White Collar: Remembering RBG
Last February, we noticed several women at fashion shows wearing white lacy collars, often against black. It was one of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s most recognizable visual signifiers. The wearers were not just Americans, but women from all over Europe and Asia, many of whom were professionals who had left families behind for a week or more to attend the shows. There are also many tributes to the collar coming up now, everywhere from Instagram posts to knitting patterns on Ravelry. You could go the designer route or even find a few collars on Etsy if you tried – a democratic approach that would suit the inspiration.
Anya Ziourova at 3.1 Phillip Lim SS2016
No looking back: Anya Ziourova wore 3.1 Phillip Lim to the forward-thinking designer’s September show in NYC.
Samantha Angelo at Chloe SS2016
New blogger Samantha Angelo of The Eye Travels turned heads this fashion week season with her statuesque beauty and flair for mixing different pieces. Outside the Chloe show in Paris, she belted a long Dries Van Noten coat, part trench and part duster, over an Acne dress with a pointed collar and Mary Jane-style Charlotte Olympia shoes. The military subtext to the outfit may especially work for another reason: she actually served in the Marines as a clarinetist in the United States Marine Band! Certainly a multi-talented player on the fashion scene.
Lily Aldridge at Prabal Gurung SS2015
If I remember this moment correctly, a beautiful, well-dressed woman walked into the Prabal Gurung show, a couple of us snapped her photo, but no one even asked her to stop – no one recognized Lily Aldridge, including me, until now. The Prabal Gurung show last fall was the first fashion show she ever attended as a guest. So here’s one from the archives: Lily Aldridge in a great Prabal Gurung print shift dress, outside the show last September.
Modern Madeleine: Marianne Theodorsen at Sacai FW2015
During Fashion Month it’s easy to overlook the actual photographers’ street style when some are dressed just as well as our show-going subjects. Marianne Theodorsen of the Style Devil wore a charming boater hat, collared shirt and white and ecru pleated skirt to shoot outside the shows in Paris yesterday. Modern Madeleine.
White Suit, After Balmain FW2014
Tina Leung at Balmain FW2014
A cool trench is a great way to brighten up a rainy day. Stylist Tina Leung of Tina Loves wore a colorful burgundy and blue wave print trench to the Balmain show in Paris.
Nasiba Adilova at Altuzarra FW2014
Buro 24/7’s Nasiba Adilova was all business in a black and white plaid suit, white overcoat and white oxfords at the Altuzarra show in New York.
Pretty in Pink, Outside Hermes
Like a certain other street style photographer at the New York Times, I am loving the pretty pastel pinks that are appearing like early signs of spring. Outside the Hermès show in Paris, a guest wore a pink cotton shirtdress wrapped with a pink wrap belt and accessorized with a matching pale pink bag and shoes. Beauty notes add the finishing touch: deep pink stained lips and lime green nails and toes. Detail shots after the jump. (more…)
Lynn Yaeger at Comme des Garcons
One of my favorite fashion writers ever, Lynn Yaeger, stopped for a moment outside the Comme des Garçons show in Paris for a photo. Her pretty and feminine outfit is quietly subversive – that’s a skull and crossbones motif woven into the Fair Isle collar. You can take the girl out of New York….
Pineapple Print Dress, Outside Chanel Couture
Cornucopia: A pineapple print dress outside the Chanel couture show was perfectly in sync with the abundance of the season. Bring on the fruit prints for these last few weeks of summer.
Taylor Tomasi Hill at Missoni
Anytime I see Marc Jacobs’ black and white stripes in all the spring magazines, I can’t help but think of this look on Taylor Tomasi Hill last February. Influencer!
Linda Wells at Balenciaga
Allure editor in chief Linda Wells brings professional polish to every outfit she wears during fashion week, but I especially loved the mix she wore to the Balenciaga show: Coat with contrasting lapel, mixed prints and a great leather pencil skirt. It looks both pulled-together and très chic.
