Bill Cunningham 1929 – 2016
I was shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Bill Cunningham this Saturday. He was 87, but somehow he seemed immortal to me, or at least indefatigable. Anyone who shoots street style owes him the world. There was “street” photography before Bill Cunningham, but not the sort that focused solely on fashion until he started publishing his photos in the Times.
People often ask me if I “knew” him, and the answer, as it is for most people in fashion, is both yes and no. (more…)

Bill Cunningham New York
If you see no other movie this spring, make sure you see this entertaining, funny and touching documentary on New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham, playing in many cities across the U.S. Without Mr. Cunningham, street style blogs like this one would not exist. And yes, kids, he was around long before the Sartorialist!
The film chronicles the master of the street style photography from his early career as a milliner through his years starting out in photography in the ’60s to the present day. His nomadic, ascetic daily existence consists of riding his bike to fashion shows and glamorous charity benefits, photographing gorgeous and expensive clothing, then going home to a teeny apartment above Carnegie Hall furnished with filing cabinets and a single cot. He has since moved to a more spacious apartment, and he’s on his 29th bike (the first 28 were stolen), but little else has changed in a life spent pursuing beauty though photography, for which he eventually won a Legion of Honour award in France.
True confession: I make an unintentional cameo in the film! It involves Anna Wintour and the Oscar de la Renta show. I took this photo of Cunningham at top at that same show. It has always been an honor to photograph alongside a true artist and a gentleman.

Diane von Furstenberg SS 2011
The weather turned distinctly autumnal on the Sunday of New York Fashion Week, as rain came down on Lincoln Center Plaza before the Diane von Furstenberg show. Umbrellas and trench coats were put to good use.
Kate Lanphear. I know you’ve seen this outfit in the previous post, but I liked this portrait of her. While most of us just “dare to be different” some of the time, she has a distinct sense of style rooted in Goth otherness – this one combines a vintage rocker tee with a sleeveless trench. It reaffirms the importance of experimentation in fashion, instead of just following what everyone else is doing. (more…)

Rodarte
It’s called Rodar-TAY, darling. A select few braved the frosty atmosphere for the Rodarte show and arrived wearing some lovely, warm clothes for the occasion.
Sometimes, all it takes is a coat in just the right color, like the peachy nude of this overcoat, paired here with a fur hat and beige scarf. (more…)
Oscar de la Renta Show SS10
The Oscar de la Renta show always sets the standard for uptown chic, and this season was no exception. The only thing lacking was the socialite contingent, which seemed diminished this time around. Let’s hope the uptown girls follow Anna Wintour’s Fashion’s Night Out initiative and accept that there is no shame in shopping – especially if you’re supporting another critically acclaimed de la Renta collection.
This red dress and classic black heels was the most striking outfit coming in the door. It turned out to be especially appropriate given Oscar de la Renta’s spring line, which featured bright Latin colors. (more…)
Marc Jacobs Show SS10
Marc Jacobs may have scaled down the number of celebrities at his shows, but the Marc Jacobs show is always the real “Fashion’s Night Out.” Everyone in the industry puts on their most glamorous evening wear for a fab night on the town, starting with the show and ending with Lady Gaga’s performance at the after party.
Lady Gaga wore a reliably kooky get-up to the MJ show: flat black hat tied on at a rakish angle, Marc Jacobs dress, white blazer, and a studded mask. (Bunny ears are to Madonna as studded mask is to Lady Gaga?) Unlike many newly-minted pop stars, however, she has always been obsessed with fashion: Check out this WWD article on her as an indie rocker with style, before she hit the music stratosphere.
Her date is Marc Jacobs’ partner Lorenzo Matone, who also looked quite dashing.

Diane von Furstenberg Show SS10 – Front Row!
We got a special look at the Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010 front row, which was packed not just with the usual fashion crowd but with DVF pals and luminaries like Graydon Carter, propietor of the crazy-hot Monkey Bar and the Waverly Inn. When Carter and his friend Fran Lebowitz were asked if they could be photographed together, Lebowitz quipped, “Oh good. I’ll look young.”
They both have great taste in blazers.

The Jill Stuart show took place at the main branch of the New York Public Library, where the attendees’ spring clothes looked particularly fanciful against the austere, classical backdrop – a fitting send-up for the times.
This brightly-colored dandified look has got legs.
Edwardian gray, an important trend for spring, as reported in Bill Cunningham’s “Gray Days.”
In case you were wondering, no, it was not difficult to distinguish the fashion people from the usual throngs of tourists at the NYPL.

This bag is amazing. Who’s the designer? Look for more graphic black-and-white or graffiti’d bags in 2009.
A structured, architectural coat makes a statement.
The tie-and-vest look, this time played down with a more casual jacket.
These funky, translucent-framed glasses play off an otherwise conservative look.
A good example of the ’80s jackets we’ll see in the fall: bright color, strong (but not over-the-top) shoulders, and a clean, sharp fit.

Fashion Week SS08: Oscar de la Renta
Perhaps no other designer works with his customer in mind as much as Oscar de la Renta – not an abstract idea of “the customer,” but the actual women who wear his clothes. Every season a loyal coterie of socialites attends de la Renta’s show – and this year, a new Hollywood contingent including Victoria Beckham.
There was no one defining silhouette in this collection, though with the exception of a couple of trapeze dresses, the focus was again on the waist. Moroccan-inspired prints inlaid with sequins and botanical patterns sparkling with hundreds of tiny mirrors were the most exciting developments. These looked particularly beautiful in motion.
