We’re thrilled that TyraBanks.com is running several Gastro Chic photos in their October fashion article: Fall Trend Watch: Fierce or Not So Fierce? You Decide. Head on over and vote on the fierceness of leather skirts, motorcycle jackets, and printed tights. Because it’s not really a trend unless the people agree!

Stars’ Worst Fashion “Don’t” Moments

Not only did Glamour put together a bitchin’ slideshow of fashion disasters, they somehow got stars like Mischa Barton, Nick Lachey, and Ciara to comment on their past mistakes. Here’s Mandy Moore before and after she acquired her current fashion sense:

Wool and the Gang Knitting Patterns

Ever looked at some overpriced knit scarf or hat and thought: “I could make that”? The designers behind Paris-based label Wool and the Gang agree with you. Lisa Sabrier and Carolyn Main have come up with a series of knitting kits that include yarn, needles, a pattern, and everything else you need to create chic hats, scarves, and even legwarmers.

Though knitting patterns have gotten better as more women take up the craft, most patterns don’t exactly look like they’ve been torn from the runway. Wool and the Gang’s are au courant, easy to make, and available on Net-a-Porter. The prices line up with our own experience of buying high-end wool for knitting projects (the kit for the pictured scarf is $85), but this time you’ll be more likely to actually wear the results outside the house.

Given the popularity of embellishment for fall 2009, these projects should be a fun and cheap way to get in on the action without springing for designer accessories. And since most of the craft stores used as sources are now online, you don’t have to live in NYC to rock these great trends.

Louboutin X Ladurée Macaroons

Heeere, Bunny, Bunny

What do you think of the Olsens’ mouse and rabbit ear get up for the Tokyo Opening Ceremony party? As mentioned, I haaaated the Louis Vuitton bunny ears on Madonna at the Costume Institute Ball. They even look dumb in the styled ads. With Madonna, as soon as she arrived on the arm of Jesus (Luz) five seconds after her divorce, it seemed like a typical attention ploy. But in the Olsens’ case, maybe they are just being their slightly weird selves?

Update: the ears are Maison Michel.

Razzle Dazzle: Fall Accessories Report

wwd-accessories-coverOn newsstands today is WWD’s fall accessories report, an important precursor to the September issue of the big mags – especially now that accessories may be your primary means of updating your look. Despite gloomy economic forecasts, fall accessories are all about glitz: sequins, sparkle, fur, and feathers abound. Here are some trends to track and some of the best buys from the issue, which spans labels from J.Crew to Givenchy. (more…)

Chanel’s Fall Bags Are Horrendous

lily-allen-chanelIn the news: per NYMag, the new Chanel ads featuring Lily Allen were shot by Karl Lagerfeld. More importantly, what is up with the bags featured in the ads? It looks like Karl decided to take some North Face sleeping-bag jackets from 2001 and turn them into handbags.*

How could we have missed this horror on the runway? How could Karl perpetrate this crime against fashion just when even the tackiest people are unwilling to take “fashion risks” they never should have embarked upon? It’s too bad given the resurgence of the classic Chanel cross-body chain bag as the arm candy of choice.

At least they’re cuddly?

Bruno: The Fashion World Reacts

bruno-gqGiving credence to the idea that fashion is part masochism, several in the fashion industry are disappointed that they weren’t parodied by Bruno, according to an amusing article in today’s WWD, “The In Kraut.” The much-anticipated fashion farce premieres tonight at midnight.

Trish Halpin, editor in chief of Marie Claire: “Getting name checked in Bruno is the ultimate fashion accessory. People want to be in the movie. It’s more insulting not to appear in it than to be insulted in it.”

Diane von Furstenburg: “He didn’t come to my fashion show. But I wish he had.” (more…)

Last (?) Lacroix Couture Collection Wins Raves

christian-lacroix-squareYesterday’s Lacroix couture show – potentially the last for the vaunted but financially-strapped haute couture label – won raves from WWD, which called it “perfection.”

Like Edina of “Absolutely Fabulous,” many of us would willingly sacrifice our first born to own some of these clothes and toss off the words “It’s Lacroix, darling!” The latest collection manages to be both somber and quietly ebullient, mixing elaborate detailing and draping with dark, neutral colors. Jeremy Scott at Revolve Clothing

Jeremy Scott Tulip Dress in Floral FlightThe word “edgy” is certainly overused, especially when it comes to fashion. What passes for edge is often just an echo of something that was once edgy – but not so for Jeremy Scott. The proof? In the past, he’s pushed the envelope a little too far and became fashion’s bette noire, inspiring absolute loathing from the press. Style.com doesn’t even cover his shows anymore.

But true chic is often a misfit (see Lynn Yaeger and Patrick McDonald), and that’s where Scott doesn’t disappoint. His spring line is now carried on Forward at Revolve Clothing, a site that’s worth watching for up-and-coming designers. Most of his spring designs are actually wearable this time around, and some are truly inspired, like this Tulip Dress in Floral Flights ($435). In this economy, if you’re going to buy anything at all, why not buy something outrageous?

The Color Purple: Lilac for Resort 2010

A look from Dior Cruise 2010 from The Fashion Spot

A look from Dior Cruise 2010 from The Fashion Spot

If you think you’ve tired of the It color of fall 2008, purple, think again, because it’s back all over again in a different hue. Miuccia Prada’s inspiration for resort 2010 was Art Deco Miami Beach, and while designers are claiming inspiration from all over the globe for resort 2010, Miami Beach pastels are popping up in many major collections, like Dior Cruise 2010, left.

In particular, lilac has infiltrated its way into several resort lines. It’s a welcome respite from fall’s jewel-tone purple, and if you’re doing the ’80s thing right now, this was also a big color in the era of Valley Girl.

Fashion Week – the Video Game?

gameGot a crazy press release last night that I might not believed had it not come from IMG, which puts on NY Fashion Week: Get ready for Fashion Week Live, the video game, due out in 2010. IMG has teamed up with 505 Games, makeup artist Pat McGrath and “fashion insider” Noel Gordon (who is Noel Gordon?) to create a video game based on the increasingly-unreal Fashion Week. It will feature “world-class industry gurus, top models and the star-studded runways of Fashion Week events worldwide.”

This raises several questions. Who exactly is the audience, if actual fashion insiders would sooner die of shame than admit to playing Guitar Hero? Also, this group hasn’t exactly been noted for its, er, technical prowess. (Remember those long silences before a show starts as someone figures out how to work the stereo.) So is it for the audience of teenage girls that tries to sneak into the Project Runway show during Fashion Week?

There are no details yet, but here are some suggestions for the structure of the game:

Michelle-Obama-fashionOne of the best things about attending New York Fashion Week is that guilty little pleasure of a mag known as Fashion Week Daily. Imagine real-time fashion and gossip analysis a la US Weekly, but featuring people you actually know/see all the time. It’s delicious!
