Photographer in a Southwestern Print, Outside Donna Karan

One of fashion week’s most stylish photographers mixes a red Southwestern print jacket with a black puffer coat, tweed scarf and studded biker boots, and it all works beautifully together.

Michelle Harper at Viktor & Rolf

True confession: I’ve almost given up on buying anything other than shoes and coats for winter. For five months of the year, it’s nearly all anyone sees of one’s outfit in cold New York, so you might as well have a statement-making coat. Michelle Harper wore a bold mustard yellow trench with a huge, sculptural lapel and matching shoes to the Viktor & Rolf show in Paris. It’s a great example of how one piece of clothing can make an outsized impact.

Navajo Cloak, Greene Street

It’s the end of March, and temperatures in New York are still below freezing. The only solution to this scenario may be to start dressing for fall 2011, when Navajo patterns like this one will still be very much in style. The American Southwest played a big part in collections by Isabel Marant and Filson (not to mention this spring’s Rodarte x Opening Ceremony collection), and it looks really fresh on the city streets.

Just a Regular Day in Paris

D. and I were walking past the Palais Royale before Paris Fashion Week really got started and espied this woman in a fabulous surrealist coat. A debate ensued about whether or not she was affiliated with fashion week. You never know, I said. She could just be French.

Joanna Hillman at Rachel Comey

The ever-fashionable Joanna Hillman of Harper’s Bazaar arrived at yesterday’s Rachel Comey show. Note the new, longer skirt length! And the green coat with an oversize fur collar is a winner. Also note the difference in shoes: many fashion editors are eschewing last year’s teetering stiletto platforms for more practical lace-up boots and a chunkier heel.
