Anna Wintour at Giorgio Armani
American Vogue was the most successful fashion magazine of 2011, increasing ad pages during a year when most magazines lost them. Because of its sheer size, it’s a big commitment to lug a copy of Vogue all the way from New York to Milan, but I did. Under Anna Wintour’s stewardship it’s still the thinking person’s fashion magazine, with wonderful essays and memoirs, not to mention Grace Coddington’s beautiful art direction.
The impeccably dressed Wintour is still the queen bee of fashion week. And street style photographers are overjoyed that, if she must travel with bodyguards, at least now they walk behind her. We can finally see what she’s wearing!
Linda Fargo at Etro
Here are some more bright pants for you, on Linda Fargo at Etro, mixed with a colorful fur scarf. They look so great in the spring light, especially now that the weather’s warming up in Milan. Though there are some skinny jeans in bright colors for spring, flared, tailored trousers in bright colors are particularly chic. The bag is Valentino.
Shades of Yellow, Outside Max Mara
Shades of yellow make up a feminine, springy look outside the Max Mara show in Milan. The black boots give it a little edge.
Alek Wek in White Lace
Alek Wek, former model for Gucci, sat front row at the show yesterday in a gorgeous all-white outfit including a white lace dress.
Wide Brim Fedora, Outside Gucci
Gucci’s increasingly pervasive influence in fashion is evident in the shape of this hat, which, though I think it’s Borsalino, not Gucci, echoes the FW2011 collection from the storied Italian house. Though Frida Giannini cited the ’70s as a major influence for that collection, I can’t help but see 1940s menswear in the wide brimmed fedora and the wide lapels on her tweed coat. Yet the whole effect is super feminine.
Meredith Melling Burke at Ports 1961
More white pants in February, this time on Vogue‘s Meredith Melling Burke, in a flared style that goes well with a simple camel coat. The look is luxe but classic.
Liz Cabral in an Orange Coat, Outside Derek Lam
Flare‘s Fashion Director Liz Cabral wore a fluorescent orange Joe Fresh coat to Sunday’s Derek Lam show. Bright, fluorescent pops of color have been a continuing motif this season, either as accessories mixed with black or neutral colors or as one big statement piece, like this fantastic coat.
Arizona Muse at Jason Wu
Model-of-the-moment Arizona Muse emerged from the Jason Wu show in hair and makeup – and a black coat with leather edging.
White Jeans and Plaid Coat, Outside BCBG
Garance Doré tweeted yesterday that her surprise winter staple has been white jeans. Indeed, if Michael Kors had anything to do with it, we would all wear white jeans all the time. Here they look great and springy with a colorful plaid coat and red bag, outside the BCBG show at Lincoln Center.
Monika Chiang FW 2012
There are new designers, and then there are new designers whose clothes are loved by models – and God bless you if you fall into the latter camp. Monika Chiang’s clothes are already a wardrobe staple for several Hollywood celebs – her first stores opened out in L.A. Now they’re a favorite of models like Elettra Wiedemann, who wore several of Chiang’s designs during a recent Refinery 29 photo shoot and at yesterday’s presentation in her official role as muse for the fall collection.
The fall collection was notable for its shoes, which ranged from flats to wildly studded high tops to death-defying stilettos made with a gilded metal spike. Jackets and vests made of fur, suede, wool felt and leather – or often a combination of two – were particularly luscious yet practical for city living. (more…)
Navy Toggle Cloak, Outside Louis Vuitton
If you can’t tear yourself away from dark winter colors just yet, at least try experimenting with navy, a lighter, springier neutral. Seen here: a hooded navy toggle cloak outside Louis Vuitton show. The look is a little bit collegiate, a little bit romantic, and all around flattering.
Tweed Coat and Spectator Shoes, Outside Lanvin
An aristocratic look of a voluminous tweed cloak with spectator shoes and a bob haircut. Unusual but compelling.
Mary Alice Stephenson
Mary Alice Stephenson changed up a basic black coat with a leopard print jacket and geometric disc necklace. Lace up boots are sexy enough for fashion week, but sturdy enough for snow.
Vanessa Friedman in a Red Cape, Outside Valentino
A pop of color is a great antidote to cold winter days. Financial Times editor Vanessa Friedman wore a bright red cape to the Valentino show.
Kasia Struss in a Tweed Coat
As tempting as it may be to envelop yourself in a sleeping bag-like coat every day this winter, cloth versions like Kasia Struss’ are a better choice whenever the weather permits. Here she leaves the Donna Karan show in a tweed coat with a rose in hand.
