NYFW SS2021: Safety First, But Make It Fashion
Due to the pandemic, New York Fashion Week was an extremely scaled down affair this season, with only one or two live shows or presentations per day when there would normally be upwards of 10. It certainly felt like another loss in a year full of losses. But the few guests who did attend soldiered on in style.
Most of the fashion crowd has adapted to the new normal by embracing masks, treating them as a key element of an outfit by mixing and matching prints and colors. Some masks were distinct political statements, like Jason Wu’s, emblazoned with the words “Distance Yourself From Hate.” Some were more whimsical, like the Alice + Olivia masks printed with 1960s ladies. Also on the scene was a mirrored face mask and even a “Covidisor” plastic helmet. Over the top, perhaps, but that’s fashion for ya.

Best of NYFW (This Time Last Year)
It’s that time again: New York Fashion Week is upon us. It brings the semiannual dilemma: what are we going to wear?! Here are some of the best looks from New York Fashion Week this time last year – looks that have stood the test of time and would still work well today, no matter what the weather. They represent people in many walks of the fashion world from models, influencers, aspiring influencers, society ladies, editors, and buyers. Whether you’re dressing to look all-business or just to have fun and get from place to place, here are a few ideas.

Black and White Stripes, Dumbo 2018
Back after a long absence. I have been photographing in the streets of NYC these past few months, but have been particularly unnerved by the abuse of users’ personal information by Facebook – and by affiliation Instagram – so I haven’t been posting much. It’s quite a conundrum for photographers, since many of us have become dependent on these platforms to publicize our work.
At any rate, here’s a cute look from the streets of Dumbo in December, which I don’t think will be of any use to foreign agents or political consultants. This was for a print trade publication Footwear Plus that goes out to shoe designers everywhere. This month’s street style story was on the boots New Yorkers are wearing.
Haute Coat: Lauren Levison at Givenchy Couture FW2018
A good investment bet for fall? The beautifully tailored coat, like this one on Lauren Levison at Givenchy couture.

Long Story: Emily Mortimer at Chanel’s Tribeca Film Festival Dinner 2018
Emily Mortimer wore Chanel’s classic monochrome black and white to the Tribeca Film Festival dinner, including a floor-length pleated maxi skirt. We really did not see many midi-length skirts at this fashion event despite their popularity in previous seasons. It was either mini or maxi and hardly anything in between.

Kozue Akimoto at Comme des Garçons FW2018
The beautiful Kozue in Comme des Garçons in Paris. And yes, she could walk quite gracefully in these shoes. Impressive!
Film Buff: Karlie Kloss at Diane von Furstenberg SS2018
Karlie Kloss is apparently a film buff – who knew? We are always discovering surprising things about fashion people we’ve been shooting for years. The supermodel is hosting “Movie Night With Karlie” on Freeform this winter with guests like Kendall Jenner and Jourdan Dunn. Because if you’re going to curl up for a movie, wouldn’t you rather curl up with Karlie?!
White Jumpsuit, Outside Cushnie et Ochs SS2017
The welcome trend of wide-legged pants, which are so cool and breezy on hot summer days, does not seem to be going anywhere soon. A white silk jumpsuit with black accessories looks chic for the last days of summer.
Headscarf, Sweatshirt and Long Skirt, NYFW SS2017
Streetwear is making major inroads into high fashion – but within this development lies a major possibility for error. Unless you’re still actually in gym class, you probably don’t want to go for a head-to-toe streetwear look. Here is one way to wear the chunky, oversize sweatshirts that are already appearing in stores for fall. A guest at NY Fashion Week mixed hers with a long tiered skirt, heels, patent leather bag and a headscarf for a perfectly polished outfit that was also on trend.
Amanda Wellsh at Marchesa Bridal FW2017
Spotted outside the Marchesa bridal show: model Amanda Wellsh in black leather pants. It’s not time to put these away quite yet: they work well on a cool or rainy spring day, especially when you show a little ankle.
