Bright Colors, Bushwick, April 2021
Bright colors are popping up not just on tulips but on people on the streets of NYC – a trend we also saw in some of the bright, monochromatic menswear looks at last night’s Oscars. It seems to signal unbridled optimism after a long, cold winter.
Zendaya at NYFW, February 2014
I love looking through old photos and finding people I didn’t know or recognize at the time – like a baby-faced Zendaya at New York fashion week in 2014. There used to be a lot more stars at fashion shows before it became standard practice to pay celebrities to attend. Now few of them will come without being paid, it seems! Time was, they would come just for the fun of it.
That particular winter was the peak of the color-blocking trend, which has since passed. But look for more bright yellow this winter and spring – this cheerful shade is the Pantone color of 2021.
Mix and Match: Luis Borges and Raquel Strada at Lacoste SS2018
Two very sportif looks on Luis Borges and Raquel Strada in the Tuileries. Love this mustard color for spring.
Dresses and Sandals, Art Basel Miami 2017
On this frigid day in New York City, we’re still dreaming of sunny Miami and the great resort looks we saw there. At the Scope Art Fair, two guests wore painterly dresses with sandals. Chic and practical.
Give It a Whirl: Tiany Kiriloff at Valentino SS2018
Tiany Kiriloff spun around in a Valentino coat outside the show in Paris.
Giovanna Battaglia at Carven SS2016
Loved the clean sculptural lines and fall colors of this Salvatore Ferragamo dress on Giovanna Battaglia, spotted outside the Carven show in Paris. Another styling tip to note: turtlenecks are still going strong for winter 2015/2016.
Vika Gazinskaya at Schiaparelli FW2014
Summer is a great time to show off sculptural, minimalist fashion like this quilted print dress, her own design, on Vika Gazinskaya. The slicked-back hair continues on the minimalist vein.
Yellow and Blue Colorblock Coat, Outside Marni FW2015
Zlata Mangafic at Creatures of the Wind FW2015
Zlata! She has been one of our favorite models since she appeared on the scene a couple of years ago. She left the Creatures of the Wind show wearing a Prada shearling coat edged with brightly colored yellow and red fur, one of several bright furs we’ve seen on the streets recently. The shearling treatment here gives it a cool downtown ’70s edge.
Kind of Blue: Golestaneh at Elie Saab SS2015
A great hi-lo mix on blogger Golestaneh outside the Elie Saab show in Paris: a Stella McCartney colorblock sweatshirt with a blue miniskirt by Zara.
Elina Halimi at Stella Jean SS2015
Crop Top and Maxi Skirt, Outside Schiaparelli
Don’t think that because summer’s on the wane, so are crop tops. Long sleeved ones like this one are sure to be a popular choice come September and October, especially when paired with a cool maxi skirt.
Sofia Sanchez Barrenechea at Dior Cruise 2015
Sofia Sanchez Barrenechea wore a cool colorblock dress to the Dior Cruise 2015 show with a diagonal line of buttons that felt appropriately nautical for the occasion.
Colorblocking in the Rain, Outside Carven
Bright colors livened up a gray and rainy day outside the Carven show in Paris. Close up of her bag and banana holder – yes, that’s a banana holder – after the jump.
Solange Knowles at Marc by Marc Jacobs FW2014
It was so cold on the day that Solange Knowles wore this outfit that I couldn’t bear to run the photo until now. But now it is the perfect look for spring: a pink cotton suit mixed with with a colorblock coat.
