Bright Colors, Bushwick, April 2021
Bright colors are popping up not just on tulips but on people on the streets of NYC – a trend we also saw in some of the bright, monochromatic menswear looks at last night’s Oscars. It seems to signal unbridled optimism after a long, cold winter.
Bright Idea: Anne V., West Village, February 2021
It was great to see model Anne V. just strolling through the neighborhood yesterday. Even better, she is wearing one of my favorite trends of this winter: bright puffers! If you’re going to be stuck wearing a puffer coat for this seemingly endless cold weather, you might as well make it something cheerful and colorful. This one is Balenciaga, which arguably spearheaded the trend, but there are plenty of colorful thrifted or vintage puffer coats to be had as well. Thanks for stopping, Anne V.
Kristen Bateman at Rebecca Minkoff FW2021
I have been drawn to fashion writer Kristen Bateman’s cheerful Instagram feed during this pandemic – always full of her signature bright colors and cool beauty tricks. Her crossbody bag – which is not a cat, in case you were wondering – is also quite timely.
Signs of Spring: Martha Hunt at Jason Wu FW2021
A great look on Martha Hunt at the Jason Wu show with some trends we expect to continue. Like everything else in the theoretical post-pandemic world, don’t expect clothes to get back to “normal” right away. We may eventually put away our sweatpants and opt for slightly more tailoring, but things will likely stay long and loose, like these pants on model Martha Hunt or the skirts Wu showed on the runway. Freedom of movement is key.
Ti Amo, Milano
Fourteen days and what seems like a lifetime ago, Milan Fashion Week was the most enjoyable fashion week I attended this year. The weather was beautiful – sunny and 60 degrees – the clothes were cheerful pops of color, almost everyone was in a good mood, and the living was easy. It wasn’t until the last day that coronavirus started to affect the city. Milan, we are wishing you a return to la dolce vita very soon.
One important fashion takeaway from Milan fashion week: saturated color. This is one of the things Italy has always done best. Again we are seeing monochromatic dressing here, but revved up for spring. Think of it as superhero outfits, separates in the same bright color from head to toe, often a pantsuit. Interestingly, we did not see a lot of prints except as an accent, which is certainly a change from the wild mishmash of Prada and Gucci prints quite recently. And the pastels of yesteryear look washed out by comparison. (more…)
Bubble-Gum Pink: Tracee Ellis Ross at Prada Resort 2019
Tracee Ellis Ross wore bright bubble-gum pink to the Prada resort show – a fun burst of color on a warm night. It was great to see a celeb pairing a cocktail dress with sneakers, a trend we’ve seen on the kids of NYC that may be making its way to the red carpet.
Bright Idea: Shiona Turini at Ralph Lauren FW2018
Polina Askeri at Jil Sander FW2016
Brighten up a rainy day with graphic prints and bright colors as Polina Askeri did at the Jil Sander show in Milan.
Lorena Vergani at Schiaparelli FW2015
I guess it’s the prep in me, but I’m always a sucker for bright colored pants in the summer, like these bright pink ones seen on Lorena Vergani at the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris.
Printed Polo, Outside DKNY
Sometimes a snazzy shirt is all you need. This guy is one of many to mix daywear with neon bright sneakers – a high-low combination that works especially well if you add luxe accessories like a leather zip bag.
JJ Martin at Balmain
This is how to wear brights right now: by pairing them with neutrals, as J.J. Martin did at the Balmain show in Paris. Martin has really mastered the ladylike look, bringing adult polish to trends and making them her own. To wit: the discreet black shoes and bag that finish off the outfit, after the jump. (more…)
Susie Lau at Ann Demeulemeester
Style Bubble’s Susie Lau wore her trademark cheerful bright colors to the Ann Demeulemeester show. Her outfits were a breath of fresh air during the gloomy, overcast days of Paris fashion week.
Spring: you can will it to be here with your clothing! I think it’s one’s civic duty to dress colorfully in urban areas during this time of year, since we don’t have as many flowers. People have to be the flowers.
Michelle Elie at Roberto Cavalli
Michelle Elie of Garage Magazine was a bright pop of orange and red color on a gloomy day outside the Roberto Cavalli show. Close-up of her Miu Miu platforms, after the jump.
Black and Yellow, Outside Victoria Beckham
Nothing brightens up a sea of blah black coats in January like a pop of neon color. This guest at the Victoria Beckham show accented her thick black coat with a sunny yellow hoodie and mirrored sunglasses, bringing a little Cali surf style to bear on a NY winter day.
