ADAM Show SS10
On a drizzly Saturday, many in the fashion pack let down their hair a bit and arrived at the ADAM show in their casual best. Leggings and skinny pants paired with oversize tops were a staple of Adam Lippes’ upscale sportswear for fall 2009, and many guests followed suit.
A great weekend outfit of a blue button-down boyfriend shirt with leggings, lace-up boots, and vest. Notice how handbag shapes are more structured, less slouchy for fall 2009. The ideal design has short handles and a long strap for versatility – and style. (more…)

Street Chic and Red Carpet: The September Issue Premiere
After her former assistant wrote the bestselling tell-all novel The Devil Wears Prada, which went on to become a hit film, you’d think the last thing Anna Wintour would invite into her office would be more prying eyes. Yet here we are, several years later, witnessing the reigning queen of fashion expose the formerly-clandestine inner workings of Vogue. It goes to show you that the only constant in fashion is change. RJ Cutler’s documentary on the fashion mag, The September Issue, is already getting lots of good buzz from those who’ve seen the advance release, which is not surprising given the tantalizing trailer. Wintour gamely decided to make a party of it with a screening at MoMA followed by a dinner hosted by Oscar de la Renta. She arrived with Sienna Miller, seen here in blue Thakoon. And on Anna Wintour?

The September Issue: The Trailer!
The trailer for the Anna Wintour/Vogue documentary, The September Issue, is finally out, and it looks especially titillating. NY Mag calls it “the real Devil Wears Prada” and notes that “everyone around her seems terrified of her.”
God forbid anyone should record what most fashion editors say, because it’s never enough to just say something isn’t good enough, you have to explain why. (more…)

Street Chic (and Red Carpet): 2009 CFDA Awards
When the fashion world brings a Hollywood date to an awards ceremony, the glamour quotient is extreme. This was black tie dressing at its best and most tricky, since the skies alternately threatened rain or just plain mugginess. But both the male and female guests pulled it off with aplomb, playing with hemlines (of both trousers and dresses) and reinterpreting what “black tie” means for 2009.
The “muse” theme of this year’s CFDA Awards (Council of Fashion Designers of America) encouraged designers to bring someone who inspires them as a date. You could almost imagine them designing clothes with a specific beautiful woman in mind.
It also meant that the women were accompanied by designers for this fashion event, not their husbands/significant others, who stayed at home. Everybody wins! (more…)

She Said, She Said: Post-Game Hissy Fit Analysis, Met Costume Institute Ball
I would say that fashion is like high school, but that wouldn’t be fair: actually, it’s more like junior high. The amount of sniping that went on before this year’s Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Ball – first with the bashing of Vogue and Anna Wintour’s involvement in the ball by author Michael Gross in the Post, then the hissy fit thrown by designer Azzedine Alaia, who felt snubbed by the museum – is unprecedented. But as models like Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour dropped out of the “Model As Muse” event in support of Alaia, the show went on without them and seemed just as fun, just like that 7th grade mixer you refused to attend for a very important reason.
If the brouhaha surrounding this year’s event illuminates anything, it’s the clash between old and new definitions of “culture.” Surely the museum’s curators had no idea they were causing such grave offense by neglecting Alaia, who they thought would refuse to participate in a group show; after all, curators are intellectuals who’ve never had to do the seating chart for a fashion show. For the ’80s, the museum went in the direction of mass, choosing names that the average museum-goer would recognize from a sunglasses shop, like Versace and Armani. What’s interesting is that it was the fashion world that objected, expecting the museum to take the High Art road. Per celebrity ringmaster Marc Jacobs in the Times:
He’s very upset. Azzedine is a great friend of mine. I admire him so much… He’s had a huge influence on the way women are shaped, the way women look. I do think he’s one of the greatest influences. I’m really sad that he’s not part of this exhibition.
Well, fashion world: what ye sow, ye shall reap.
But now onto what’s really important – what people wore!!!! OMG.

Marc Jacobs FS09
Nowhere was the radical change in NY Fashion Week more apparent than at the Marc Jacobs show. Where last season Posh and JLo walked the red carpet hand in hand amid a crush of paparazzi, now there were just gates, strict warnings about invitations, a small group of editors and buyers going in, and one very disappointed paparazzo standing next to me. But the end result isn’t that different from a (not much) earlier time before celebrities discovered fashion week, when it was actually all about the clothes.

Anna Wintour arrived 25 minutes ahead of time, though she is even harder to photograph now that she comes with two very large bodyguards blocking the way. A result of the fact that 60 Minutes may be doing a story on her? P.S. This may be the only time that you’ll ever see Anna Wintour and Ray’s Pizza in the same frame.
Carine Roitfeld. She wore this coat several times during fashion weeks here and in Europe. It’s a myth that the fashionably dressed “never wear the same outfit twice.” In fact, it seems that when they’re really in love with a piece, they’ll wear it over and over. Certainly a more sensible (and economical) approach.
Cropped trousers like these will soon be everywhere for spring.
Brightly striped cardigan.
This mix of lurid colors looked quite jarring as this woman was going into the Marc Jacobs show; after it was over, however, it seemed prescient. Marc Jacobs showed a lot of loud ’80s colors that injected a note of optimism for fall – photo below from Style.com.
Love the slash of bright red lips against the neutral gray of her trench.
A quirky haircut and funky blazer.
The fur flies as this woman runs to get to the show in time. Ever since the complaints about his show starting hours late a couple years back, Jacobs has been almost sadistically punctual.
An excellent menswear look.
More menswear style, this time on Roberta Myers, editor in chief of Elle.
Joe Zee in a Barbour jacket.
Her rolled up shorts fall into that “boyfriend”-anything trend. Also watch for camouflage and any army-navy-store type clothing – very recession-friendly.
A fellow photographer who looked to be a model-turned-photographer – very pretty and chic.
Love, love the dilapidated chic of this outfit. The scuffed loafers and Burberry trench look like relics of wealthier times.
It’s true – bowl cuts are appearing on women. It doesn’t seem like such a bad thing to try right now, but if you wait 30 seconds, it may get annoying.
Chanel bags are another totem of dilapidated chic. Since they’re classic, you could have bought it years ago, or even got it from Mummy. Either way, it looks right.
A great mix of high-low with the fur jacket and jeans, plus the sparkly headband.

Fashion Week SS09: Oscar de la Renta
A designer who dresses everyone from first ladies to megawatt stars, Oscar de la Renta draws a who’s-who list from fashion, New York society, and Hollywood to his shows on Park Avenue. The expensive suit that landed Cindy McCain in so much hot water with the press was Oscar de la Renta.

Here’s what black lipstick looks like off the runway–rather odd. If you took off the headscarf, this might be a good look. The gray dress on her friend is quite chic.

Fashion Week FS08: Halston
A supercool crowd showed up for the relaunch of Halston. Not sure yet about the collection – very drapey. Some of the drapey pieces could become iconic Halston items, but other day wear outfits… It’s alarming when pants make even the models look fat.
Fortunately, the people-watching alone was worth the trip.
Anna Wintour arrives.
Severe military chic – a Karl Lagerfeld level of cool.

A model promoting Members Only jackets. The bomber styles are the best sellers, but I like her fitted Balenciaga-esque one.
A good hi-lo mix of Brit wear and Converse sneakers.

Fashion Week SS08: Anne Klein
And on the seventh day, the fashion world wore jeans.
It’s a testament to Isabel Toledo’s talent that so many heavy hitters came to the Anne Klein show on the last morning of a particularly grueling fashion week. The artsy Toledo lent a dose of chic and a bit of folly to the traditionally straight-laced brand, where she is entering her second season, without straying too far from its core audience. Suits had an industrial edge. Taking a cue from her husband Ruben, she painted washed silk dresses with colorful flowers. Truly original.

Fashion Week SS08: Marc Jacobs
Bad news: The Marc Jacobs show was going to be delayed by two hours, late by even Marc Jacobs standards. Publicity agents circulated through the hipper-than-thou crowd, suggesting that everyone go get something to eat, get some dinner or something. No one moved.
“There’s a bar across the street?” a waiting editor said.
Mass exodus.
The show pinpointed what the crowd outside already knew: There’s no one way to corner the market on cool. Breaking with other designers, Marc Jacobs showed a number of silk shift dresses in a cinched-waist season that was already starting to feel a bit constricted. Taking up the challenge to do “sexy,” he interpreted it in the French vein: déshabillé, with sheer panels of fabric and visible undergarments. The unexpected clothes and the expansive pageantry of the show were like a long, cool glass of water after a frustrating wait.

Fashion Week SS08: Michael Kors
If so many spring collections have been “Deauville,” Michael Kors’ could be called The Swimmer, after the 1968 film starring Burt Lancaster. Preppy fashions abounded, from women’s Lilly Pulitzer-esque pink and green prints to men’s Bermuda shorts in outrageous (by preppy standards) brushed gold khaki. It was a fun collection in the classic American style.
The show was immensely popular and packed to capacity, so much so that late arrivals were turned away. Below, the guests.

According to today’s Page Six, Anna Wintour hates the word “blog” so much that she wants her staff to come up with a different word for it when Vogue starts its own, er, blog. Apparently, she finds the word “blog” “garish-sounding.”
What is garish? Well, it’s certainly not this look from March ’07 Vogue. No. This look is called “eccentric.”
I think I speak for all bloggers when I say: Step off, Anna. You may know your Alaia from your Theyskens, but you are way off base on this one. Look at these dozens of fashionable bloggers gathered in Austin for SXSW, example A. Blogs, blogging, and bloggers are so kewl.
Might I also point out that various other fashion publications have embraced the spring trend of “geek chic,” inspired by Marc Jacobs and Velma.

If I, example B, represent example A, the whole of blogs and bloggers, then bloggers are geeks -> geeks are chic -> “blogs” are not “garish.” “Eccentric,” maybe, but not garish.
