Hamish Bowles in a Swarovski Crystal Bow Tie, 2012 CFDA Awards
As usual, Hamish Bowles takes the award for best in men’s fashion. At the 2012 CFDA Awards, sponsored by Swarovski, he wore a Swarovski crystal bow tie with his tux. The magenta socks are the icing on the cake.

Jessica Paré in Jason Wu, 2012 CFDA Awards
I am completely obsessed with Mad Men actress Jessica Paré. She had me at “Zou Bisou Bisou.” And she looked just as amazing in person when she walked the red carpet at this week’s CFDA Awards in this beaded black and fuchsia Jason Wu dress. Cute but edgy, much like her character on the show. The tassel earrings are by Eddie Borgo, another CFDA nominee.

Garance Doré and Scott Schuman, 2012 CFDA Awards
One of the issues many people have with black tie dressing: they get all dolled up in a style that doesn’t look anything like the way they normally dress. So it was refreshing to see Garance Doré and Scott Schuman looking like their normal selves to receive the CFDA media award, only even more fabulous. Garance wore a green Derek Lam dress, a nice, cheerful flash of color on the red carpet, and Scott a Dior tux. Congrats for the award, and especially for keeping it clean when so many other bloggers blur the line between editorial and advertising.

Lace was a big motif in the spring collections and also on the CFDA red carpet. Designer Jason Wu’s sheer blue silk crepe gown with a black lace underlay looked super sexy and glamorous on model Jessica Stam.

Arizona Muse in Diane von Furstenberg, 2012 CFDA Awards
Model Arizona Muse wore head-to-toe Diane von Furstenberg to the CFDA Awards. The silver puffer paisley dress and knee-high boots were particularly refreshing since this mod look runs completely counter to the rather tired mermaid dress trend. Like Arizona herself, this DVF outfit is a breath of fresh air.

Tabitha Simmons and Karen Elson in Proenza Schouler, 2012 CFDA Awards
Tabitha Simmons’ shoes have become a big favorite for celebs walking the red carpet, so it’s no surprise that the designer herself looked perfectly at ease in the same environment. The designer and former model, who won the Swarovski award for accessory design, wore a Proenza Schouler jacket and dress and shoes of her own design, as did model Karen Elson, in a green Proenza Schouler ensemble. These were two of my favorite red carpet looks of the night – elegant but daring.

Model Hilary Rhoda wore this fabulous blue Rebecca Minkoff dress to the 2012 CFDA Awards. The vivid color, the complex structure and sexy cutouts all combine for a modern bombshell effect.

In the Crowd, 2011 CFDA Awards
Anytime there was a dull moment on the CFDA Awards red carpet (which was rarely), we turned around to scan the crowd of non celeb guests. Often they were just as well dressed, like this guy in an expertly styled preppy look. The bow tie, windowpane plaid shirt and khaki blazer with pocket square are perfect for a formal-ish summer event.

Lady Gaga, CFDA Awards 2011 Red Carpet
Needless to say, the most anticipated arrival of last night’s CFDA Awards was Lady Gaga. What would she wear? By Gaga standards, her custom-made black Thierry Mugler dress was on the tame side – form fitting, with a huge tulle train – but the studded bodice was pure Gaga. She also pulled off the impressive feat of walking the red carpet in 24-inch platform wedges – with grace, all the way.

CFDA Awards Red Carpet and Full Fashion Analysis!
One great thing about a black tie event for the fashion industry? You’ll never be bored. Guests at the Swarovski-sponsored CFDA Awards last night wore daring, dazzling looks with no worries of playing it safe for the mass media, since this 7th Avenue version of the Oscars is a little more sheltered than the Hollywood event. That’s not to say the women and men here weren’t elegantly dressed: fabulous gowns and tuxes abounded, but look closely and you’ll see towering shoes, short hemlines and plunging necklines that really pushed the envelope in terms of what works for the red carpet.
Sarah Jessica Parker created the biggest stir of the night in a gorgeous, art nouveau-style Alexander McQueen gown. She presented a Board of Directors Special Tribute Award to the late designer at the ceremony.
