming in the door. It turned out to be especially appropriate given Oscar de la Renta’s spring line, which featured bright Latin colors. (more…)

Marc by Marc Jacobs Show SS10

Though Marc by Marc Jacobs is an American brand, the clothes have this quirky chic that seems quintessentially Parisian – even more so now that Marc lives in Paris. Lynn Yaeger stood outside with one of her reporter colleagues, marveling at all the clothes going by. The show attracts a creative crowd that really sees fashion as a form of self-expression – including Yaeger herself.

Lynn Yaeger at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Show

Definitely one of Yaeger’s most fabulous outfits ever. Her sense of style is timeless – for instance, she’s been wearing oxfords, one of the big trends of the season, for years now, and the intarsia doggie detail on the corner of her sweater evoked the lions in the “Doctor Doolittle” theme of Anna Sui’s show – the show that would take place the day after this photo was taken. Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!

We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”

They both have great taste in blazers.

Tons of celebs and fashion faves – Michelle Tractenberg, Peaches Geldof, Carine Roitfeld and more after the jump. (more…)

First Kate Lanphear Sighting of the Season

OK, it’s in WWD, not in real life, but still. In Prep School, a piece that details how various fashion celebs about town are preparing for fashion week, Kate Lanphear reveals that she’ll go to any fashion week party sponsored by Modular Records or a vodka company. (We agree – no one wants to drink DiSaranno all night.) She hopes the new YSL boots drop in time for fashion week, harbors a secret crush on Rob Pattinson of Twilight, and describes what she’ll wear as “same old, same old,” which we assume means her uniform of skinny black jeans, a palette of neutral gray, white, and black, and some killer accessories thrown in.

kate-lanphear-wwd

It’s true that many of the most talented fashion folk have a uniform of sorts – Michael Kors and his white jeans, Anna and her Oscar de la Renta skirts, and Sally Singer and her repertoire of colorful, WASPy prints and no makeup. The prime exception is Rachel Zoe, but witness the nightmarish process of her selecting an outfit for fashion week on “The Rachel Zoe Project.” With five FedExed suitcases of clothes to choose from, the options are just too overwhelming.

Kate Lanphear in Paper Mag

There’s an excellent photo of Elle editor and Gastro Chic style muse Kate Lanphear in this month’s Paper Magazine in their “Beautiful People” issue, shot by Jiro Schneider. Here she poses with stylist Keegan Singh.

Look at this close up of her fabulous studded bracelets! From Hermes, naturally. The photo was styled with clothes and accessories courtesy of the mag, but this is true to what she wears in real life.

Love this portrait. For fashion week sightings of her, click here. And it’s definitely worth picking up Paper Magazine to see the whole spread.

Marc Jacobs FS09

Nowhere was the radical change in NY Fashion Week more apparent than at the Marc Jacobs show. Where last season Posh and JLo walked the red carpet hand in hand amid a crush of paparazzi, now there were just gates, strict warnings about invitations, a small group of editors and buyers going in, and one very disappointed paparazzo standing next to me. But the end result isn’t that different from a (not much) earlier time before celebrities discovered fashion week, when it was actually all about the clothes.

Melissa Ventosa-Martin of TMagazine, right, in a fabulous feather (?) coat.
Anna Wintour arrived 25 minutes ahead of time, though she is even harder to photograph now that she comes with two very large bodyguards blocking the way. A result of the fact that 60 Minutes may be doing a story on her? P.S. This may be the only time that you’ll ever see Anna Wintour and Ray’s Pizza in the same frame.

Carine Roitfeld. She wore this coat several times during fashion weeks here and in Europe. It’s a myth that the fashionably dressed “never wear the same outfit twice.” In fact, it seems that when they’re really in love with a piece, they’ll wear it over and over. Certainly a more sensible (and economical) approach.

Cropped trousers like these will soon be everywhere for spring.

Brightly striped cardigan.

This mix of lurid colors looked quite jarring as this woman was going into the Marc Jacobs show; after it was over, however, it seemed prescient. Marc Jacobs showed a lot of loud ’80s colors that injected a note of optimism for fall – photo below from Style.com.

Love the slash of bright red lips against the neutral gray of her trench.

A quirky haircut and funky blazer.

The fur flies as this woman runs to get to the show in time. Ever since the complaints about his show starting hours late a couple years back, Jacobs has been almost sadistically punctual.

An excellent menswear look.

More menswear style, this time on Roberta Myers, editor in chief of Elle.

Joe Zee in a Barbour jacket.

Her rolled up shorts fall into that “boyfriend”-anything trend. Also watch for camouflage and any army-navy-store type clothing – very recession-friendly.

A fellow photographer who looked to be a model-turned-photographer – very pretty and chic.

Love, love the dilapidated chic of this outfit. The scuffed loafers and Burberry trench look like relics of wealthier times.

It’s true – bowl cuts are appearing on women. It doesn’t seem like such a bad thing to try right now, but if you wait 30 seconds, it may get annoying.

Chanel bags are another totem of dilapidated chic. Since they’re classic, you could have bought it years ago, or even got it from Mummy. Either way, it looks right.

A great mix of high-low with the fur jacket and jeans, plus the sparkly headband.

Glenda Bailey of Harper’s Bazaar steppin’ out in some hot shoes.

Kate Lanphear of Elle joking around with some guy friends. She was captured in a similar outfit by TopShop, which featured her in their newsletter – a fashion coup!

More colored fur.
Nina Garcia in all black.

Cecilia Dean in a striking black-and-white coat.

Meredith Melling Burke carrying a still-fab Chloe handbag.

Lynn Yaeger’s mash-up vintagey style seems particularly a propos this year.

A detail shot of her amazing embellished Gucci bag – rabbits! – and knit scarf – cartoon characters!

Grace Coddington carrying a Stephen Sprouse Louis Vuitton bag.

The leopard print is great, but this model has amazing hair! Wavy-haired girls, this is your moment.

A model after the show, proudly sporting the ’80s hair and makeup from the runway.

Another model in outrageous ’80s hair and makeup. Where to go to show it off? Too bad Area is no longer.
