Bryanboy at Preen
The color of his pants (Jil Sander, I think?) isn’t exactly red – more of an ’80s neon, like something out of a Michael Mann set. Brilliantly over the top with a white fur vest.
Hilary Alexander at Prabal Gurung
The Telegraph’s famous fashion correspondent wore an beautifully embroidered Byzantine-style coat to Prabal Gurung’s show. With the fur hat and scarf and a black and crimson floral dress underneath, she conjures up turn-of-the-last-century Russia.
Fur Hat and Fisherman’s Sweater, Rachel Comey
I love the mix in this outfit, and it’s something we’re seeing more and more. A fancy fur hat gets dressed down with a swingy wool coat and fisherman’s sweater, but then the bright silk scarf elevates the whole look again. Also: more lace-up boots, red lipstick.
Russian Fur Hat and Military Jacket, Union Square, January
Eric Wilson of the Times Styles section included trapper hats as one of “10 Looks We Never Want to See Again” post-2010. (Also included: anything with studs or skulls.) Very well, but what happens if you have to spend hours outside in sub-freezing temperatures?
Trapper hats are infinitely practical, but you could put them away in favor of their Russian cousins, the huge fur topper, for similar warmth. Insulated faux fur will work just as well. Paired here with a navy blue military jacket, the look is sharp and timeless.
Fur Coat and Knit Hat, Madison Avenue, January
In the mid to late ’80s, possibly the last time fur was as popular as it is now, the typical socialite look was a lavish mink worn with no hat, just a blowout and heels. This time around, fur coats come in a variety of forms including faux, they’re worn by a variety of people, and they’re often paired with more casual accessories like knit hats – a downtown spin on an uptown classic.
Carine: A Style Retrospective
While we’re sure she must have something interesting up her sleeve, it’s devastating to see Carine Roitfeld leave French Vogue. In her position as EIC there, she attended dozens of fashion shows every season with grace and amazing style.
At Calvin Klein SS2010
Fortunately, she didn’t surround herself with bodyguards (note to Anna: photographers just want your picture, they’re not trying to kill you), so it was easy to observe her fabulous outfits, which were sexy, playful, ladylike and always paired with killer shoes and boots. Her creative approach and artist’s eye will be sorely missed in the front row.
More photos after the jump!
Madison Avenue, November
Just before the cold came bearing down on us, jackets and sheer stockings were on display on Madison Avenue. Fortunately many of these looks can still carry you through the winter – just add warm accessories.
Camel coats have been around for so long that you have to be careful not to look like your grandma in one of them. One solution: go short for a flirty look, seen here with stockings and heels. (more…)
The Bowery, November
Most of us never would have believed this 10 years ago, but the Bowery is shaping up to be one of the more fashionable avenues in New York. On the corner of East 4th Street, the Bowery Hotel is a favorite place to stay among the fashion set, and on the stretch of the Bowery just south of the hotel, Peels and Blue & Cream attract a chic crowd of diners and shoppers. Here’s a random sampling of stylish passers by over a few days on the Bowery.
Black leather pants are now a wardrobe staple. Don’t be afraid to mix black and brown, as with this look. (more…)
Last Show: Louis Vuitton SS2011
Alas, it’s always sad when Fashion Week ends, so I’ve been delaying this post for weeks. But on the last day in Paris, the Louis Vuitton show capped off the week, and a number of interesting models, celebs and fashion people made the scene.
A model leaves the show in a dramatic black fur cape, long black skirt and black felt hat. (more…)
Chanel SS2011
Some of the most glamorous women in the world converged upon the Grand Palais in Paris last week for the huge, blockbuster Chanel show that won rave reviews. As ever with Karl Lagerfeld’s shows, many guests wore Chanel from head to toe in a show of support (that verges on adoration) of the French master designer.
Courtney Love in a pale pink Chanel dress, Chanel bag and pearls. (more…)
Christian Dior SS2011
Apologies in advance for the number of photos from this show – 32 – but there was so much great fashion outside Dior! First we had many of the key players for Paris Fashion Week dressed to the nines, then a promenade of models leaving the show – several of them in black leather leggings, the garb of choice for models this fall. If you’ve got legs….
Carine Roitfeld with Mario Sorrenti. I love how she mixes this leopard coat with purple lace-up shoes – unexpected and fun. (more…)
Balmain SS2011
Before there were slim cut cargo pants on every retail floor on every corner, there were slim cut cargo pants on the runway at Balmain. This French label spearheaded the military chic trend that has resonated with consumers over the past few seasons. Slightly androgynous but always sexy, Christophe Decarnin’s designs have quite a following, as evidenced by the cool crowd outside the Le Grand Hotel.
A fabulously tough look. Note the camouflage – a pattern that appeared on several fashion-forward editors. (more…)
Oscar de la Renta SS2011
This season’s Oscar de la Renta show was particularly exciting – it took place during Brooklyn Tornado! You will see the sky get darker throughout these photos – that was not nightfall but the storm coming in. Fortunately we were on Park Avenue and avoided the actual tornado – but for some, it still meant running through a crazy thunderstorm while clad in Oscar de la Renta.
Just before the storm hit. Absolutely fascinated by this woman in chartreuse. (more…)
Marc Jacobs SS2011
One of the biggest adrenaline rushes of New York Fashion Week is the Marc Jacobs show, even now that it’s mostly celebrity-free. This may be due to the fact that the designer is now mercilessly punctual after receiving complaints about show delays several seasons ago, starting the show at exactly 8pm no matter who hasn’t made it inside yet. The result can be a mad dash for the door in evening clothes.
Prescient in her attire: Marc Jacobs showed ’70s looks for spring in retro colors and long, louche silhouettes like this one. Start wrapping your mind around brown for spring now, because it’s been in several collections. (more…)
Diane von Furstenberg SS 2011
The weather turned distinctly autumnal on the Sunday of New York Fashion Week, as rain came down on Lincoln Center Plaza before the Diane von Furstenberg show. Umbrellas and trench coats were put to good use.
Kate Lanphear. I know you’ve seen this outfit in the previous post, but I liked this portrait of her. While most of us just “dare to be different” some of the time, she has a distinct sense of style rooted in Goth otherness – this one combines a vintage rocker tee with a sleeveless trench. It reaffirms the importance of experimentation in fashion, instead of just following what everyone else is doing. (more…)
