Street Chic: Mr. Brainwash Party

Who is Mr. Brainwash? Is he the videographer Thierry Guetta, who set out to do a documentary on British street artist Bansky then became a street artist himself, or, as film critic Manohla Dargis suggests, is Bansky just playing a prank on all of us? You could closely examine the new exhibit Mr. Brainwash: Icons on West 13th Street or check out the (faux?) documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” both opening tomorrow, for any clues. Or you could stop asking questions and start dancing and drinking champagne: neither Mr. Brainwash nor Bansky will stop you.

Ports 1961

Ports 1961 has gained more and more attention since the brand started showing in the Bryant Park tents at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week a few years ago. Designer Tia Cibani’s ethereal but practical designs attracted top editors and trendsetters to Thursday’s show.

On the runway, pale dove gray is wonderfully flattering and is emerging as a big color for fall 2010. (more…)

Fashion Week Redux: 10 Must-Haves

Now that the dust has settled on NY Fashion Week, what’s the takeaway? The good news: Classics are in, so anything you’re buying this season really should be a keeper. Think Burberry trenches, Chanel bags, black heels, menswear staples and red lipstick. Even on the indie side of the equation, where leather and studs rule the day, you’ll find things you’ll wear again and again.

fashion-week-trends-2009

Though this buying guide is set up in an ideal vs. steal format, Fashion Week made one thing clear: Quality counts. Many of the clothes on the guests and the runway were beautifully tailored, and though you can find knockoffs at Forever 21, there’s an obvious difference the two. Even if you can’t afford the real thing, the shows were a nice reminder of what “designer” really means. Not crazy logos or bling, but creativity, quality and craftsmanship.

Calvin Klein Show SS10

It was high-octane glamour outside the Calvin Klein show at their showroom off Seventh Avenue on Thursday. A celebrity contingent including Eva Mendes, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, Rose Byrne and Kerry Washington arrived to take in the show. And the rest of the attendees didn’t look too shabby, either.

3.1 Phillip Lim Show SS10 – Front Row

The fashion set broke out yet another round of fabulous outfits for day seven of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, where Phillip Lim showed in the tents. Set against a 007-esque mirrored backdrop, the collection featured sportswear in relaxed layers, gray with pops of red, and a trompe l’oeil pleated dress that was white walking in one direction, black walking back. The sequined party clothes were especially appealing.

Leather Mini, Phillip Lim Show

A successful take on the ’80s look – very “Addicted to Love” meets Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. Expect to see more PVC/leather skirts like this through the winter – and yes, tube skirts are back. (more…)

Oscar de la Renta Show SS10

The Oscar de la Renta show always sets the standard for uptown chic, and this season was no exception. The only thing lacking was the socialite contingent, which seemed diminished this time around. Let’s hope the uptown girls follow Anna Wintour’s Fashion’s Night Out initiative and accept that there is no shame in shopping – especially if you’re supporting another critically acclaimed de la Renta collection.

Red Dress, Oscar de la Renta Show

This red dress and classic black heels was the most striking outfit coming in the door. It turned out to be especially appropriate given Oscar de la Renta’s spring line, which featured bright Latin colors. (more…)

Marc by Marc Jacobs Show SS10

Though Marc by Marc Jacobs is an American brand, the clothes have this quirky chic that seems quintessentially Parisian – even more so now that Marc lives in Paris. Lynn Yaeger stood outside with one of her reporter colleagues, marveling at all the clothes going by. The show attracts a creative crowd that really sees fashion as a form of self-expression – including Yaeger herself.

Lynn Yaeger at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Show

Definitely one of Yaeger’s most fabulous outfits ever. Her sense of style is timeless – for instance, she’s been wearing oxfords, one of the big trends of the season, for years now, and the intarsia doggie detail on the corner of her sweater evoked the lions in the “Doctor Doolittle” theme of Anna Sui’s show – the show that would take place the day after this photo was taken. Walter Show SS10

It’s no wonder that Walter gets picked up by all the best contemporary retailers: the clothes are fashion-forward but infinitely wearable, a hard line to straddle. Walter Baker’s new spring collection, presented at the Style 360/Elle space on September 15, was flirty and fun but also had the artistry of daring fluorescent prints, modern fabric, and a very precise cut.

The crowd followed suit, arriving in dresses and the short, full, high-waisted skirts that Walter helped popularize, like the one on this model, left front. At the end they all blew bubbles towards the crowd, a fitting send-off to playful show. (more…)

Marc Jacobs Show SS10

Marc Jacobs may have scaled down the number of celebrities at his shows, but the Marc Jacobs show is always the real “Fashion’s Night Out.” Everyone in the industry puts on their most glamorous evening wear for a fab night on the town, starting with the show and ending with Lady Gaga’s performance at the after party.

Studded Mask: Lady Gaga and Lorenzo Martone Arrive, Marc Jacobs Show

Lady Gaga wore a reliably kooky get-up to the MJ show: flat black hat tied on at a rakish angle, Marc Jacobs dress, white blazer, and a studded mask. (Bunny ears are to Madonna as studded mask is to Lady Gaga?) Unlike many newly-minted pop stars, however, she has always been obsessed with fashion: Check out this WWD article on her as an indie rocker with style, before she hit the music stratosphere.

Her date is Marc Jacobs’ partner Lorenzo Matone, who also looked quite dashing.

Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!

We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”

ADAM Show SS10

On a drizzly Saturday, many in the fashion pack let down their hair a bit and arrived at the ADAM show in their casual best. Leggings and skinny pants paired with oversize tops were a staple of Adam Lippes’ upscale sportswear for fall 2009, and many guests followed suit.

Boyfriend Shirt and Leggings, Adam Show

Erin Wasson x RVCA Show SS10

It was a dark and stormy Friday night, yet still the fashion folk (Joe Zee, Kate Lanphear, models and more) showed up for Texas model-turned-designer Erin Wasson, whose studied cool collection for RVCA has gained quite a following.

Belted Jacket, Motorcycle Jacket, Fur Vest: Three Chic Women, Erin Wasson Show

Three chic women. On the left, she feminizes a boyfriend blazer by cinching it at the waist with a wide black belt. Center – a great take on the ’80s look, with a studded leather jacket, black mini, and cowboy boots that nod to Erin Wasson’s Texas roots. Fabulous hair and makeup that’s ’80s-influenced without being over-the-top. Right, super skinny black jeans worn with a (faux?) fur vest over a tee for warmth.

If you’re still wondering how to wear black ankle boots, this photo should be your guide: just wear them as you would classic black pumps. (more…)

Jason Wu Show SS10

Fashion Week Spring Season 2010: Ports 1961 Show

It’s here… Mercedes Benz Fashion Week SS10! Just looking at the incredibly stylish people who showed up for the Ports 1961 show should jump start your fashion mojo. Skirts and strappy black sandals were the favored uniform of the day, though the new tailored cropped trousers made an appearance as well. On the runway, designer Tia Ciabani showed ethereal dresses and suits that were futuristic yet wearable, in shimmery draped pinks, silver, and gold.
