A Year in Cycling
One of the most lasting and unexpected impacts of the pandemic on New York City may be the transformation of our city streets. In the first few months of the shutdown, when subways were reserved for essential workers, New Yorkers took to cycling and many of them never stopped. Bikes whizzed by where trucks once idled, and even now that car traffic has returned, cyclists and outdoor diners have not relinquished their claim on public space.
Cycling also influenced what we wear, the key question being, can you pedal in it? Whatever that is, be it a dress or a pantsuit or bike shorts, it’s probably your best option for daytime dressing.
Street Style: Hudson, NY
Some shots from Hudson, NY – one of the last fall weekends of 2020, for Footwear Plus. There are a lot of cool people in this little town who have mastered the comfy-artsy-chic look. One of the must-have accessories? A dog. I’ve never seen so many dogs per capita in my life! Several of the dogs photographed here were recent rescues who looked very happy in their new home town.
Overalls and Polka Dot Mask, Union Square, June 2020
Another great look from the Union Square Greenmarket. Love the mix of city and country.
WFH Beauty: Candace Marie at Self Portrait FW2020
I have to say I love a hat on a video call – on women or men. It frames the face and looks like you put in some effort, even if you’re not leaving the house. Candace Marie wore a great one to the Self Portrait show this winter. Colorful winged eyeliner was another beauty trend we saw on the street.
Retro Chic: Marina Ingvarsson at Collina Strada FW2020
If you only get to step out once a day, make your outfit a great one! A timeless look on Marina Ingvarsson, seen this February at the Collina Strada show.
Just Because… Paris
Leaf Greener at Loewe.
Janelle Monae at Stella McCartney FW2019
Bella Hadid at Alberta Ferretti FW2019
Pretty sure that model Bella Hadid made this girl’s day when she posed for a selfie right after this shot was taken. Coveralls and workwear are a thing now. I like how Bella mixed hers with a (faux?) fur hat and luxe shades to glam it up.
Seasonless Dressing: Tessa Barton at NYFW, February 2018
But get ready for a cold one here in NYC… looks like it’s going to be below freezing for much of NYFW!!
Black and White Stripes, Dumbo 2018
Back after a long absence. I have been photographing in the streets of NYC these past few months, but have been particularly unnerved by the abuse of users’ personal information by Facebook – and by affiliation Instagram – so I haven’t been posting much. It’s quite a conundrum for photographers, since many of us have become dependent on these platforms to publicize our work.
At any rate, here’s a cute look from the streets of Dumbo in December, which I don’t think will be of any use to foreign agents or political consultants. This was for a print trade publication Footwear Plus that goes out to shoe designers everywhere. This month’s street style story was on the boots New Yorkers are wearing.
Out of the Shadows: Linda Tol at Koché SS2019
Plaid suits like this one on Linda Tol were everywhere this fashion month – and they’re perfect for this time of year.
Peace Out, Fashion Month: Jan Quammie at Akris SS2019
Fashion Month is finally over! Posts from this month have been appearing on Instagram at @gastrochic – with many more favorite shots to come here. In this one, Jan-Michael Quammie wore classic French blue and red to the Akris show in Paris.
Street Style Sashay, Outside Giambattista Valli FW2018
It’s not a performance if you don’t have an audience! Drivers at Paris Fashion Week observed a street style shoot taking place in the middle of the road outside Giambattista Valli.
Sunny Outlook: Arizona Muse at Stella McCartney FW2018
Model Arizona Muse emerged from the car into a swarm of photographers outside the Stella McCartney show. Did she remember me from the Paris and New York shows years ago (see below posts)? I don’t know, but at least she looked my way. Very nice!
