A Year in Cycling
One of the most lasting and unexpected impacts of the pandemic on New York City may be the transformation of our city streets. In the first few months of the shutdown, when subways were reserved for essential workers, New Yorkers took to cycling and many of them never stopped. Bikes whizzed by where trucks once idled, and even now that car traffic has returned, cyclists and outdoor diners have not relinquished their claim on public space.
Cycling also influenced what we wear, the key question being, can you pedal in it? Whatever that is, be it a dress or a pantsuit or bike shorts, it’s probably your best option for daytime dressing.
NYC Boots, November – December 2020: Uptown Edition
Another one for Footwear Plus: boots in the city in late fall and winter. This one took me to the Upper East Side during prime holiday shopping season, which was interesting. Despite the closure of shopping anchor Barneys [crosses self], women and a few men are still dressing up to walk up and down Madison and Fifth.
White Collar: Remembering RBG
Last February, we noticed several women at fashion shows wearing white lacy collars, often against black. It was one of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s most recognizable visual signifiers. The wearers were not just Americans, but women from all over Europe and Asia, many of whom were professionals who had left families behind for a week or more to attend the shows. There are also many tributes to the collar coming up now, everywhere from Instagram posts to knitting patterns on Ravelry. You could go the designer route or even find a few collars on Etsy if you tried – a democratic approach that would suit the inspiration.

Chiffon Chic: Halima Aden at Etro FW2020
Model Halima Aden arrived at the Etro show in flowy chiffon this February, and now there are more chiffon dresses and tops hitting the stores. The fall versions come in dark colors and paisley prints, often with puff sleeves – unstructured boho chic that feels right for the moment.
Monochrome Shift: Summer to Fall
During another unusually hot summer, women dressed in white from head to toe. Lightweight, all-white clothing was the only way to beat the heat when the city felt like a kiln.
Then, in the NYC version of crows appearing at the onset of fall, all-black outfits started popping up in mid to late August. And another summer comes to an end.

Striped Dress, 10th Street, July 2020
All the cool kids are wearing sneakers with sundresses or shorts these days – a great way to beat the heat while moving about the city. Here are two breezy looks on 10th Street last week.
Ti Amo, Milano
Fourteen days and what seems like a lifetime ago, Milan Fashion Week was the most enjoyable fashion week I attended this year. The weather was beautiful – sunny and 60 degrees – the clothes were cheerful pops of color, almost everyone was in a good mood, and the living was easy. It wasn’t until the last day that coronavirus started to affect the city. Milan, we are wishing you a return to la dolce vita very soon.
One important fashion takeaway from Milan fashion week: saturated color. This is one of the things Italy has always done best. Again we are seeing monochromatic dressing here, but revved up for spring. Think of it as superhero outfits, separates in the same bright color from head to toe, often a pantsuit. Interestingly, we did not see a lot of prints except as an accent, which is certainly a change from the wild mishmash of Prada and Gucci prints quite recently. And the pastels of yesteryear look washed out by comparison. (more…)

They represent people in many walks of the fashion world from models, influencers, aspiring influencers, society ladies, editors, and buyers. Whether you’re dressing to look all-business or just to have fun and get from place to place, here are a few ideas.

This was one of many logo’d bags seen this Fashion Month, and a new interpretation of the Valentino logo as conceived by the “kids” on Pierpaolo Piccioli’s design team. Look out for logo mania to take hold…
