Bright Colors, Bushwick, April 2021
Bright colors are popping up not just on tulips but on people on the streets of NYC – a trend we also saw in some of the bright, monochromatic menswear looks at last night’s Oscars. It seems to signal unbridled optimism after a long, cold winter.
Kristen Bateman at Rebecca Minkoff FW2021
I have been drawn to fashion writer Kristen Bateman’s cheerful Instagram feed during this pandemic – always full of her signature bright colors and cool beauty tricks. Her crossbody bag – which is not a cat, in case you were wondering – is also quite timely.
Zendaya at NYFW, February 2014
I love looking through old photos and finding people I didn’t know or recognize at the time – like a baby-faced Zendaya at New York fashion week in 2014. There used to be a lot more stars at fashion shows before it became standard practice to pay celebrities to attend. Now few of them will come without being paid, it seems! Time was, they would come just for the fun of it.
That particular winter was the peak of the color-blocking trend, which has since passed. But look for more bright yellow this winter and spring – this cheerful shade is the Pantone color of 2021.
WFH Fit: Saturated Color, Outside Max Mara FW2020
Saturated color is one of my favorite things to see on the other end of a video call. Bring it! Even before the pandemic, there was a shift away from all black, and as you probably now know, it doesn’t photograph well. (Not to mention it adds another layer of gloom we don’t need right now.) This look is dressed up enough for a client call but roomy enough for sitting at your desk all day. Again note the chunky necklace: a key styling element.
WFH Fits: Clara Berry at Tod’s FW2020
A varsity-level WFH outfit with color, comfort and lots of style.
Ti Amo, Milano
Fourteen days and what seems like a lifetime ago, Milan Fashion Week was the most enjoyable fashion week I attended this year. The weather was beautiful – sunny and 60 degrees – the clothes were cheerful pops of color, almost everyone was in a good mood, and the living was easy. It wasn’t until the last day that coronavirus started to affect the city. Milan, we are wishing you a return to la dolce vita very soon.
One important fashion takeaway from Milan fashion week: saturated color. This is one of the things Italy has always done best. Again we are seeing monochromatic dressing here, but revved up for spring. Think of it as superhero outfits, separates in the same bright color from head to toe, often a pantsuit. Interestingly, we did not see a lot of prints except as an accent, which is certainly a change from the wild mishmash of Prada and Gucci prints quite recently. And the pastels of yesteryear look washed out by comparison. (more…)
All About the Mix, Outside Temperley SS2018
A cool and unexpected mix of a tee with damask culottes and gradient sunglasses outside the Temperly SS2018 show.
Breakfast on the Run: Tina Kunakey Di Vita in NYC
Now that we’ll spend the next few months bundled in multiple layers, it’s time to rethink your sweater game. Colorful granny sweaters like this “Lifestyles of the Visionary” one on model and actress Tina Kunakey Di Vita, spotted grabbing a little breakfast on the streets of NY, are particularly on-trend.
Walk the Line: Sita Abellan at JW Anderson SS2018
Love the always-colorful looks on Sita Abellan at the shows. At the J.W. Anderson show, she mixed a shearling jacket with a bright red print dress – and of course, her signature colorful hair.
In the Spring of Things: Pam Allier at Gucci FW2017
Pam Allier doubled down on bright colors, including cherry red pants, on a springlike day at the Gucci show.
Natasha Zinko at Elie Saab Couture FW2016
Natasha Zinko brought a pop of color to the Elie Saab couture show in Paris – and a ’70s look replete with purple glasses and blouse and yellow velvet pants. Expect more wild colors this fall as traditional autumn colors give way to the whole rainbow.
Star Struck: Sofia Sanchez de Betak at Valentino Haute Couture FW2016
Whimsical, colorful prints are going to be big this fall season, and we got a sneak preview of just how beautiful they can be with Sofia Sanchez de Betak’s star-printed look at the Valentino couture show in Paris.
Rachel Wang at Tome FW2016
Nothing says “summer” like a strong dose of color. Outside the Tome show in New York, Rachel Wang wore a pink Rodebjer dress that she accessorized with a pom pom sash and straw bag.
Colorful Stripes, Outside Blugirl FW2016
When it’s spring but it’s freezing: this is actually quite a familiar scenario, because this was the weather throughout this past fashion month. Soften the blow by bundling up with bright colors and graphic prints, like this guest with a striped jacket at the Blugirl show in Milan.
Polina Askeri at Jil Sander FW2016
Brighten up a rainy day with graphic prints and bright colors as Polina Askeri did at the Jil Sander show in Milan.
